The best home run hitters in Major League Baseball face off in the legendary Home Run Derby. Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs headlines a group that includes Ken Griffey Jr, Chipper Jones, and Vladimir Guerrero. The derby was held at the site of the 2000 All-Star Game: Atlanta's Turner Field.

@Harry Engel I liked how each home run we all can watch and admire how far it went, now it’s just so fast paced we can’t really admire the homers... it’s still fun but not even close how badass it was back in the back, especially with chris berman doing the calls

I was 12 when this aired and notice how the fans were excited and were there to have fun. If Griffey stays in Seattle he probably has 800 home runs. Was my favorite player until he went to the reds and became a constant addition to the injured list.

I'm so fucking happy someone finally downloaded this. Hopefully someone will download 02 where Sosa was launching it all over the place. Some clips are available online but the quality is crap. I'm hoping ESPN will put some of the older ones on. and holy crap I can't believe this was 20 years ago. I remember my grandma rented a condo on the beach for the week because I had family down and I remember watching the dodgers versus the Mariners because I was a huge Sheffield fan and the game started at 10 p.m. and I remember watching A-Rod slide head-first into Alex Cora's knee. I've never seen it again since that night and here they are talking about it

All you saying that 95-2000 wasn't exciting are a) Full of shit b) Lying your ass off c) Afraid to admit you were celebrating every HR until shit stained your briefs d) All of the above Baseball started to get really interesting since 1984 to me. There were a lot of stories that had nothing to do with steroids. In the early 90s, Nolan Ryan threw his 6th and 7th no-hitters. New, nice looking, ballparks were being built. The Marlins won a WS in record time for an expansion team, they dismantle the team after winning, rebuilt and won a second WS less than a decade later. There were a bunch of exciting stories that, AGAIN, had nothing to do with steroids. BUT, to come here and say that you were not celebrating or following the McGwire/Sosa HR race, or Barry's chasing all time HR record is pure BS. EVERYONE was into it.

@@postreading6889 Absolutely Griffey was on steroids when in Seattle. He was smart enough to take non bulking steroids like A Rod and Randy Johnson. He probably had regrets and escaped that toxic environment in Cincinnati. He learned the hard way when you go off the steroids after a decade of use you will get injured. And it happened just like it says in the textbooks.

Griffey isn’t as classy as people think. He went AWOL on the Mariners. The organization didn’t know where he was for multiple days. They finally tracked him down in Cincinnati. He drove across the country and didn’t bother telling anyone because he was upset the team wanted to trade him to the Mets instead of Cincy. This basically forced the Mariners to trade him to Cincinnati. Then when the M’s brought him back for his twilight tour in 2010, he was lazy and a terrible influence to the younger players. Not to mention the multiple times they wanted him to pinch hit and couldn’t find him, only to find him sleeping in a recliner in the locker room mid-game. I’m not saying he’s a horrible person, but he’s absolutely a diva and not as classy a player as people think.

You could not walk or stand anywhere without attracting someone to sternly telling you "need to go this way, can't stand here, need to move outta the way..." When kids' were looking for pre-game autographs during warmups, field ushers kept yelling at them to not touch the wall, pissing off some parents.

Remember when 5-6 home runs could get you in another round. I remember when they changed the way the format was I was upset but now it's so much better. It's so much more exciting. The only thing that I don't like is you don't get a chance to actually marvel with how far some of the ball's go to camera is changing every couple seconds and if there's a 520 ft home run hit you can't just sit back and enjoy it for a minute. It's on to the next next next next next. That and I think Chris Berman being gone sucks. If Chris Berman was calling it today will be so entertaining
