Awesome stories and collection! First video I’ve seen of yours and subscribed. I have a ton of these stories but the card I regret selling the most was an autographed 1953 Topps Mantle. The card would have graded about a 5 with a beautiful blue sharpie auto but I wasn’t concerned about the grade and just had it “authenticated” by PSA. I ended up selling it in an auction house and it only sold for just over $1k. This was back in 2009 or 2010. I’m more upset over losing the card than the $$. Hope to buy it back one day.

Thank you for sharing something a lot of us collectors wouldn't. My biggest regret was selling my 96 nba collection while in school. Nba wasn't something I collected too much of, but that year I had a bunch of the rookies. Kobe, O'Neal, Nash, Iverson and Allen 😪

That’s why I stick to only collecting pre 1960’s baseball and stick to only one sport. Even though almost everyone collects with the hopes of things increasing in value, I collect for the love of collecting. I only buy when I can afford it, and I stopped selling any of my collection. Awesome video man! I was hearing you talk about Kobe and was thinking the exact same thing then you said You were a Blazer fan. Go Zers! You from Portland? My way of thinking is you never know whats gonna happen in this hobby. If you got that card for 400 once it COULD drop back to 400. Even at 50k that like....being able to take a year off, start up funds to start a side business, or putting it in the bank and not having to spend new earnings on mortgage for 2.5 years, buying into stock while its low. If i had a card that valuable and my wife knew it......i wouldn't have that card anymore lol new sub btw God bless

Biggest regret for me revolves around the same product. In early 97, when the 96 Topps Chrome dropped, I had the chance to buy cases at retail price. A year later I had a chance to buy 40 Topps Chrome Kobe's, 32 RCs and 8 refractors for about $3500. I also remember passing up 86 Fleer basketball and Topps football packs at Kay Bee Toys and Toys R Us when they were 40 cents a pack deciding to buy Garbage Pail Kids instead.

Really interesting video. Life decisions in general seem so easy when you look in the rear view mirror. I used to have cases of sealed Pokémon / Yu-Gi-Oh and some super high end sports cards worth insane amounts today. Jordan Game jersey autos ect.. haven’t even thought twice about it. Just like stocks no one is ever capable or calling a top in any market. I know if I had held onto most of it I would’ve sold on the way up (and did for some stuff I found kicking around 5-10 years later), illogical to think in a 20 year time span you pick the absolute peak to sell. I’m sure you held the lebron not because you wanted to still “complete the whole set” in 2020, it’s because you were holding a “stock” that was going to the moon and all the influencers kept hyping it would go higher, human nature not to sell. And human nature not to pull the trigger when it drops from $280k to $200k ect… “I’ll sell when it hits the high water mark again” no sense living with regret! Just my two cents (I’m in theory a TCG gazillionaire if I never sold anything every… until 2020) but then again we could of all bought Tesla stock when it was $20…

I don't have anything nearly as valuable as some of these cards, but I do have a story. I sent in a few 1981 Topps Magic Johnsons that I actually pulled from packs to PSA during the boom. Since PSA was so backed up with junk, it took almost a year to get them back. I ended up getting all 8s which was awesome, but by the time I got them back the price plummetted. They were going for over $1,000 for 8''s at the peak, and one even sold for $1,800, but nowadays they go for $100-$125. Such a ridiculous dropoff.

Hey brother. Nice heartfelt video. As you may or may not know, I'm a hockey card guy. I don't really have any regrets, because I don't focus on money. I focus on sentimentality, and process as it relates to mathematical odds. To me, the hobby remains a hobby at its core. I believe our life's work and contributions to society are the best way to earn. I get that ppl make and lose money off speculation, including more broadly off of capital gains, but that is all too ephemeral for me. But invisible figures or material possessions should not define us, as ppl. This said, I did give one of my two 1979-80 OPC rookies cards that I pulled to my 11-year-old girlfriend when I was a kid. I still have the other one, ungraded. Had she not dumped me a few months later, I might have felt a bit better about it. On the other hand, I like that I am the type of person who would do that. And, it also explains the very nature of my comment on your thread. (And by the way, you cannot time the market. You speak like those decisions were losses. They are not. That's not how the market works. What matters is your reasoning at the time, which is contextual not in isolation. Ppl who think they can time the markets get killed, and don't manage their wealth very well.)

Great video and stories, I can appreciate everything you have spoken about as none of us have a crystal ball. I had a 2004 Topps Tom Brady Superbowl card auto/ball /99 sold back in 2005 for 400 bucks, had 4 raw mahomes prizm rookies sold for 40 bucks when everyone was going for kamara, watson, fournette, mccaffrey. Woulda shoulda coulda its all in hindsight now, I had many boxes of 03-04 basketball with so many lebrons i sold, I missed a great opportunity at my LCS i went to on a Sunday had 4 packs left in a box of 03/04 flair showcase for 10 bucks each, passed on them found out the next day some kid pulled the Lebron purple RC 1/1 and sold it a week or so later for 1500 to buy a car LOL. I used to crack boxes and just stuff to buy more boxes and feed my addiction. I have pulled probably 7-8 1/1 in my time and had sold all those as well, and to count the graded cards i let go back in 2004-2007 i kick myself in my ass, I used to walk into PSA to drop my cards off for grading back then, and it was like 7-10 bucks a card and i'd get them back in 30 days or so, the kobes and jordans and etc.. etc...

Sold it in 2009ish, fully intending to buy it back, as he promised he would give me first shot. He didn't. The guy that bought it got it graded, and he sold it for $26K. That Lebron James “Gold” card….before I get to that. I’m 41 and I grew up collecting w/ my father. We would get our monthly Beckett Price Guides of all sports and literally have fun reading and studying it. And it’s funny how you mention about the “young” collectors…man they are so full of dog do doo!!!! They’re selling their cards, especially Rantanen SP Game Used Rookie for $300-$750 and I believe it’s only listed for somewhere $65-$75, I don’t have my Beckett w/ me. And they’ll be like, well, Beckett is merely a “reference” guide and nowadays we don’t use it. Plus he just won the cup. I have 11 watchers too. I’m like, ok that’s great but I’m one of the watchers and you had this card up for almost 2 years now, WHATS UP? Now back to L James GOLD card, I was taught by my father and Beckett, if it’s a PARALLEL card of the Rookie and if it does NOT have “RC” next to it in the price guide, it’s not his ROOKIE. Parallels voids Rookie status. I’d rather have a card that serial’d low and commands a high value without the help of PARALLEL STATUS. Your thoughts?
@littlevictoriessportscards197
@littlevictoriessportscards197 Жыл бұрын
I would still prefer the lowest serial numbered one, the fewest copies made in the world. I regret not selling my Bowman auto of Bobby Witt right before the start of the season. I was going to use the profit on a PC card. It dropped immediately after the start of the season. Worth about 4 times less what I could have got for it. Good card still, but I prefer vintage or prospect hunting. Love that Mantle/Griffey that's dream card for all us during that time frame

Nice video. I have a kobe patch auto and a jordan (college) auto. They are probably value around $2k to $2,500. Should I grade it with psa or beckett? I prefer psa but they charge so much because of card value. Not sure if I should spend that much on grading. Thanks for your advice.

Really nice cards! If you’re looking at it in terms of investment and best resale value down the road…go with PSA. The grading cost is worth it, trust me. But if you aren’t worried about resale, you just love the cards and plan to keep them, then it’s really your personal preference. Which slab you like the look of the best. Which grading company you want to support. Hope that was helpful! Thanks so much for the view

I was around 14, my cousin and I were going cruising on a Friday night I didn’t have a lot growing up and we both collected cards but I decided I’d sell my MJ to get gas and the newest tape/cd that had came out and just have pocket money!! Big Mistake!!! HUGE MISTAKE!!! But it was 1991 I didn’t think his cards would ever be worth what they are today much less 2020!! Life Lessons I Guess!!!! I had a similar situation back in 2015 but the valuations of my cards were probably 15 X the values of yours. Very unfortunate and I beat myself up everyday over it but at the end of the day none of us can predict the future. I had a PSA 10 Jordan RC and RC sticker, Pujols 1/500 auto PSA 10 refractor. PSA 10 Jeter Foil. Unreal and now cards are being artificially propped up by bogus states card runs. I’m out of the hobby.

While watching this, my feeling is that there is too much velocity in the hobby and that speed is what creates more mistakes. For example, I recently picked up a Ridder card for $220. I offered the guy $200 and he said that was what he bought it for so he needed to make a little money. It seems like it would be better to hold that card to see how the season unfolds rather than take $20 profit after a week. People would think differently if they had to hold their cards for at least a year.
@littlevictoriessportscards197

16:59 collectors always determine the price of the card, i don't listen to any retailer, seller or the so called influencers, you can put any price you want on a card but if no one wants to spend the money then it's not worth that much, i remember a guy was trying to sell the first ever upper deck john elway jersey card (1999) for $1200 even though beckett and tuff stuff listed it at $300, but his reasoning was that it will be the last jersey card they will ever make of elway because he retired the year before i was so tempted to buy it because the broncos had just won back to back superbowls and elway was my favorite player at the time, it made me sick that i actually considered it, but jersey cards were a brand new concept and it was really difficult to say no to it, people were going berserk over these jersey cards, fast forward about 7 years later and i bought it on ebay for $75 keep in mind this was just a jersey card, not a patch, no autograph, not numbered, it's a great card with an incredible design and photo of elway and of course the way they shaped the jersey was just so beautiful, thank you for the video

Unrelated, I remember buying $200 worth of BTC during the pandemic ( I later sold it for $179 ). Months later those $200 would have been worth $1k. I slightly feel your pain man.

@@littlevictoriessportscards197 thank you. I have one question for you. I recently got into the card collecting hobby. Do you recommend only stacking PSA 8’s and above for long term investment? I haven’t bought any sports card rather nonsports cards like 1962 Mars attacks cards

@@merrymaurader2521 really depends on the rarity of the card. Cards with very limited print runs, I would say grades don’t matter as much. So you can hold onto those no matter what. But cards with high print runs, then yeah, I usually only keep psa 8’s or higher 👍 Thanks again!
