Just found this video tonight and was wondering the same thing. No updates since. Wonder if he installed some sort of T shaft right angle box like a peerless or something? Only way to go from horizontal to vertical that I know of.

I'm not sure about this set up but I've seen guys take apart the rear end and replace the internal gears and with chain drive to a solid axle. Search racing lawnmower axle. However on this setup I would guess vertical shaft engine with a belt from engine to clutch shaft of torque converter. The belt with twist going from the vertical engine pulley to the horizontal clutch jackshaft pulley
