Thank you for a wonderful and enjoyable selection. Overrated? No. While there are other musical geniuses who have produced wonderful masterpieces, I agree with the perfectionist conductor Karl Bohm who said translated from German that "Mozart is in a class by himself."

Simply superb? Is Mozart overrated? IMHO, absolutely NOT! During his sadly short life (35 years) his output was stupendous. Even his earliest works demonstrated great maturity and sophistication. However, everyone has their favorite composer.

This is an excellent compilation of some of the major works, the only problem, for me, being that the true soul of Mozart, and the essential measure of his genius and greatness, are to be found in the operas. Yes, there is Wagner and there is Verdi, but Mozart's sense of the dramatic stage and its possibilities for expressing the fundamentals of the human condition is unique: it is the equal of Shakespeare's, and in some moods it is possible to think it superior. I do not exaggerate, I think.

Johannes Brahms (1896): " I always find Beethoven's C Minor concerto {the Third Piano Concerto} much smaller and weaker than Mozart's. . . . I realize that Beethoven's new personality and his new vision, which people recognized in his works, made him the greater composer in their minds. But after fifty years, our views need more perspective. One must be able to distinguish between the charm that comes from newness and the value that is intrinsic to a work. I admit that Beethoven's concerto is more modern, but not more significant! I also realize that Beethoven's First Symphony made a strong impression on people. That's the nature of a new vision. But the last three Mozart symphonies are far more significant. . . . Yes, the Rasumovsky quartets, the later symphonies-these inhabit a significant new world, one already hinted at in his Second Symphony. But what is much weaker in Beethoven compared to Mozart, and especially compared to Sebastian Bach, is the use of dissonance. Dissonance, true dissonance as Mozart used it, is not to be found in Beethoven. Look at Idomeneo. Not only is it a marvel, but as Mozart was still quite young and brash when he wrote it, it was a completely new thing. What marvelous dissonance! What harmony! You couldn't commission great music from Beethoven since he created only lesser works on commission-his more conventional pieces, his variations and the like. When Haydn or Mozart wrote on commission, it was the same as their other works. "

hehe - i have thought Mozart is overrated for quite a long time - not to take anything away from his great genius but i blame the academic music world for putting him on the highest of pedestals - to me they have hyped up Mozart so much only so they can justify the extreme self importance they attach to their own musical teaching positions - yes, you can analyze Mozart up and down and find endless numbers of brilliant musical ideas and shades of emotions but really a fair and deep analysis of so many other great composers' works will yield an equally abundant harvest of brilliant musical manifestations - Mozart did not (and could not) own a special patent on a creative process that is by definition universal and accessible to everyone - the 'Mozart Mystique' was created to make long coat-tails for generations of teachers to ride on

I neither understand nor wish to entertain the proposition that Mozart is overrated. For me, the proposition is absurd if not just plain unintelligible, and I would decline to argue with anyone who advanced it on the grounds that such a person is all but insane!
