What they need is to have the cars look and sound like the IR05 chassis. In fact, just go back to the IR05 chassis with the DW12 safety cell. That's how NASCAR should have done it: implement the Car of Tomorrow's safety features on the Gen-4 car.

I was in the stands that day... Best weather for a race, partially overcast, mid 70s, wasn't super humid for once. The noise, the absurd speed and power of these cars, the smell of combusted methanol and the insane, intense action non-stop all day long. It was extraordinarily memorable. These cars were insane, and the drivers even moreso in order to pilot these at the limit in such close competition as they did back then. Biggest thrill.

Keep in mind Montoya won both Indianapolis 500 and Michigan 500s in the same year since Rick Mears back in 1991. Montoya is the only driver to win both 500s in the same year but in two different sanctioned series (During the Split). However at the 2000 Marlboro 500 at California Speedway (Now Auto Club), his engine blew up.

I'm so happy that the Indy Car series is posting these races from yesterday, free for all, to KZbin. On another note, perhaps it's an "apples-to-oranges" comparison, but how is it that these CART machines, reaching speeds well in excess of 240 miles per hour, don't seem to lift off the ground in a crash (i.e. 46:03) or a spin as readily as either the old Dallara IR-series of chassis or the newer DW-12? Is it the smaller front wings, the Hanford rear-wing, or perhaps the undertray profile is somehow different? Perhaps in an effort to simultaneously increase speeds (and thus excitement) *and* driver safety, the series should do a rather in-depth study of the older CART chassis to see what can be learned from the past.

@racerairman1018 жыл бұрын
LOL, love your handle! That said, the whole "lifting off at high speed" bit that has been plaguing the aforementioned Indy Cars (even the DW/IR12) can hopefully be remedied soon; from some of the more recent stuff that I've read, they've got some new aero components on the rear of the car that have shown promise in alleviating the high-speed blowover problem.
@TheUsmc08027 жыл бұрын
These cars were ful under body aero. They developed most of their down force from the tunnels under the car. Notice the small wings and the ease of passing.
@indyfan27 жыл бұрын
Don't forget those Handford wings had the obvious windblocking plate (acting as a parachute) creating the drag and a gap in the air generated by the car allowing the following car to draft pass him/her without the effort. It turned the race into a passing spree back then (1998-2002).

@Mhjeffrey027running4 жыл бұрын
Probably stems back to the days when Michael, Mario, Jeff and John Andretti would appear in the same race, probably easier to go with first names with 4 family members in the same race and as easy to remain with that style.
@DCTib7 ай бұрын
In the 1980's, 1990's, and early 2000's if people heard "Andretti" they thought of Mario...saying Michael helped distinguish that it wasn't Mario.

Hate the Hanford device. So artificial... Lower boost seems like a better way to go.
@DCTib7 ай бұрын
If anything, the Hanford device made the racing even more dangerous by keeping the field bunched up and constantly passing one another. I agree it was horrible...destroyed the authenticity of the racing and made the outcome a crapshoot. The stands started to become less and less full after the introduction of the Hanford device.
