4:43 I am with you 101% on the music definition/genre of The Illusion. I do have that album too Don. From what I remember. It does not have any psych going on. Ah yes. The one and only Iron Butterfly. I remember hearing friends put on that whole side at various house and yard parties. I finally got a chance to see them live at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Show in 1988 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Bands like The Rascals, Bee Gees, ELP, Roberta Flack, Vanilla Fudge, Foreigner, Wilson Pickett, Genesis, The Spinners, Yes, The Coasters, The Blues Brothers, CSN, Led Zeppelin, etc... It was a an all day into the night show. From 10:30 am to 2:00 am the next day. A fun show. Another cool update D~ Rob/Boston

Aloha, That Old Goat's Vinyl , Wow! Iron Butterfly 🦋 mofi beat out Reel to Reel amazing, & is that the New mofi which is made from files ? That The Illusion record album interesting, smart move changing turntable to play older worked Records, I my self have a Fluance turntable with a Ortofon Blue which is great but very unforgiving, so I'll play my older well played record albums on my Crosley all in one player which comes with cassette player/recorder, CD Recorder/player, I can even record record albums to CD on this Crosley, lol... Anyway it plays the older Records better & more forgiveness in sound clicks & pops, Once I played a record that was still wet & no noises, I guess the lubricant of the water made it so I couldn't hear the surface noises lol.. Thanks again Don for another awesome video. Lookin forward to watching your next one..Mahalo Ed

All I know it was the second time they pressed it and I got it about a year ago and it sold out fast. A Fluance turntable with a Ortofon Blue is on my want list! When I got the Ortofon red I was amazed at the sound improvement and unfortunately the pop and click amplification as well. I have an ION & Audio-Technica turntable I've used on my computer to rip LP's a few times. There is a video on you tube about wetting a record when you rip it to mp3's to remove excess sounds. Thanks for watching Ed.

Hi Don, I found that “Illusion,” album thrifting one day. Unfortunately I left it behind bc of condition. I did give it a listen though a few months back and it’s not bad. I purchased my first black light poster, so now I need to grab a light! lol I will dive into shining the light on the black vinyl, to see if any glows. 👍🏻 Have a great day my friend!

Cool about getting blacklight stuff hopefully you and comment on records the glow too.👍

Hey hey hey what a day!!! Well that was fun, did not know about The Illusion, I like them!! Am curious, how much does a great cartridge need to cost not to endure Pops & Clicks? I have a few portables, only use on the go… I am thinking of investing on a nice one… Am curious to see your Reel to Reel machine… I am always looking for 7 inch OG recordings but hard to find. I have the Green Sports Sony Walkman, love my vintage stuff 🎶✌🏼😎

Pops and clicks are bad and I don't think there is a stylus built to withstand them. Elliptical is supposed to be better for sound and Spherical (cheaper price) to withstand pops. The walkman is now mine as a gift so woo hooo.🍻

I too thought the tape would be victorious. Im going to try to find a mofi copy for myself. Btw dinner looks fantastic.

I paid $70 ,I think, and that's about what they still go for. I HATE to cook but I gotta eat😂

I’ve yet to own a MO FI lp. If I did get one I’d certainly grab Iron Butterfly! It may sound alittle Strange but I never get tired of their long version of the hit! Dig the comparison segments! 🖖🚀
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
The Iron Butterfly mofi is a great listen and I'm sure you would like it, I just don't like mofi prices. There is a short version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida? 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂Not in my house😆.

the Illusion! A Long Island band who I think can be described more as a blue eyed soul rock band. I first heard the LP version of "Did You See Here Eyes" early one morning on WNEW-FM as I drove to the records tore in 1989-90. I bought the 45 through an ad in Goldmine and was disappointed it didn't have the drum solo. A penpal I had at the time found a copy of the LP and sent it to me. I had another of their LPs but i may have sold it or it is still downstairs in my record show stuff.

Rockpopbubblegumpsychblueeyedsoul 🤣. Great to hear from you JT. The Illusion might not be the best band in the world but I like them, it's a keeper😆

I remember an old Cheech and Chong bit, where a guy correctly identified the three most played songs in the English language as Happy Birthday To You, Auld Lang Syne, and In a gadda da vida! 😂Love the Walkman. Take Care.

I thought the reel-to-reel would win for sure. Regardless of sound, the reel-to-reel is the coolest one to have. The way you use the Crosley makes sense to me - constantly getting up to change the record is the biggest drawback to 45s. Cool walkman - I think I still have one around here somewhere. Rock on Don!

I thought the reel-to-reel would win for sure too! I don't get out my 45's often but when they come out so does the Crosley.🍻

Digital MOFI sounds better than Reel-To-Reel?? Craziness! 😂 Did they turn up the volume, or up the treble or bass? High quality vinyl! Interesting! It’s a rainy here! I’m hoping to clean some records that I bought, and also hook up the McIntosh and vintage Sansui speakers. I just got another cleaning down on it. I guess it was sitting too long. The owner of the shop said I need to flick the switches and turn the knobs at least once a month.
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
I was sooo surprised with the outcome of that comparison! I don't know how they did it but it just had a better sound. It looks rainy here but it's just the temperature dropping with a cold front moving in for a while. Sitting to long does make since just like our body's use it or loose it. Do you ever spray it with compressed air? I heard it's good for stuff like that but never tried it.
@mlblue53553 ай бұрын
@@thatoldgoatsvinyl No, I haven’t used that compressed air. I should. With the Mac, I let it warm up 10 minutes before playing. But the left channel wasn’t turning on right away. I would have to turn the volume up, then it came on and worked. That amp is from 1963. I rotate my different amplifiers and receivers, but not enough.

I walked into a bar (not a joke) sporting my sony walkman and man the response I got especially from the girl serving was mind blowing to them. Hard to believe the Mo Fi beat out the reel. Great show.
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
My granddaughter told me to keep the walkman so it will get used a lot. Yes mofi over tape was a shocker.

Walk Walkman WALK! 😊 I used to have one a Sony no less. Gone baby gone. Not surprised about the mofi but the tape is a keeper

Well the cassette player is now officially mine! It sounds great so I'm pretty happy about that. Yes the Reel to Reel is absolutely a keeper🍻

Mofi beat out reel to reel. I can believe that. Sounds like I need a black light again. I was just playing some cassettes Friday after work. I take out my boom box, grab an extension cord, lawn chair, and a beer. Won’t have too many days left I can do that. Cheers Don!

I need to get more mofi's to test, even with all the hubbub about mofi there is a great sound there. Supposed to get in the 30's here this week, this old goat will be staying in🍻

The MoFi sounds better than the reel-to-reel? Holy Macaroni! That blew my mind. But the reel-to-reel sounded better than anything else. That's a relief. Lol So are you Butterflied out for a bit? There's gotta be something to what you say about glow in blacklight records.
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
I was most definitely thought the reel to reel would be best, I was shocked. Yeah I can go a while now without hearing that LP again...well a few months anyway.
@vinylrichie0073 ай бұрын
I’m happy with the 6 or so MoFi records that I have.
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
I might get more after the reel to reel got beat out by the mofi. At least one, for another comparison.

I really want to buy some MO FI vinyl but man are they expensive... about 80-100$ Canadian each depending on what one. The first one ill get will be Dire Straits - Love over Gold, then ill slowly add on. But I'll definitely have to collect them over time because records get expensive. I just started collecting last month and already have over 70 so far. Ive probably spend at least 3500$ for just those 70 records plus all the hi-fi gear. Seriously adds up. Getting into it and buying a good turntable upfront, phono preamp, amp, speakers... you're talking a few thousand minimum for just the equipment to play your vinyl. Its certainly not cheap to get into unless you buy cheap cheap equipment.. I wanted good stuff upfront too so I don't feel the urge to upgrade them too quickly and can be content with the good equipment for a while. Thats my mindset. I bought a Technics SL1200 Mk5, Darlington Labs MP7B phono preamp, Technics Sa-C600 amp/cd/streamer and wharfedale speakers. Banks broken but at least I won't need to upgrade any gear for quite a while asides from constantly buying vinyl 😅
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
YES MOFI is priced very high!!! I would have more if they lowered their prices. I have 2 Dire Straits MOFI's they were a gift. I have a very low income so I thrift shop as much as possible but the two best upgrades I've done is my cartridge and speakers, that alone made the music stand out. Sounds like you are going to do some serious music listening🍻
@jdsofar3 ай бұрын
Never get the cheapest copy, unless it VG+. Always try to buy VG+. Anything below is usually bad quality especially if it's over 25 years old. Maybe if you have a. really good record cleaner VG could be acceptable but other than that I personally steer away and would rather spend a few more bucks for a VG+ copy.
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
The record wasn't graded and pictures looked OK but you can't see pops and clicks in a photo😂 I use 3 methods of cleaning, hand brush- Vinyl Styl- and ultrasonic.

Crabby Appleton too average, Juicy lucy is crap compared to their Misunderstood stuff, Every surf lp sounds the same dated. Preferred Sabbath to deep purple. English Illusion are better than their American counterparts. Iron butterfly becomes boring after a few plays. I blame the Simpsons
@thatoldgoatsvinyl3 ай бұрын
Well to each their own, I like everything in my collection or it wouldn't be there. Yes lots of Surf does have familiarities but if you sit and concentrate you can hear the subtle differences. I too prefer Sabbath over Purple but like them both. I don't watch The Simpsons.
