I really appreciate you guys putting in the time and effort to create this video. I very closely followed it step by step and was able to replace my head gasket and fix the issue I was having with exhaust gases flowing into the cooling system. There is no way I would be able to do it without this video! For anyone out there who is wondering if this is a job they should do themselves, I will be honest with you. This is a pretty difficult, time consuming, and stressful job if you are just an amateur mechanic like myself. These guys are pros and make it look easier than it actually is. From start to finish it took me 3 days to complete. It was pretty stressful for me because I was very nervous about reassembling everything considering the important components that had to be removed, such as the timing belt, valve train, and cam shaft, as well as the seals. I feared I would not be able to reassemble everything or I would mess something up in the engine. About half way through I was regretting taking on the job myself. However, I persevered and I'm proud to say that I was able to complete this job successfully. My car runs great, my issue is gone, and I saved around $1,000! If you decide to do this job, here's a few tips from me: 1) Before you start, put the vehicle off the ground with jackstands and remove the engine oil and coolant. 2) Make sure you are drinking ample amounts of beer or using nicotine so you can keep your cool and calm your nerves🤣. 3) Use penetrating oil and make sure you have good contact with some of the bolts that need to be loosened. Take your time, I had a few close calls with stripping the heads on a few bolt heads and I don't live in the rust belt. 4) Keep track of all your bolts and parts, I would recommend using sandwich bags and labels for everything you remove. I should have been more organized, it would have made reassembly easier. 5) At 15:40, that 5th manifold bolt is a PITA to loosen. You can't get a long wrench in there so you just have to pull it as hard as you absolutely can to loosen it. I was trying to get it loose for a while. Eventually I gave it everything I had and I was able to get it. However I didn't need to remove it because I ended up propping up the head like they do in the video and just replacing the gasket without removing the head because I didn't see any damage. Before I put on the new gasket I very carefully cleaned all the mating surfaces with a microfiber towel. This approach worked for me, but if You're head is warped or has surface damage then you need to remove it and have it machined. I hope everything goes smooth for you. Good luck!

Just bought my son an 03 ex, and it smokes heavy white on cold starts for a good two minutes. May be condensation in the exhaust, but my gut tells me it’s coolant in the combustion chamber, which would lead me to do what they did in this vid. Never done a head gasket myself; might be learning the hard way. What head gasket kit/set did you use? Any parts list?

@@tbarton5107go with a Felpro kits. You can replace the head bolts buts its not absolutely needed if this is the 1st time the head gasket's blown. About to do mine again, 1st time in was around 126000 miles ive now got 337000 miles in it so I've opted to replace the bolts this time. Another thing to consider go back after around 5-8000 miles and recheck the head torque again, glad i did at the time because they were not to spec.

I'm not the most mechanically inclined, but I recently replaced the valve cover/intake gasket on my 2001 Acura MDX and it was pretty easy. As the trans is going out (bought at an auction) i'd rather sell the car and get a civic. I found one online for $1,000 with the head gasket being the issue. After seeing this video, I know with confidence I can do this job. It's highly similar to a valve cover gasket job, just with one extra part of taking off the head. My minimal research for the replacement gasket is about $100, the rest is elbow grease. I hope I can sell my car in time to buy this civic and have it going again to be my daily driver! Thanks for the confidence boost guys!

This video REALLY helped me. The trick near the end about lifting the head with the intake manifold still attached with the center lower bolt was great. Love your video - I was able to do my roommate's gasket job this way. It certainly does get a little anxious to wiggle the timing belt around trying to slide them back in, but I took your word for it that the crank won't move as easy as you think.. or that belt skipping just doesn't happen all that easily as some say. The car runs nice and smooth now. Thanks again!

Just the other day, I purchased a 2002 Civic sedan with only 68654km (42659 miles) and the head gasket is leaking pretty bad, also showing some signs of oil consumption. I got it cheap though because it also needs tyres, possibly brakes, timing belt + water pump and maybe even suspension work haha and is unregistered and needs a roadworthy inspection.

Because the timing belt tensioner is to strong for you to pull it back on with your fingers. This is a “short cut” way of doing a head gasket on a D17A*. Its not going to give you any worthwhile time savings. Follow the factory service manual and DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. Also, this Civic doesn’t have anti lock brakes, and it’s much easier when you don’t have to work around the ABS unit !!! 😎

Had some problems getting my car started after replacing the head gasket on my 2001 Honda Civic LX. Good compression on all cylinders except cylinder 1 was a little lower than I’d like it to be. Ended up tearing everything apart to check the timing, torque specs on the head bolts, etc. Ended up just putting everything together again to just try it out and it started up after 2 cranks. I have no idea why it wasn’t starting but I’m not mad that it started up with no knocking. Extremely helpful video. Would have been more helpful to have you guys reassemble the whole thing to help save some time with scrubbing through the video. Forever grateful. Thanks guys.

This is a very valuable lesson, I knew almost everything, BUT - thanks for showing us the trick with that 5th bolt on intake! I was gonna take the head off with the whole intake on it, which would include so many hose disconnections, aaaargh, your way is the way of the pro 🙂

I'm in the middle of the breakdown on my '02 Civic EX vtec. I'm getting nervous, as I am at that same place (intake manifold bolts removal) and I'm getting a bit nervous to proceed, esp. as the section of the video wasn't the clearest, and they skipped a bunch on the reinstallation for this same area. Did you find additional videos, instructions that helped? Thanks.

Check your timing set the motor to TDC and if you pulled the rockers make sure your valves are adjusted to manufacture specifications

That's why better not to touch these unless you are fully trained. Engine work small like sparks, ignition coils, oil change, valve cover gasket are okay. But this one also the timing belt go to a qualified mechanic...

best way to get that intake bolt is to go underneath the car behind the oil filter. Once you remove it, u can clearly see it and u can remove it with a long 12mm rachet wrench. Btw u blew my mind that u didnt take the lower timing cover off. I will forsure use ur tip on removing the timing belt. Thanks for some tips.
