I have watched this video several times trying to follow the description you give for how you wired up the relay with a momentary switch on the shifter and I'm only left with frustration. A complete wiring diagram showing everything would be extremely helpful here.

just FYI, you mounted the solenoid in backwards. the 45 degree cutout on the body bracket is there to provide clearance for the TV actuator lever so it doesn't restrict its movement.

Can you show what should be done to the 200-4r if you want to convert the transmission to run a non-lockup converter

Great channel! Can you use lockup with only the 4th gear pressure switch (no brake switch or manual switch). Also, should the 12 volts be switch hot or constant?
@gearheadfellowship76904 жыл бұрын
Great questions and thanks for watching. Allow me to answer your questions in the reverse order that you’ve asked them. Your second question is regarding if you normally have 12 V going to the solenoid or not. The solenoid defaults or fails to the open position for the protection of the transmission. So if you lose the electric current going to the solenoid it will unlock your converter and protect the system. You don’t want to have your converter locked up when you slow down this would be like trying to stop a manual transmission car without never pushing in the clutch pedal. It’s really hard and the transmission really hard on the engine and definitely going to stall it out once you come to a stop. OK and your first question was could you just use the fourth gear pressure switch without anything else in the circuit; you could do this but it would be problematic it would probably lead to transmission damage for the reasons I just mentioned. If all you had in the circuit was a hot 12 V coming to your solenoid out of your solenoid to your fourth gear pressure switch and that’s it, then when the fourth gear pressure switch saw pressure it would automatically ground out the circuit completing it allowing the solenoid to close and locking up the converter that’s fine until you want to slow down. When you apply the brakes the converter wouldn’t unlock; only when the transmission will go to downshift it would unlock; when the transmission shifted out of fourth gear. This approach would lead to very rapid converter clutch application as soon as the transmission shifted into fourth as well as very late disengaging putting added strain on the transmission and the engine. The way the fourth gear pressure switch works is it grounds out the circuit to the case, completing the circuit. I hope this helps best of luck with what you’re working on.

So I can use the factory 4th gear pressure switch in my trans to ground the lockup solenoid when it shifts into 4th? I could put in a brake switch for a car with cruise control, and wire it to break the circuit when I tap the brakes.. and could also run it to a switch so I can opt not to run the lockup. Does that make sense, and does it sound like a good idea? Thank you for the video.

Checking in asking how the transmission has been doing? And I've bought a single Torqstorm and MSD Atomic FI for my 502, selecting a cam, and can either leave the 11" 3,000 stall Art Carr converter, or change to stock case CK 2,600 stall - both lockup. Need my (Art Carr) 200-4r gone through again to handle the upgrade-who should I go with?

Hey thanks for watching. Sounds like you have some big plans for that 502! I would reach out to Lonnie @ Extreme Automatics or Dave Husek at Turbobuick .com and give them a run down of our mods. They can work up a great package for your needs so I hear.

EXELENT LOVE YOU VIDEO FROM PUERTO RICO 🇵🇷 ¿ I HAVE A QUESTION ? i pulled the tranny pan on my 88 olds cuttlass supreme classic the other day. I needed to replace the tcc and while in their i went ahead and ordered the 4 gear pressure switch..... Upon receiving it and trying to install the 4th gear p.s. it would only screw in half way... I re tried many times,,, I didnt want to force it stripping out the threads... so went back to the orginal which screwed in all the way.... My question is,, do you know where I can find one ??thanks df

What do you mean, “if you have lockup”? I thought it was a standard part on the 200-4. I have a 1987 Monte Carlo SS for reference.
@gearheadfellowship76905 жыл бұрын
Great question; thanks for asking! All factory units came stock with the lock up function. However in pursuit of performance you can switch a valve in the pump and change the torque converter and eliminate the lockup function. This saves weight, reduces rotational weight in the driveline, and simplifies the installation into an older car. It has its pros and cons, thanks for asking!

So did all 200r4 have that solenoid? Think it may the problem in mine, but if it needs 12 volts, I wonder if the wire has just lost power outside of the transmission?
@gearheadfellowship76904 жыл бұрын
Yes from the factory all 200r4s had the TCC solenoid to activate the lockup converter. Thanks for watching!

Did you ever make the video for for fitting a 700-R4 bottom sucking filter onto a 200-4R? I wanted to do this and cannot find the video.

Thanks for watching! I didn’t make a video on the bottom feed filter. I ended up putting a Hughes Deep pan on it and it comes with the bottom feed filter set up.

Can I just disconnect the factory pressure switch and leave it in the valve body instead of locating a plug? I have already installed a pillar mounted on/off switch.
@gearheadfellowship76905 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and yes you could just leave the switch in the VB instead of installing a plug. Just remember the switch was providing a ground to the circuit so you may need to have another ground set up for the circuit to work. Best of luck!

@@gearheadfellowship7690 great video. How about just ground it to one of the tcc bolts? Bypassing the pressure switch. Thanks.
@cutl00senc4 жыл бұрын
I can assume that you’re gonna use a momentary switch because it’s just for quarter mile runs? Otherwise, why not use a regular on off?
@gearheadfellowship76904 жыл бұрын
Great question and thanks for watching! The main reason to use a momentary switch is brake application; when you hit the brakes in a factory set up the TCC disengages the clutch. A momentary switch with a holding relay, getting power from the brake blight switch does the same thing. If it was a toggle switch then after hitting the brakes in traffic the tcc would lock the clutch immediately which may be a problem if the trans downshifted, the engine was at low RPM, etc.... This is only a problem if you forget to toggle off the TCC when you hit the brakes, I’m very forgetful and don’t want my human nature to mess up my transmission. That’s why I built that safety circuit with a momentary switch instead of a toggle. Thanks again!
