20 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Pastor

Being a pastor is hard. The church is often guilty of only painting a picture of the blessings of being called to ministry. We forget to talk about the struggle.
So here are some things I wish someone would have sat down and told 20-year-old me. I've spent the last decade learning these the hard way.

I have been running and hiding from a call to minister for a couple years now, just for these main reasons. Always have been thinking there is no way I'm getting up there. I got a confirmation a few months ago and started studying again when I came across this. The attacks my family and I have already received I take as the devil trying to scare me away again. NO MORE! I will persevere, and get this breakthrough on the other side.

God bless you Sir. 🙏🏻✝️. I just prayed for you by name. May the Holy Spirit remove your demons now in the name of Jesus Christ. Here are some thoughts that may or may not help: If the problem is others: Life is so hard that the only reasonable response is compassion. I dont always see that and respond that way, but I believe it and that helps. When people criticize me, it is so hard to see them as suffering, but they probably are if they are criticizing. And I remember in the past when I was suffering and critical of others: I tried so hard to seem totally together and strong and not let them see that I was suffering. But I was. If the problem is with yourself: Are you getting enough vitmain D? Our ancestors whether hunter/gatherer or farmer spent loads of time in the sun. Nearly everyone is low. The reference ranges used by doctors are too low. I know this from my work. I hope youre not taking statins. Magnesium helps most people too (one or two percent of people dont need any more magnesium at all but most do). Care to share more about whats up? If those comments dont help ignore them; Im sure my prayers will.

PTL for making it 20 years! This is my 20th year also. By the grace of God I have been bless that it's all in one church. I would add one thing...Church planting should be #2 on the list. Most difficult thing I have ever done and that's saying a lot. Joined the US Army out of High School and served 10 years. I got out and started a new telecom business and ran that for 13 years. I thought planting a church would be a piece of cake compared to what I had already been through. Oh how wrong I was... By the grace of God alone, I'm still serving as the Senior Pastor of the church we planted years ago. God is always good, faithful and His mercy endures forever.

I got called into ministry 10 years ago and I ran for my life, I saw what pastors go through in local churchs and I didn't want any of that. Last year God closed all the doors of employment, I couldn't earn a living and at a conference God called me again. This time without giving me a choice. I am still afraid and this seems like such a lonely road. Videos like this prepare people. Keep up the good work

Hi Jonathan, this is what I wish Someone told me before starting also: get rid of your doubts and know that the God that called us is faithful to sustain us before, during, and after trial periods. You will rise above pressure, negativity and darkness. Aspire to Become a man “of the Presence of God”, not just a preacher. You are not just called, you are equipped and anointed. The church is full and tired of dry bones, empty preachers that have no power, don’t become like them, seek a relationship in the depths of The Spirit of God. Seek wisdom everyday. God will open up the eyes of your understanding in ways you can’t even imagine or think possible. Don’t neglect the supernatural, be ON FIRE for God, administer money, time, and your other resources well. Seek to be a part of a network of powerful intercessors, and look for a good prophetic and apostolic ministry to be connected with even if there is a small (honor $) amount to pay every month, it will be worth it as the revelation and the anointing you will tap into will create a powerful atmosphere. My wife and I are going to plant a church next year, and it has been a process also, but let’s have faith in God and in the abilities He placed within us. We can do this through Him and for Him.

Has it gotten easier? No!!! But all the pastor's I have spoken to have told me that if it's easy then this is not for you. If it's hard then you know you are on the right track

I'm in the seminary pursuing an MDiv, but I am not following the "plant a church" paradigm. Instead, I have designating myself a "field pastor." As a field pastor, I do not pastor a church group specifically, work at, or even attend a church. Instead, I work independently with homeless drug addicts. When people tell me I'll never pastor a church, I laugh and tell them "the world is my church." I agree with the majority of your comments, particularly #3. Even pastors need pastors...if you ever want to talk, you have my name. Grace and peace...keep fighting the good fight!

Hlokomani Khondlo, it's been my personal observation that pastors' kids are often under special pressures and sometimes tend to rebel-especially against their father-and so I wonder if you could respond and give some advice to the CHILDREN of pastors for what they will face? Of course, some PKs grow up with a strong faith in the Lord and then live dedicated lives serving Christ as adults as well. What especially concerns me is the PKs who turn away from the faith, often as a way of rebelling against their family and their Christian upbringing. @@ChipsAplentyBand what a loaded question, thanks for taking the time to ask. I’m definitely not an expert but I will share what I’ve learned being a PK. Firstly you’ll feel some pressure to perform or serve, inside and outside the church. Outside the church you’ll always be labeled as the pastors kid and never yourself. Inside the church there will always be this spotlight on you, whether you like it or not. This may lead to problems with individual identity. Another thing I’ve noticed is the tendency for PKs to kind of lay back when it comes to their spiritual life. They think since daddy is a pastor and all, we’re sorted...neglecting the personal relationship to be formed with Christ (and therefore The Father). For me these are the main things. It’s very important to be able to step out of your fathers shadow, I’m still struggling with that. Yeah I hope these were helpful, sorry if the English is not perfect. English is not my 1st language

Please let me encourage you there. All of us, I think, step out of our father's shadow-and I'm not a PK myself-no later than when dad dies, but I do know of at least one pastor's kid who really didn't want much to do with his dad and kind of played along with church 'reluctantly' as a young man. His name is Paul and I still pray for him now, and for a sister and brother of his, since they (all) surely know the gospel from their family and church background but as bright and capable people like both of their parents, they prefer to not be 'told' what to believe, or think, or do. The problem that both parents/pastors face is that they are also teachers, and not just authority figures, for their kids, who sometimes fail to distinguish dad's or mom's discipline as a parent from their instruction, which is really intended to help their children know in advance how to live life as adults and get along on their own without being victimized (too often or too severely). I'm pretty 'slow' in that department myself, unfortunately. Of course, once kids become adults and have children of their own and then go through as parents themselves what THEIR parents went through with them, then their perspective tends to change and broaden, etc. I think there's an old saying that goes something like this: 'Men who hated their fathers in their youth build monuments to them after they are dead' and that's probably too often true, plus it is sad because this life is so very short. However large or long your own father's 'shadow' is, God-of course!-loves you as an individual for who YOU are, and wants you in His family in terms of who you are and where your own heart is at. Whatever your interests, talents, resources, and opportunities, God had YOUR life planned for YOU from eternity too. We're to honor our parents, but the 'challenge' of choosing to love and serve God for who He is remains personal, ours alone, as we plow through the character test that we call 'life.' I've never regretted making that choice myself, having done so as a junior in high school, and though I'm now age 64. (Gasp! When did THAT happen???!! As former Beatle George Harrison once observed: "Forty years goes by just like THAT!" ) Thanks again, Hokomani. I used to think being a pastor was wearing a suit and tie and giving a 5 point sermon and praying for people than going home. But the way I see it, it's about Experiencing God and The Divine and leading others to Experience that same Experience with God and teaching them these insights and Truths and helping others to connect to I AM WHO I AM!. I've encountered God and learned many things and I want to lead others to that Encounter with The Divine. God has given us The Ministry of Reconciliation and we want to help others Experience that same Oneness. I'm called to preach but the way I see being a pastor is way way different than how most view it.

1. 0:47 - It will be the hardest thing you ever do 2. 1:11 - integrity and love for Christ will not be enough 3. 1:30 - people will avoid you and act weird simply because you are a pastor 4. 1:55 - people will expect you to be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week 5. 2:18 - workaholism will be rewarded but it will destroy your family 6. 2:36 - When people stop attending your church it’s going to hurt 7. 2:51 - you’ll have to fight the urge to compare you ministry to other churches 8. 3:10 - attacks from inside your church will be worse than those from the outside 9. 3:26 - you will not be discipled unless you go seek it out for yourself 10. 3:47 - you’ll have to fight pessimism bitterness and even depression 11. 4:04 - your success in the eyes of others will be measured by how many people you can get into a room 12. 4:24 - you’ll never be good enough 13. 4:47 - your family will be profoundly affected either good or bad 14. 5:05 - without a seminary degree you’ll be less qualified 15.. 5:31 - money is going to be a problem 16. 6:03 - you will likely move many times 17. 625 - when you have to leave a church, you’re going to leave a lot of friends behind too 18. 6:47 - spiritual warfare is real 19. 7:22 - you will be discouraged and think about quitting often 20. 7:45 - it will all be worth it A side note: This is from a pastor that has ministered in the 21st century American context. People .. your pastors probably are struggling with depression and financially . Support them . We really do love you . We really do understand that we are accountable to God for what we say and do in your life. We gave up all we had to take a church God called us to. Moved 2500 miles, left parents who are aging , children who are marrying and starting their families, sold our home we just bought.. Not for $$$ but t answer the call. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done : it’s also the most rewarding thing I have ever done. People are hard . I pray for His love for His church.warfare is real. Your marriage will constantly come second to others. But it’s beautiful. It’s not for the carnal. You won’t make it with a prayer life, fasting and in the Word! Pray for your pastor. As a veteran pastor, all 20 things mention are accurate. Seminary or Bible college of some kind is important to make sure you know how to interpret Scripture properly. I have been blessed with a long tenure at my current church, but there have been really tough times. A pastor needs to be sure he is called, because he will need to trust the calling when times are tough.

I recently became an ordained Minister, I was raised Methodist and thought I would become a Methodist Minister. I found out that I would have to move about every 3 years! So I went somewhere else and became ordained and left the UMC, so I could preach in my own home town.!

christina...don't worry...god got your back...don't forget that you are an individual. you got a ministry too. if god is calling ur husband to pastor, he is calling you too. just as those people are his, they are urs too...you are responsible for those soul...make disciples...keep that in mine...how are u going to do ur part...if you do ur part...you will be fine...but if u just do nothing...it's going to be hard...with that..you will need to live a fasted life...even right now...pray for the people u are called too...if you keep them in mind...you won't live with regrets...if satan fights you...it will be the right fight..because he is fighting you to stop u from doing the will of god...so don't worry...god really got you...all the way...even when it dont fell like he don't got...he does...in those season...reference to when he brought you out or fought your battle...he is going to do the same...it's going to be hard sometimes..but you will get thru...there are going to be days where you feel empty....those are the days, god is saying, he got more for u...in that day...bless god becasue change is about to come for you...so pray until you get a break thru...don't forget to think about yourself...don't neglect ur self for ministry...it is not god will...what do i mean...refresh ur self...set boundaries in the beginning with the members...they won't have unnatural expectation...let people know where you stand...this is done in prayer...ask god to help you set the right boundaries...but pray always...if you are prayed up...it will set a sheild or a force field aroiund you...satan can't penatrate prayer...he can't penetrate faith, righteousness, salvation, truth, sword of the spirit....be blessed...this is a great work you are being called into...love and lead god's people...i'm so believe in you...

I’ve been in ministry 39 years. I agree with these completely. I would add that ministry will usually separate you from your family home ties. I have no family in close proximity geographically. Holidays are lonely because parishioners have family gatherings (Christmas, Easter, etc.) but my family cannot leave town and spend time with extended family. Few people understand this. Even my extended family; even after all these years!

Material manifestation will come as a result of spiritual disciplines, not just the good ideas of man. One testimony of Gods power touching someone at your church can change the trajectory of your life in ministry. Seminary and knowledge is important, but knowledge and degrees can never replace the work, freshness and anointing of the Holy Spirit. Seeker friendly messages will betray you. Preach the whole gospel even the harder parts that don’t seem to “fit” our culture. God is not embarrassed by anything He said. Seek wisdom everyday. God will open up the eyes of your understanding in ways you can’t even imagine or think possible. Don’t neglect the supernatural, be ON FIRE for God, administer money, time, and your other resources well. The Presence of God will sustain you were nothing else will. Your wife can build you up in a powerful way, PRAY FOR HER DAILY. Listen to her concerns, God will whisper (or loudly talk to you) His counsel through her much more than we are told, or are willing to admit at first. She also has your back and is a trusted voice and your number one supporter. She is just as important as you are for doing the ministry. Don’t fight this, embrace her.

As a pastor myself, I completely agree with all you have said. What one piece of advice would I give to any other pastor or aspiring pastor? You have an audience of ONE. It will be impossible to please everyone, so focus instead on pleasing the only One who really matters--God. This is brilliant. Very insightful and very true. I'd add 3 additional things: 1. Temptation is real and serious, and too many pastors fall prey to it - temptations to pride, unscriptural sex and the love of money must be battled. 2. Politics - too many pastors and members today, certainly in the US, toss their Bibles aside on election day and instead vote down the line for the secular political party they like most. They ignore or even justify or even agree with that party's wrongs or corrupt leaders in order to get the perceived benefits of the parts of their platform that they support. Pastors should avoid this sin, yet many, maybe most, fall prey to it too. 3. Just like we can be judged if we don't have a seminary degree, we should also be willing to listen to those who don't have them - they can often teach us a lot.

Let me tell you something, first of all, I been in church 42 years now. I've been everything from Young People's President, usher board President, yard crew, deacon. Who's church are you sitting under? Who's your pastor? You wanna shepherd people? You have to be called of God to pastor. Huh? You have to be called of God to do anything in the Lord. How well do you know your bible? What did Paul say in Hebrews? Talking about the office of the High Priest in Israel. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he who was called of God, as was Aaron. And pastoring, that 's a man's job. We never saw a woman High Priest in the scriptures. In I Timothy chapter 3, Paul gave the qualifications of a Bishop, which, is an office that belongs to a pastor. Paul said; The husband of one wife. I'm really curious to which church you go to.

I believe God called me to preach at the age of 12, I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour (saved and baptized) 48 days before my 12 birthday! I have not gone into the ministry yet because of fear, I ran from it because of that nothing more. I fear of failing God by missing the proverbial ”mark”. I am 45 now and I have recently started seeking Jesus with that child like zeal I once had when I first met him on the river bank! Before I got into ministry more than 20 years ago I was told that all apostles of Christ suffered terrible deaths except John who survived several executions. I was told by Jesus in Scriptures that we will suffer many things for His sake. I thought to myself; nothing is *sweeter* or a greater *honor* than to suffer for my Lord. 🙏🏼❤️ I have been enjoying insults, threats, slaps in the face, rejection and many other hardships ever since. I have a great job, settled family life and don’t know what the future holds. I have been immersing myself in the bible and find God speaking messages into my heart.
