This is my first KZbin comment. This is the best video explaining parking brake shoes replacement. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for your video. I watched a dozen videos and not one of them explained how to adjust the parking brake like you did. Everyone else just sped thru it, or you watched them spin the rotor and adjusted the adjuster but nobody explained how it or what direction was what they just recorded them doing it. Thank you for explaining what direction was tightening and I adjusted till rotor wouldn’t turn then I backed it off 4-5 clicks and my brake on my 2008 RAV4 Toyota is working now. Great video Thanks

Thanks very much. I got ensnared into this job when I was trying to replace the rear brakes and the rotar wouldn't come off because the drum brakes were too tight. Had to pound the rotar off with a maul. Was scared to death I was damaging the hub. If anything on earth deserves the name "contraption", it's drum brakes like these. The design is at once genius and insane, like it was a mad scientist's work.

After struggling with so many other websites .... I literally stumbled onto this site .... I can't say enough good things ... this fellow is articulate, focused, and elegent in his use of simple tools. I was remembering an old saying ... "doing is easy, knowing is hard" .... Five Stars from me, and thank you very much for this tutorial.

Zeberka asked about the pad thickness. 2mm equals the .079 inches that you mentioned. This was THE BEST help video I have ever viewed! The help about leaving the retaining springs on and using the hooking tool to push into the slot was invaluable. Thank you so much.

Oh. My. God. You are a lifesaver!!! I just spent a full day struggling with the Bendix nails on my 2006 Sienna. I came inside after hours of frustration hoping perhaps the next day would bring a calmer mind. And then I found this. What a brilliant idea!! Every other video out there shows a brake assembly with easy access to the nail to support it from behind while attempting the balancing act of holding the nail, spring, washer, etc. I was swearing curses at whomever created this cursed design. And the next morning -- super easy. I bent a coat hanger for a hook and reinstalling the spring was 1-2-3. Thank you!

I was not able to make your method of putting the springs on the shoes - never could get enough pull on the springs to get them over the shoes. What I did was drill two tiny holes in the cups, each opposite of each other. Then I ground the jaws of a needle nose pliers to fit in the holes. That allows me to grip and push the cups and twist them onto the nails. Saved me a ton of time.

Certainly gave me a pointer after 40+ years of doing this crap I still learn something I didn’t know how to put the hold down springs back,being that everything fell apart trust me I tried,so now I know there’s slots,thanks However on your drum hub you got some excessive grinding noise,the reason for that is that it builds a rust ring in the drum,I always buy new rotors because you can’t get the drum machined ,if your using old ones then you need to really sand the drum very good,of course I don’t have that kind of time as I have many customers,thanks for the trick I needed

Would've taken me a week if I hadn't watched this. I did the parking brakes on my 2002 Sequoia--basically the same set up, just a little heavier. A 90 degree bent nose needle pliers around the hub worked better for me than the hook through that small access port. Great job, thanks for sharing the video with us.

This was a super great video! Well filmed and clearly explained. The two pins that accept the hold down springs and retaining clips are just TOO DARN SHORT for me to use your great installation technique. My springs are fully compressed with the bottom spring cap tabs already resting in the brake shoe holes. For me to be able to use your method with the 90 degree pick, both pins would have to be longer by an amount equal to the length of the tabs. You show it perfectly at 7:15 and 10:20. Both my OEM pins and aftermarket pins I got from Napa were the same too-short length. If they were the tiniest bit shorter there would be no way for me to install the springs. I spent HOURS getting the side in with the funky shaped pin.

John, Thank you so much. I normally look at this job like a plate of cold spaghetti, pretty un appealing. Between my 3 Toyota vehicles (all with discs) I/we drive over 70,000 miles a year so brake work and seasonal tire changes are a common occurance but I learned some valuable time savers... Thanks for the great detail and it is a pleasure to view without annoying/distracting background music.

A great video! I've watched several, and yours is miles above the others. I've got a locked up right rear wheel on my '95 Avalon. I'm pretty sure the parking brake was starting to lock up because the Emergency Brake warning on the dash had been lighting up sporadically. Last time out ,my wife had to drive about 10 miles with the wheel tight. Now I can hear it squeal when I back it up and down the driveway a few feet. Just waiting for a warm spell to do the repair. You explain everything, and show it as well with careful camera work. I know the tip about using the hook tool to pull those pins into place is going to save me lots of time and aggravation. You're also the only one to explain which way to turn the adjuster wheel. I'm hoping I can loosen it and get the rotor off without a big fight. Thanks again for your excellent work.

Video helped me with my Highlander brakes. I noticed that the pin for the rear compression retaining spring is supposed to be curved to not come in contact with the actuating lever. Mine was starting to straighten out from me pulling on it to slide the shoe on and the spring was loose as result, the backs of the studs on the hub were coming in contact with the spring. I got the hardware kit with a new curved pin, I put the shoe on the hard way by putting the spring on last and compressing it with my fingers. Now it sits just right. Thanks for the video.

I just did 1 side and doing the other side tomorrow... however, on my 99 Lexus ES300, I did not see a a triangular plate behind the top return springs. I was pretty organized, so I don't think it was lost if there was one. Is this a problem if the return springs are on the mushroom stud without that triangular plate?

Very helpful detailed video... I don't see this specifically in the video but can you please tell me... regarding the pins for the center retaining Springs that draw the shoes against the back plate... why is the PIN closer to the front of the car so much shorter than the other pin? I found the spring compressed all the way and I can't imagine how I'm going to get the spring cups back on.... the pin for the front facing shoe is about 1/2 inch shorter than the pin for the rear facing shoe....please help!
@sammartino2427
@sammartino2427 6 жыл бұрын
Hi not sure if you still need help with that or not, but will try anyways. The "rear " pin, with that funny shape, sort of like a "C", has to be placed correctly, which is, holding onto the shoe, and pulling the shoe to the rear of the car. The easier way to get at it when installing it, is to use the opening on the hub, which has several holes, between the studs. So, first put in the rear pin, then that cup washer, then the spring, then the top washer, and position the hub with one of the bigger holes so you can fit your pliers right thru, and lock in the pin. Hope that helps you.

I see you have jack stands supporting the rear of the Avalon on the pinch welds. How did you place them and not have the pinch welds bend? Also, I have Y shaped jack stands, and on the rear there doesn't appear to be a place for the inner part of the Y to support the vehicle, as the body slopes upward into the center of the vehicle.
@ipmgamer
@ipmgamer 8 жыл бұрын
First I used the floor jack to raise the whole rear of the car using the central jacking point. IE. I did not lift it by the rockers. Second I placed the jackstands under the pinch welds and lowered the car on to them. I understand the problem you are having My jack stands are flat topped. You can support the car using the trailing arm bushing mount. The pinch weld should never bend unless the chassis is rusted.
