Independent front suspension is what killed Real Four Wheel drive and Ford trucks. Straight axle was the best 4x4 . I did own an 83 F-100 3 on the tree. 300 six cylinder. 2 wheel peel I would love to have another..

I tend to think the 1973 - 1979 were the better trucks of that era. Dang sure was not the 1980 model year......the F-150; F-250; F-350...and even the Bronco all had "swiss cheese" frames. Virtually impossible to find ANY 1980 Ford model year trucks on the road.

That said...there are certain models and certain years of those models that all 3 manufacturer's have made that are both 'good' and 'bad' vehicles.

Fords engines are great, old fords can generally take a beating, but the drivetrains fricken suck, and new ones....my 06 has 145k on it, no rust, yet its always finding new ways to fall apart, my 97 with 250k still purs and takes whatever abuse i put it through, and if i smacked the same cement platform as hard in my 06 as i did in my 97, she wouldnt walk away, my 97 though, it just didnt care, and its that personality that makes the old fords worth it, I've tried to kill my 97 a few times, and shes still going strong, pretty sure she has more rust than paint at this point, in the end i traded the reliability of the 4.6 for the power of the 5.4, and im regretting it

Great granddad bought an 86 4x4 f150 xlt lariat new for 12 thousands. He gave it to me when i turned 16. I got it runnin and been driving it ever since. I got ran off the road and rolled it on 1 side like 6 years ago and its fine except cosmetic stuff. These trucks now probably wont last long enough to get handed down like that.

As we get new safety mandates we get new weight. Totally nullifies all the engineering toward fuel efficiency. You'll notice none of these come with effeminate looks or an air dam or anything, so really fuel economy has gotten worse.

ford "twin wear a tire beam" front suspension, they were a nighmare to keep aligned and were very hard on tires, whoever came up with these mpg numbers were smoking crack, our early 80's ford vans got 15 mpg on a good day

I've always liked GM better than Ford but Ford has made a ton of rough, tough remarkable commercials. Here's a Ford carrying a Chevy up this monster mountain of boulders while towing a Dodge.....and GMC pickup too! LOL. They just kept topping themselves. In the 60s and 70s they showed Ford trucks going airborne in huge jumps. They sucessfully instilled the message of being being Built Ford Tough. Thanks for sharing these vintage ads. Car manufacturers used to really put a lot of creative effort into marketing their products.

I had '88 and '91 ranger and '95 F150. they were great trucks! 👍
