Large corporations do this all the time, they bring in skilled workers to develop the system and streamline it, usually hammer out the bugs and issues and as soon as they have an effective documentation for the process they remove all the well paid skilled workers and replace them with underskilled individuals and expect the same performance. Been at three Fortune 500 companies, they all do this.

I was a spec-4 (senior level) audio service tech for Sears from 1998 - 2002. They had opened a new regional service center and they relied heavily on the spec fours to figure out how to make the place work during the first two years. By the fourth year, they were inventing ways to run off all the spec 4's to save money. It wasn't long after this that they were bought by K-Mart, and then they both disappeared.

Gamers aren't embracing Windows 11, it comes by default with new devices. Every ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc. that gets bought is a new W11 user on Steam. It's more "popular" with gamers because we tend to get more recent hardware than average users.

just like with AMD GPU sales drop - it's very OEM based. recent hardware however does not equal windows 11, it just means that many people opt for prebuilt systems with an OS rather than building a system themselves and deciding which windows to use actually.

The narrative that somehow gamers are embracing Windows 11 but other non-gamers are replacing Windows 11 with 10 is pretty absurd. Even gamers are scared of changing operating systems. Non gamers definitely aren't doing that. A more likely explanation is that some recent large corporate purchases that insisted on Windows 10 are skewing the numbers.

It's probably a methodology problem. Statcounter uses search queries and they have a warning in their methodology page about how their tracker only sees click-throughs from search referrals into a site, and that AI chatbots may skew that because you're less likely to click through to the source when the chatbot tells you the answer. Educated guess? Win11 embedding chatbot search in more places is leading to Win11 users disproportionately using chatbot queries more than Win10 users... by maybe 1%? Keep in mind in the same source data Window 8 also goes up a little bit. It's not that Windows 8 is gaining users, is more likely that more Win11 users are not getting tracked by these guys' methodology.

Windows 11 works fine, but where it fails is in its high/onerous system requirements and requiring a Microsoft account to use it. Many, many people are not going to throw away a perfectly working PC from 2017 or earlier that can't run Windows 11 when Windows 10 works fine, and many people aren't comfortable using a Microsoft account yet. Microsoft's going to be in a bind next year if they don't ease on some of this stuff soon. And the crazy thing is that Windows 11 works FINE without TPM 2.0 and other things. It's an artificial limiter, and people HATE those.

I recently built a system with a Gigabyte B760i and dropped a 14700K on it. Before I did that, I updated the BIOS first. Then using the BIOS settings, set a power limit of 135W (125W is the chip's design limit) after much testing. Default settings were allowing the CPU to run around 230W! Being this was a small tower build, using a Deepcool AN600 low profile cooler, I went from seeing 100c under load at defaults to down to 70-75c over a 10 minute stretch of full load with the 135W cap. Please note, this all was changed within an hour of setting up the system. I cannot stress enough, if you build a new system with these newer chips, update the BIOS right away, and either enable the Intel baseline profile if it is there, or set a power limit. Protect your investment. Its not worth the marginal improvement to your performance to allow your chips to run double their power design limit.
@carlr2837
@carlr2837 23 күн бұрын
Like you, I have a 14700K I built last fall. First thing I ran on it was a stress test, and when the CPU hit 100C instantly, it was obviously unacceptable. I went to a better cooler using liquid metal, and cut the power limits to about what you cut to, as well and undervolted (0.195v) it and underclocked it (96%). I also installed a "bending correct frame" to hopefully prevent the chip from warping over time. So far, no problems, but that doesn't mean that I'm happy with Intel. All of this was extra expense and extra time, plus the chip runs a bit slower than expected. A CPU/motherboard combo should work safely out of the box with default settings. There is no excuse for anything less.

They just do not care about long-term anything. Make line go up!

I think maybe the reason gamers have got windows 11 is that 1: people who don’t really know computers/are older won’t understand upgrading and prob will ignore the prompts, and also don’t care about updates, whereas gamers are more tech savvy and will prob know how to do this and also why they need/should prob get security updates, and 2: new gamers will prob get windows 11 as it is more pushed by advertisers and so they prob will get 11 when they get a new PC.

These Intel CPUs going overboard with power was inevitable at some point to lead to failure. Makes the FX-9590 and FX-9570 from AMD that rated their CPUs more honestly back then at 220W seem downright reasonable by comparison when Intel's now pushing 300W+ at the socket to compete with AMD. The market can force Intel to make a correction by not buying any Intel CPU above a 220W PEAK rating.

So I think that the one who don't care about their data, are more likely to switch to Win11 and share with Valve their Data. Can you explain what's asus defaults settings for those cpus?? Becouse on asus motherboards default settings is forcing cpu to go beyond Intel limits. And sorry but asus had intel spec settings out from the box. Thers option multicore enhancement it was there from beginning and if you set it from auto to disabled enforce all defaults it's basically Intel spec for cpu. It means asus exactly know what are the basic settings for intel cpu from beginning.

It makes sense with the gamers charts that Windows 11 is more popular. Most modern PC gamers are usually pretty tech savy and like to stick on the bleeding edge, else they'd just stick with consoles. Even in linux, outside the prepackaged Steamdeck (and OS variants), it seems most Linux gamers end up running distros that are classified as bleeding edge or close to it. I'm personally using Windows 11 Pro on my gaming PC and really having noticed any issues outside the ones that I'd see in Windows 10 normally anyways (mainly explorer crashing/restarting if I have multiple windows open for like a week straight). This has been a known issue for a long time in general for all versions of windows as it relates to a low priority unfixed memory leak. The same thing happens in my older (pre TPM) laptop running Windows 10 home.

I’d have to disagree with you on that, i agree that most gamers are moderately tech savy but only the ones who built their themselves are savy enough to install an OS, those who buy pre-built desktops and Laptops are likely not savy enough to install a different OS. I think that a larger share of PC gamers belong to the group that aren’t savy enough to install an new OS and the rise in the share of windows 11 is merely because most new pre-builts are shipping out with windows 11, if you look more into many people even those who have a good enough PCs are refusing to “upgrade” to windows 11 as it just more wasteful of an OS than windows 10 which makes it worse for gaming

Windows 11 genuinely has good support for games and especially older ones. Plenty of old games I have that Windows 11 is super stable pop the disc in and go where Windows 10 had...issues. Also, being someone with HDR, Windows 11 treats HDR far better. For me, 11 has just been a better 10 all around, though I know that's not the case for everyone.

My reasons for beingbon win11: 1) they removed the possibility of making a win10 boot officially and I didn't feel like getting it from a random third party 2) they're actively making win10 a pain in the ass 3) I wish I could install win10, it's better and cleaner than win11. Screw win11 where I can't even edit my registry without needing tovwipe my drive and reinstall windows...

Pretty sure Tesla has commitments for expanding the supercharger network related to other automakers adopting the NACS standard - if that slips, I can well imagine the other automakers taking legal action against Tesla. Also, were I in charge of any competing charging company, I'd be trying to scoop as much of that team as possible. The operational knowledge has to be huge - and valuable. Because, as you say, all the other charging infrastructure is total crap.

The truth that everybody knew finally comes out. The only way Intel can compete with AMD is to put their CPU’s on the short route to death. I said over a year ago that these CPU’s wouldn’t stand the test”test of time”. I didn’t expect it to happen so fast……….but it did.

A lot of times when M$ and other companies say "security update", it's actually not really about security. I've seen some "security" updates being just functional updates to fix something that did not work properly, and then other times it's things you don't ask for/don't want. Either the devs are just lazy to document their fixes, or they don't want people to know the shady stuff they are try to force users to adopt. Labeling them "security update" is the easiest to scare people into update, even if the update isn't necessary at all.

For the record, my 13700k is unstable on my ASUS on their default OC profile. I've had to tweak it down manually for stability. I blame ASUS primarily, although we need to scrap entirely this notion that high end hardware is purchased pre-OC'd and the "official" settings to be unrealistically low. This one-two thing of being sold arbitrary performance based on how fast the motherboard guesses your CPU can run is an absurd abdication of responsibility, and all of this applies to RAM as well.

It almost feels like it's akin to the whole X3D debacle last year, where ASUS boards were overvolting them and destroying them while the company was avoiding responsibility despite them having the only BIOS that was nuking the chips.

Windows 11 CAN be a decent OS, you just have to tell Microshaft to go shaft themselves on the majority of changes nobody asked for and their associated creepitude. From entering a bullshit password to make the "log in options" button show up to use an "offline account" Which YES, still exists despite claims to the contrary even in the new release where outlets are saying it's gone. It's just been moved / reworded. Go in and make sure every bit of tracking is disabled, then use explorer patcher, 7 task tweaker, and open shell to tell every "taskbar modernization" of the past 15 years to go suck an egg. And that's still less work than trying to turn Linux into a viable desktop OS. Especially if like me 90%+ of what you do on your desktop has no *nix equivalents worthy of mention or just don't run right under Wine, or are hobbled by things like the mattress-stain font kerning of freetype, or the ridiculously useless audio latency.
