I know everyone slags cable disc brakes, but I am a living breathing case for using them. The case is: very heavy rider + bikepacking bags fully loaded for a multiday cycle and camping + deep into Cairngorms or deep beyond Ullapool + shit weather and being far from any civilisation, let alone a good bike shop :)

I love all the thoughts of your discussion, although I will admit that I'm a bit 'old school.' I truly HATE tubeless wheels, especially for a road bike and haven't seen many actually have good luck. Now that is coming from the shop perspective, as I own a small shop... so see more than the average person/cyclist. Disc brakes, I don't mind them on my fatbike or mtn bike, but do not want them on my road bike. The truth is that I don't want the added weight nor do I have issues with stopping power on rim brakes. Thanks for sharing this post, fun to think about for sure.

Your enthusiasm is contageous, great video. There are many £2000 bikes with 105 hydraulic , no shortage now, plenty of sales on. + 1 for Planet x and take a look at Spa cycles, and for great quality at £2100 is the Fairlight Faran. I will probably pick and build my next bike myself like that, since I really struggle with the stock bike configurations. I was considering a job-bike-leasing program through my employer, but what little I can save there (most savings are for my employer saving on taxes) gets eaten up by the crazy prices for stock bikes. Looking at the catalogue options of the previously mentioned Look 765 Optimum: The SRAM Rival model with dirt cheap alloy wheels costs more than a self-built 765 from the frameset, with SRAM Force and Zipp 303s wheels, even when buying the components at retail prices individually. So between bike shop and Look they charge over 1500 western currency just for assembling the bike.
@draugmithrin

Self-build means you know the bike inside/out and future maintenance is easy as you'll have all the tools and knowledge. The cost is spread out by buying parts with expendable income, no need to take out finance.

Yep building a 90s road bike with modern drive train would be the right choice. Price 105 rim brake stuff it is almost free. Rival 22 is cheap. Centaur 11 Speed Groupset is 750 bucks online. A resto mod is the right answer. I love disc but I certainly know they are not needed at all for the casual rider. Heck the first disc win for the TDF was the last one. They are not needed unless you want to run highend carbon in the winter. But that is stupid also winter winds make those carbon wheels pointless except for the bling factor. I get the Young dude that pays bills bleeding brakes and routing hoses and di2 crap is pushing them just like the manufacturers are. Not necessary at all for most riders and rides. Now if you only race criteriums yeah you NEED them. But if it is about fitness and riding with friends you don't. The crap talk about cable discs is stupid also. I run them on my bike packing travel rig. Set up right and good ones work great. No worries in packing into the flight case. My pauls klampers with good housings out perform all but my campy ekar brakes. Better than shimano I have ridden and sram i own. Yeah harder to pull but they work great. They are the right choice for some bikes and rides. In the middle of Mexico finding someone to bleed your brakes good luck with that one. But then again most high end disc hidden cable di2 carbon aero rides I see are getting coffee and not doing much else but riding to get snacks and coffee on beautiful days.

TRP Spyre are excellent mechanical calipers that are "dual" and all you need is to make sure you put in decent pads and run a decent compressionless outer cable (like their own brand!). I think for the average Joe that hydraulic is overkill, and on a road bike I'm not sure I'd want that stopping power on skinny tyres in the wet. Mechanical is in the middle as it means you're not wearing away your precious wheels unlike rim brakes which get filthy in the wet too... (But off road it's hydraulic every time- XT on mine)
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan Жыл бұрын
I have Spyres on 3 drop bar bikes and love them. But it's not like you're perpetually locking out brakes with hydraulic. You're simply not squeezing as hard for the same braking. I have Spyres because they're light, relatively cheap and I hate how hydraulic brifters feel in my hands. But hydraulic with brifters are certainly better in every other way and even the hand feel is better for some.
@grahambleach
@grahambleach Жыл бұрын
As much as I’m happy with my Spyre and it is fractionally better than the Hayes CX Expert it replaced, I would get hydraulic discs immediately if it wasn’t such a ridiculously expensive upgrade. But this is where we are with Road disc brakes. The Spyre caliper costs more than the Shimano MT201 set, which while pretty basic brakes in the mtb world, are unarguably far better.
@veganpotterthevegan

@Graham Bleach the issue with road bikes is the cost of the hydraulic brifters over the actual caliper.

Much better option for that money is to invest in the state of the art steel frame from 90s, sometime for 300-500 EUR in NOS or near NOS condition, FFWD tubular carbon rim brake wheels and 105 R7000 groupset. Enough left for saddle, seatpost, handlebars, stem, pedals, bar tape, cables and nice Veloflex tubulars. It will be around 8.5-9 kg with pedals. It will ride so much better than bike on video.

One way of picking the fast, high mileage riders on a training ride is to look at the wheels and tires. They're the ones with the heavier, tougher, more durable, cheaper, slower wheels and tires. The expensive stuff is saved for race day. If they trained on racing tires they'd be getting new ones every few weeks.

Second that. I kept mechanicals on my gravel/road bike (tektro spyre, galfer pads & rotors) Mid range housing / cables. Quite usable, reliable even heavily loaded and doing technical descending. One thing I LOVE about them is, being spring loaded, they always come away from rotor and never ever rub! But I AGREE, the vast majority of mechanical disc calipers fitted as an OE are rubbish, downright dangerous even. Including the ones I replaced. BTW I'm primarily used to hydros from MTB. And I can also see why people want to hold on to road rim brakes too.

I keep saying it!! Hutchinson Fusion5 Performance TL. They may not be the fastest, but: Easy to fit (Hunt rims). No compressor needed. Don't rip or tear (I use them everyday for commuting). One tiny puncture hole (milKit sealed it). Long lasting (they claim 4000km and I believe that). I've set them up with milKit sealant, which I rate extremely highly. It is synthetic latex so it doesn't dry out out and is fairly thick so holds the fibres evenly in the fluid (unlike Silca, which IMO is rubbish). In 4 weeks I've lost 5psi of pressure (I run c.70psi) which I put down to the sealant not drying out. Give them a go!

2:07 Mechanical brakes where you can only adjust one piston and have to move the caliper over closer to the disc is absurd. actually decent mechanical brakes is feasible. TRP Spyke. it works well on an hardtail, but not an full suspension bike, has to have extra hose, and at the head tube it might be problematic, as there will be some wire pull if turning to extreme angle. the pistons on TRP Spyke eventually wore out after 2 years I think it was, you know when the Loctite 243 no longer helps to keep them secure, but that's easy to swap. with mechanical brakes you have to deflate the shock, or remove the coil. I had 1700mm uncut hose, so did not have to cut it. but now I have Formula Cura 4, there was shortage, butt then Geometron got them in stock, I see retailers have them in stock too, like bikester. TRP Spyke has independently adjustable dual pistons, one arm actuates them both. the caliper works well, but has an heavy return spring, so not ideal for kids, nor road bikes. There is TRP Spyre which is the road version, I am not sure what the difference actually is apart from the name and colour. Thye were fatiguing in the start, but I rode and was braking so much I worked up the stretch so when I returned to them it was no longer an issue, but the crazy amount of play in the brake levers was annoying, it was bad when new, but once nylon bushings wore there was a dead throw, so travel before the wire got pulled. not optimal. so as brake levers go I don't know of an decent mechanical lever yet. the pricier TRP levers go out of adjustment, the lever body flexes and the bolt unthread from the body, so you don't really have reach adjustment then, but Spyke lever has the adjustment at the lever blade, it works well, never comes loose. But I prefer hydraulic brakes, if they are reliable. So far I am happy with Formula Cura 4.

Just got my new Yoeleo frame yesterday. Very impressed with the finish but it's already giving me a headache with headset/spacer/stem options. Got a Ritchey comp switch semi internal routing bar, stem and top headset but the top headset cap/shround/cover/spacer sits way too high out the frame. Stuggling to come up with any solution, other than wait a 45 day lead time for the Yoeleo 1 piece carbon bar which I dont want. 1 piece carbon bars are usually 440 max and I want a 460 which they dont make. Anybody else had a similar issue?

Where is the industry going?!? If there’s a move from mech to hydro discs, will there be a subsequent move from mech to electronic groupsets?
@galenkehler
@galenkehler Жыл бұрын
Yes. I think electronic gears are going to be the future standard. Everything is expensive when it's new, and there's a bunch of lower budget groupsets coming in spring 2023. It's a simpler thing to do, ironically.

@@Mapdec My friend bought one of their bikes (the aero one, is that one called auriga?). Basically everything about it was about as crooked as i have seen. The head set alignment was tilted, so that the front wheel wasnt running in front of the back wheel properly. I bought mine for only $2250 free shipping I can easily upgrade the wheels to a really nice Stan no tube alloy wheelset 1300 grams forget your aero crap or I could get a really nice wheelset for 500 to 700 so I would have a full carbon road bike AND wheels under $3k for your squealing heavy disc brakes and that bike would be around 17 Ibs easily and your pig ugly alloy bike would be 21 Ibs and this is an aero bike. So the Pinarello would be more aero and lighter than some one on a $7k Trek Madone lol...

Maybe I'm crazy (that's probably true!) But why would you spend 2000$ on a bike when you can buy a used one for 500$ and spend 500$ and upgrade it? You are just buying industry hype if you spend that kind of money or are you buying name? Where has your critical thinking gone. Why spend crazy money on 13 gears when you can't maximize 9?

@stephensaines7100

I had to look that up, Googling for the name shows various hits. It wouldn't be for me, but it would certainly suit a lot of persons looking to buy. I'm really not a fan of 1X for a variety of reasons, but compared to what else is available new and retail right now, that looks like a good option. I know it's not popular to say so, but carbon for much of anything that claims to be 'gravel' or 'off-road' just lends itself to one big accident, and it's finished. Steel is still the material of choice for longevity, stability and ability to bend straight (with caveats) after a 'bender'. There's a reason that springs are made from steel v aluminum or carbon.
@Andy-co6pn
@Andy-co6pn Жыл бұрын
@@stephensaines7100 yeah I know what you mean about 1x, chain line isn't great etc , but where I live it's not mega steep. I don't ride on the road except for commute which is 50/50 and not every day, and I'm certainly not fast to warrant a bike that accelerates quickly for sprinting , more of a sitter and spinner.
