Here’s a storyline idea: bowser has gotten control of all/most of the power ups, and he has hidden them not just in mushroom kingdom, but all over earth! But Mario has severe injuries from trying to stop bowser, and Luigi is to scared! So only Toad and Toadette can stop bowser by collecting all the power ups and using them against bowser!

Jeff the mage tells the gang that Luigi may have been possessed again, and that they need to reunite to be able to save the world. They must conquer the long desert that they need to cross as skeletons try to dig their graves. Time is running out, will the world be saved?

Now I really wish there were message blocks for us to use. Dialog could've been revolutionary for story-telling. Currently, the only ways to add any lore is to either type the plot in the level description, or to vaguely add easter eggs that might make players think about what is the reason for all of this. The latter is very difficult to the point where it's not even liable for professional creators to use. We need message blocks.
