Surprised just come across this now - somehow thought he was awarded Noble for poetry/plays! Belated coming to his Soul Mountain and One Man's bible. This speech might have too much political elements to my liking, to be honest, despite of his claim of the role of literature to the contrary. Granted he suffered a lot in China and the impressions may have left on him too deeply, hence he might have expressed the sentiments involuntarily or subconsciously. Some said he won because of politics, this may be too harsh. He seems a renaissance man of many latents! I could read him unlike Mo Yan who's book I could not read,

You may be from a foreign country and don’t know much about China’s history. People their age have all experienced the Cultural Revolution, a disastrous movement that has had an indelible impact on them. After the Cultural Revolution, the standards for literature have not relaxed, and the darkness of China’s officialdom and the lack of freedom and repression in society have not changed. Therefore, if you want to understand their books, you must understand that period of history and the general environment of China. Maybe Mo Yan’s novels have too much content about Chinese social background, which makes you not understand it.
