I've been sewing a very long time. Here's my tip on how to judge if a fabric will wash well or not. If you are shopping for yardage ask the store for a sample of the fabric. Take as large a sample as they are willing to give you. If they are only willing to give you a tiny scrap then go ahead and buy the smallest piece they will sell you. You'll thank yourself later. Once you have your fabric at home, cut a square no smaller than 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm.). Lay the rest aside. Now here's what you do: 1. Trace the fabric onto a piece of paper and make sure you note which side of the fabric is the one on top. I sometimes cut off a corner of the square so I can align later. 2. Pin or sew the fabric to another, larger piece of light colored cabbage (yes, that IS the correct term for those left over pieces of cut out fabric) from a previous project or an old garment you don't care about. You'll be testing if the dyes will run as well as how the fabric washes and you certainly don't want to lose your sample in the washing machine. If you are testing more than one piece then pin them all and throw the bundle into the wash and then into the dryer. 3. When the wash/dry cycle is over retrieve the samples. *Look closely to the piece you pinned them to. Did the sample's dyes run? How badly it fray or wrinkle? If it is badly wrinkled then it press it with your iron. *Now lay the sample on top of the tracing you made and match the shape. How much did it shrink or fray? Now compare it to the fabric you put aside. Did the color fade or run into itself? If you are satisfied how the fabric came out then go ahead and buy all the yardage you are going to need. While I know we are trying to save money, I always buy at least a yard or meter more than I expect to need. I can't tell you how many times I mis-cut, tore, stained, or otherwise accidentally destroyed a piece of my sewing project and had to make another. It's heart-breaking, but much better than having to trek back to the store only to find out that the material is all sold out! If it turns out that you don't need that last bit, then save it for crafts or small gifts. I love to wrap my gifts in fabric instead of paper.

I have used a loop turner for years and found it invaluable when making thin straps especially on ball gowns. I've even used it or emergency household issues.

@@RomyStanZakStudio bonjour romy, got into sewing and knitting in a big way when our babies are born. beautiful wool and fabric shop near home and can make pieces which would be so expensive ready made but also not as much fun. I have a personal finance channel, and would be great to get your feedback and connect if you like it :)
