Ladies and gents: There are TWO fuel pump relays (at least on my model; 07 SE). The larger one in spot #30, and there is a 20A smaller one in spot #16. I pulled the large one out first, ran my engine for a good seven minutes, it didn't die. I troubleshooted in the owner's manual, boom. Two relays. Died almost instantly. Regardless, good information & great video. Thank you.

I have an '02 Taurus with the same fuses as yours. I had the same issue after I pulled the #30. The engine kept running and started to rev up. I shut the engine down and then pulled the 20 amp fuse. It wouldn't start at all, so I don't think it relieved the pressure on it. Did your car burn the excess fuel, or did you just pull the filter?

Most of the Gen 4 Taurus/Sables Ford changed to a new type of fuel pump clip. The clips are still for a 5/16 diameter nipple but the shape is somewhat different making them not interchangeable parts with out reworking them. The clips are color coded with the black being 3/8 and the white are 5/16. The 3/8 is used where the hose connects to the fuel pump on top of the gas tank. Edward, Good job and I appreciate your can do attitude to make it work. Unfortunately the fuel filters tend to come with either no clip or the older style. If your car has the newer style clip make sure you check at the store what style clip comes with the filter and buy them separately if needed. If you put it back with out a clip it will not hold. Eventually it will fall off and you will be stranded.

The whitish clips on this fuel filter for this Taurus and some other Fords is Dorman part # 800-003. I think the black ones by the tank are 800-004 and you can get a mixed bag with 800-023. Why they don't just make them universal is beyond me...

Looked at the fuel trims and bank 2 is quite out of spec(at idle, clears up when she starts driving) so I thought vacuum leak. I replaced intake plenum gaskets and IAC gasket and still fuel trims aren't where they need to be on bank 2. Took it to the shop and they say no vacuum leak but that it might be clogged fuel filter or camshaft position sensor so I guess I'm going to try that

The reason why the white clip broke is that it is not made to be removed like that. It is made to be pushed in which caused the two outer legs to spread and open up. Then the fuel line will slide right off.

what u could do is leave the clip on the hose that is facing towards the gas tank. it doesn't need to budge loose. remove the clamp and the hose going to the motor. once drained, reattach new filter to existing hose next to tank then attach hose to motor and its corresponding clip. less hassle and ease of use

Edward, good KZbin. I changed the fuel filters on my 2007 Taurus about every 25-40K. Ran into the same problem you had and did the exact same thing; ground the clip to fit one side (towards engine). Could not get the clips furnished from WIX to fit the gas tank side. Broke one of 2 white fatter clips; had to salvage them (put them in), and wrap Motorcycle used inner tube rubber (1/2") around both clips and used wire tie to make sure they would not come loose. I have used WIX (my 1st choice), NAPA and finally FRAM. Same issue with all filters; none come with 2 types of clips. Next time will get Dorman clips per input from Autozone. Car now has 95K. No leaks; I am Old School. Drive on.

Wonder why would the clips that came with the filter not fit? Isn't it made to replace what was on there before to match that filter for that car? I've got a 2006 Taurus that is sputtering only when hard accelerating while driving. Idle is fine, crusing is fine and soft acceleration is no problem. And acceleration in park or neutral is good. It's just a problem when hard acceleration while driving. Wondering if it's the fuel filter or the EGR valve or what?! EGR valve on this car is hard to get to, behind manifold between firewall. Haven't gotten under there to look at filter yet.
@EdwardInTX10 жыл бұрын
I wondered about that too. Even the thinnest from autozone did not fit. That may be a dealer item.
@39thala10 жыл бұрын
***** I just replaced one on a 2006 Taurus. Turns out my clips didn't fit either. I tried grinding them down but didn't do any good. Apparently that filter fits a few different year models that don't all have the same kind of coupling and clips. So, they just put one kind of clip in with the filter that may or may not fit the fuel line couplings on your car. Someone suggested it may be an old style clip as well. Who knows? But I went and found the correct clip for just the engine side coupling at Pep Boys in an assorted pack off the shelf. But unfortunately the tank side coupling is different coupling called a "Quick release coupling" and requires a different kind of two piece clip set (a locking clip and a release button). And it so happens those were the ones that broke when I took them off because they had gotten brittle over time. So, I went to the Ford dealer parts house. They had the locking clip but not the release button called a "quick release coupling button". After researching it on his computer he found that the button only comes built into the coupling and line that goes back to the tank and I would have to buy the new line and that would require me to drop the tank to attach it. I said no way I was going to buy a new line to go from the tank to the filter just for that one piece, so I bought just the locking clip and put it in the coupling and it's holding just fine on the filter. It's ridiculous the was they have it designed because the nozzles on both ends of the filter are the same so there's no reason they couldn't have just put the same type of coupling and simple clip on the tank side as they did on the engine side. My mechanic friend said probably the reason they made it that way is because there is more pressure on the side coming from the tank to the filter so they decided to make that more complicated two-piece coupling. He said just keep a watch on it from time to time and if it isn't leaking I should be ok. Otherwise, if it tries to come off then I could go to a junkyard and cut that two piece coupling off and then carefully get that release button out without breaking it and then put it in mine.
@EdwardInTX10 жыл бұрын
39thala May just be easier to replace the fuel hoses and use regular clamp.
@39thala10 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for replying to my comment. I've been driving it two weeks now with no problem so I'll probably just leave it alone. I looked under there couple of days ago and the coupling doesn't appear to have slipped any from where it I pushed it onto the filter nozzle. It's all the way on there and staying on there pretty tightly so that's a good sign. And like I said, I was able to get the correct fitting locking clip from the Ford house and put it on there to lock behind the flange on the filter nozzle to help hold it. There's really no reason I see to even try to also put the 2nd button release clip on. You'd have to pull the locking clip off anyway in order to depress the button release to slip the coupling off. The pressure coming from the tank to the filter I guess is why they use locking clips instead of just a hose with a clamp. As you already know, the nozzles on each end of the filter have little flanges that the clip locks in behind to keep it from being forced off by any pressure. Ok by the way, the new filter did fix that sputtering on the hard acceleration that I mentioned on my first post.

39thala EGR valve would not cause this type of problem. More then likely a maf sensor or the throttle body opening is dirty.pull off the the large hose from it anf spray and clean it with throttle body.

ok, this was done all wrong, first use a fuel removal tool and you will never have to mess with the clips, second the one clip is not the same as the other, it is only sold at the dealership is a fatter clip. Never ever modify the clip, it is very dangerous. in an emergency you can use a zip tie to hold hose on filter by feeding it in the holes on the fuel hose like the clip would go.

He can not know the answer to that. You should have it diagnosed. If you want to waste money throwing parts at it, you got more cents than sense. Find out if there is a misfiring cylinder, at least. If only one is misfiring, switch coils to see if the dead cylinder follows the coil. If so, you need a coil.
