When the penny black was introduced, it must have been difficult sometimes, to cut the margins neatly under a gas or oil lamp. Especially in the winter months or by someone with poor eyesight.

I knew that was a plate 11 as soon as I saw it - the square bottomed J is a dead give away. (Plate 10 also has it, but has a white patch next to the O in one). It's a stunner. I have 2 examples as good as this: one i paid £1500 for about 10 years ago, and the other I found on ebay for £365. I think his valuations are spot on for 4 of the used stamps, but I wouldn't pay £40 to £60 for the 2 thinned ones. I think £13500 for the final mint one is a bit high: I'd value it at £8000.

The stamp lettered R-I appears to have a vermilion MX, although not mentioned in the video ; if so, that would significantly increase the value. CV is about 5 x normal red.

Although modern technology allows recent modern issues to be produced with good to excellent margins, good color, and intact even gum, the Penny Black was during its run considered a common novelty. The large spread in value from well-used to excellent mint shows that even a collection of common modern stamps well cared for will over time do better than scarce (or somewhat scarce) stamps poorly maintained and allowed to become riddled with flaws.

A penny black exists on cover sent by the Bishop of Bath to the Bishop of London. It is dated 3 days before the stamp was officially available. An error by the bishop rather than any attempt at fraud. This is potentially the most valuable penny bkack in existence.
