I think the movie is one of the best ever I don't think Cooper was one of the best directors ever if if you look at a lot of his shots he was really corny in a lot of ways you know but the ingmar Bergman David Lynch part of him when that would take over that's when the movies would become great.

Glad i saw this -- sure, Alec could have let Gary & Keir expand a little more, but just to see these two return and talk about their work and Stanley Kubrick is a TREAT ! There will never be another film like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw it the night of its debut in the U.S. and was blown away ...

Not to play 'Let's Top Dan' ... but I was lucky to have seen this at a 'SNEAK PREVIEW' at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, CA at age 9. I left there stunned, amazed and wondering how soon 2001 was from 1967. In later years, my late 20's ... I got to work for the Special Visual Effects jeffe Douglas Trumbull, (well one of the many on, 2001: A Space Odyssey) -- and that was an honor too. For what it's worth, Dan -- there's nothing like working on Film, TV or the Legit Stage ... and the memories, friends and sometimes enemies last for the rest of one's life ... ... or (no pun intended, as this is 'Hollywood') until, 'They Need You Again ...' Back in 1989, as a student of industrial design at KU, I had the chance to see a live synchronization of Coppola's Koyanasskatsi by Phillip Glass. Really good interview. They must have lost count years ago how interviews they have done but I suppose being together after all those years and hearing how much of a true fan Alec Baldwin is plus the great format - it even kind of fits with the movie - which is in a strange way a fantastic set driven movie. I never knew Gary Lockwood had just worked on the pilot of Star Trek before he got the part in 2001. Alec Baldwin's show didn't last but I bet he's glad he did this one. Yep you could argue that he interjected his own career heights into the discussion a couple of times but it also seemed like he was pretty excited to be getting a chance to talk with these guys - they look like they've lived pretty well - interesting how Gary Lockwood didn't care to be tied down to any particular tv show - so he met tons of people on all different kinds of shows and got to live as a free spirit Californian. The story about someone holding up their iPhone after seeing 2001 and saying they understood what the misterious slab is supposed to represent. It's even strangely prescient how when people wake up in the morning and the first thing the do is reach for that slab - just like at the end of the movie when Keir Dullea is near death and he points to the slab at the end of his bed.

Wow...I spent some time talking with Gary Lockwood at a science fiction convention; must have been in the early 90s (so long ago...but it feels like it was just last year). We talked about shooting the STAR TREK episode but, damnit, I wish we had talked about what it was like filming 2001. Gary was in much better shape...time catches up with all of us. It is hard for me to match the man from my memories with the man in this video. Be that as it may, I hope Gary has good health and good spirits for a long time.

I met Gary at the Star Trek Convention in Nov 2018. My wife and I talked with him for at least 20 minutes about 2001 and Star Trek. I bought an autographed photo of him and Keir in the pod conspiring against HAL. Gary was friendly and quite funny. He said was getting old and probably would not be touring anymore, yet I think he was at Comicon this year. 2001 has been my favorite movie since I saw it 1968 in Cinerama at age 13. Keir and Gary have been my heroes. It super cool to meet one of your heroes.

One of the greatest things about Kubrick is his brilliant choice of actors. For example, I would have NEVER picked Tom Cruise or Ryan O'Neal for their respective roles, but look at the results. If you want to see Keir Dullea at his absolute best, be sure to check out "David & Lisa." Incredible acting, incredible movie. About 100 years ago when I was still a bartender, one night Keir walked into my bar, all alone. There was nobody else there, only the two of us. He was an absolutely lovely man, completely open and friendly. When I asked him what the last scene of 2001 meant, he told me this: "I can't tell you, because even I don't know. Stanley wanted me to look confused in the scene, and I was."

Kubrick told Lockwood he cast him because he did a lot with a little. And I've watched all of The Lieutenant and Lockwood has a couple of crying scenes in it and clearly the tears were authentic, not glycerine -- in fact in one of those scenes he turns his back to the camera for a moment almost as if embarrassed by the tears -- so he was capable of emotional fireworks but either he didn't get much of a chance to show them off or he generally chose a different course.

What a great show! What a great interview! There's no one quite like a great actor that knows the great questions to ask other great actors about great works they were in. Did I use the word great enough? Anyway, this is a wonderful show, I enjoyed it very much almost well probably just as much as I enjoyed the movie because the opportunity to hear both actors and like a great interviewer, Alec Baldwin let them talk as much as they wanted to he didn't step on their answers and he asked great questions he wasn't a microphone hog like so many interviews are they ask him semi-okay question and then they end up talking over the whole answer that the person is trying to give. But when is a great interviewer here, I've never seen the show before and it's a real treat to hear Chevrolet and Gary Lockwood talk about anything they want to talk about for the specially the movie. I would love to see an actual interview with Douglas rain. Does one exist? Anyway, 2001 is like being there you really did think you were watching what was happening in space. This movie and the incredibly strange creatures who stopped living and became mixed up zombies are without a doubt the two finest films ever made. I also like mst3k San Francisco international. You pick some other films didn't do much for me. I mean I would say The shining was creepy but everything else just I thought was there full metal jacket was horrific it was like watching something horrific but I always kind of look forward to an unpleasant time when I heard of a movie with his name on it so would see bits and pieces of them through the years. 2001 is more watchable than the rest only because of its lack of unpleasantness not that it doesn't have unpleasantness but compared to the other films it's probably the least. When I think of great filmmakers I think of people like George Romero, Richard donner ingmar Bergman, Jimmy olp Jimmy peeveyz, you know what I mean. Think about it...........

Just a couple of small (very small) things. I appreciate it when anyone refers to 2001: A Space Odyssey without saying two-thousand AND one. These and more stories of the film are in Michael Clayton's new book on 2001. Having. Great time with it. How many of you think the physical sets themselves are game changers? They're insanely perfect. The pod bay....the command deck, the centrifuge....we have to thank the outsourced companies that created them. Just the way the pod arms worked...the detail of the door to Hal's brain...it just never stops. Read the book. The film changed my brain, back in 1968, in Cinerama. In 2013, I made a short film, Bum Rap - A Noir Fantasy. It's influenced by this film. Here on KZbin, but only works on laptops and desktops. Read that book. And let's talk about that leopard....

A masterpiece that is going to be discussed in history and philosophy seminars long after the monolith returns. The monolith, or genome, comprises the complete hereditary information of an organism, or the information of just about anything, encoded in its DNA. Does any of this sound familiar? This would also be the most efficient way for an advanced species to engineer and propagate packets of information across stellar distances, I imagine. A show like this should be left to let the main characters contribute THEIR comments. Not simply serve as a vehicle for the host. This would be really bad if the artists were from a bad TV show. When it's a movie from Kubrick, it should be flat illegal. As bad as many shows like this are, at least 2001 (or any movie) is there and can be apperalled to, watched and enjoyed. This interview - and this shortly-lived talk show - was a total embarrassment, I remembered this when it aired. I won't even attempt to rewatch it. I think the most cringeworthy part was Baldwin asking if the movie helped them get laid after it came out. Love 2001, I like Alec Baldwin as an actor, I have no problem with his politics...but this was a trainwreck,as far as Im concerned. I remember this was one of the first episodes of his show, it was hyped all week....and then I was just cringing throughout. You'd think an actor would have better questions for other actors. I like Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood, but their commentary track for 2001 is also a dud. (to be fair, they shot their scenes and were done with it, probably circa 1965, 1966. Kubrick and company labored over that film for three years).
