My parents asked me what I would like for my birthday in 1960. I asked for us to go to our local drive-in theater which was running a science fiction triple feature. "War of the Worlds", "This Island Earth", and "Forbidden Planet". Even though my dad and I were the only ones who stayed awake through all three movies (mom and my three brothers were sound asleep) it is still to this day one of my best family memories. Drive-in theater pizza, popcorn, and cupcakes we brought. Making use of the drive-in theater playground. Heaven.

Sorry to hear that. Here's a couple recommendations for you. Check out "The Boys in the Boat" included w/ Prime. It released in theaters early 2024. Great sports movie about an Olympic rowing team. Also, for an intense one... check out "Chopper" also included w/ Prime right now. It's one of Eric Bana's first movies and it's easily one of his best roles of all time, Amazing! It's pretty brutal at times but it's directed by Andrew Dominik who also did "The Assassination of Jesse James" and "Killing Them Softly" so it's a little odd but I love it. For new releases I loved "The Fall Guy" which you can rent at home. I also enjoyed "Monkey Man" which is a Indian John Wick style action movie. It's also for rent or included with Peacock. Hopefully one of those helps you feel a bit better.

If you've not seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, PLEASE DO SO NOW. He's right that it's far superior to most modern sci-fi films, at least in terms of writing, acting and directing. The effects also hold up brilliantly. I remember the thrill of watching it in the theater in the fall of '77. For those of us who were there, the one-two punch of Star Wars that summer and CE3K in the fall was the ultimate childhood experience! (For me, anyway...) For those about to watch it for the first time (hopefully in a darkened room, on a big-screen TV, with theater-quality sound), I envy you...

Interstellar is hands down the #1 greatest science fiction movie ever made in my opinion... Personally, it is my favorite movie of all time. I feel like it was specifically made to scratch my movie itch. Every aspect of it is flawless. From the concept, plot, script, story and cast to the sound, music, lighting special FX and overall cinematography to the directing and production etc... it gets a 10 in all categories from me. It is one of those rare sci-fi creations where the drama / acting arguably outshines the special FX. I always get stuck watching awful 'Lifetime' movies when hanging with my mother, but one day I basically confiscated the remote and forced her to watch this with me. She has trouble staying awake through anything. She will normally refuse to watch anything remotely weird, especially sci-fi... not to mention anything complicated or long. (If it wasn't for McConaughey and Hathaway casted, she definitely would have shut it down.) Needless to say she stayed awake the entire time and at the end she admitted that she was thoroughly entertained. And although she gets absolutely lost when it comes to physics, special relativity, etc... she was able to follow along and understand what was happening (with a little help from myself).

Spielberg is unequaled at transforming a fictional script into convincing and compelling reality. I frequently rewatch the airport control tower scene in Close Encounters and marvel at his orchestration. Mundane activities inside the tower suddenly giving way to escalating tension. The pilots struggling to describe what they're seeing. Tower technicians talking over each other to diagnose the situation. Their intermingled comments are unintelligible adding to the chaotic situation. The pilots opting not to declare a UFO sighting. "I wouldn't know what type of report to file." Absolutely masterful.

Freejack is my favorite movie on this list. It's only flaw was having Mick Jagger, who is NOT an actor and proves it, not that Emilio Estevez did much better honestly. It's one of the few movies I'd love to see remade, just because I like the story, but I think the movie could have been done better. That being said, I've rewatched it several times just because I enjoy it. Looking at Prime, I'd recommend some different movies: The Beastmaster (although I've always heard it called a sword and sandal movie, it's listed as science fiction for some reason), Virtuosity (Russell Crowe really gets into the part of the bad guy), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (the best version of all), Stay Tuned (one of the most underrated and forgotten movies ever, I love this movie), and MST3K: Cave Dwellers (I really enjoy MST3K, and this is one of my top 3 of all time).

No, Interstellar IS in fact one of Nolan's best movies, and one of the best science fictions movies of the last few decades. It is in fact my favorite Nolan film. I would also say that it should be clarified that the movie isn't "exhausting" in the sense that it's tedious. It may admittedly be emotionally exhausting for some because it does hit deep in the feels in some areas. It also may be mentally exhausting for some because it demands that viewers put down their cell phones and pay full attention, and further requires that they consider the weighty ramifications of the story and the scientific precepts behind it. In any case, it's a full fledged masterpiece that no sci-fi fan or space movie enthusiast should miss.

Great to see Nekrotronic make the list. Huge Ben O'Toole fan here. Wish he did more movies. Dude could pass for Tony Stark. Check out his movie Bloody Hell if you get a chance.

Prime lost my interest since they added adds. But this makes it interesting again. Thanks Darren !

All of these should have NO ADS but the new system isn't consistent or reliable in all locations so it's hard to guarantee that 100% but as far as I can tell these should be Ad free for Prime Members in the U.S. but the Top Pinned Comment always lists out other streaming services currently hosting these same movies.

When "Radius" was first released, audiences gave it a wide berth.

You're right about Close Encounter of the Third Kind. It still hold up with todays special effects. Outstanding choice for number 1.

Maximum Overdrive brings back a specific memory, and is one of my favorite movies! I remember watching with my mom and I screamed, “why doesn’t he get the F@CK out of the way!” I was probably 7 or 8. My mom stopped the movie, turned towards me and goes, “What did you just say?” I’ve never been so scared lol That was the first time I used a swear word in front of my mom and I’ll never forget it!

Close encounters of the 3rd kind stands up to today's movies, IMO. Yeah, it's old, but it's darn good.

Watched CE3K with 19-year old sci fi newbie daughter last weekend. Enjoyable. Good list except for Valerian. Thanks

Just watched 'Radius'. I dont know if it was the Jane and Liam chemistry but it was very good. Would love to see this remade with a larger budget and some script/plot refinement - but same main character actors.

Prime may have good things on there but the UI is set up to get you to rent/buy movies and tv shows or to subscribe to other services like HBO. Its all about getting you to spend money, not about finding good stuff to watch.
