The most memorable ride i had on my wide glide was I rode back from Devon on a freezing cold February day .As I went by stonehenge the road was empty and the sun was just going down behind Stonehenge as I approached it late afternoon .The sound of that twin screaming eagles pipes and the sight of stonehenge as I went past was something you only experience on a Bike. That was in 05 and never forgot it .Oh and yes I still have the wide glide .

I now find my self in a position financially that I could buy any bike I want. I found a 2000 model carbureated FXDWG, this past February 2021. It was so clean with only 22,200 miles on it, I just had to buy it. I've been riding a StreetGlide for years, and this WideGlide is so much lighter and nimble. Two totally different rides. Keep in mind, the early model TwinCam engines have the spring loaded Cam chain shoes. They need to be replaced every 25,000 to 40,000 miles. They shoes need to be checked every 10,000 miles after the first 20,000 miles.

Make sure you check those cam tensioners. If that plastic that the cam chains ride on crumble and the metal falls off it can destroy both top end and bottom. It is quite expensive to change over to the 2007 and above hydraulic tensioners plus the improved oil pump and cam plate. This should be the first thing you do is at least replace the cam tensioners. Better yet buy the whole kit that has the new hydraulic tensioners, oil pump and cam plate. It is expensive but well worth it. You can do it yourself however some special tools are needed. Have fun I had a 2005 Wide Glide and I loved it. Not sure why you got rid of the dyna switchback I thought they are much better to ride than a Sportster or Wide Glide.

Hey there!! Looking for some helpful advise.. I have the opportunity to purchase (from a friend) a 2001 Harley Wide Glide 88 Cam. 14K Miles. I have always rode Honda Cruisers so this would be the first Harley. Do you think this would be a wise purchase since it is more than 20 years old. The bike is in great condition... Garage kept. Is it even worth the trouble??? i have an '08 so I would be getting an older bike.
@HippieBiker13692 жыл бұрын
If it is as you say, age shouldn't matter if your friend kept up on the maintenance. One thing everyone on here kept telling me was to upgrade my cam chain tensioner because apparently it was somewhat problematic with the early twin cams. I had it inspected by a mechanic I trust 2 months ago when I had service done to the bike. It was in great shape no wear or signs of a problem. We talked about upgrading he suggested for now to just inspect it periodically.

@Juggleupjuggleup you don't like movies? People need to get a life. Hippie Biker is used in jest. It's a term I heard used aimed at long-haired bikers during the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. In reality, "biker" can be a motorcyclist, bicyclist, etc. As for Hippie, there really wasn't such an animal except made up in the minds of journalists and pop marketing of the youth movement. Personally, I have identified as a "hippie" along with my schoolmates since the 7th grade (1967). I have identified with motorcycling since I can remember, riding on the back of my father's WL or his Indian chief. Since I continued to become a motorcyclist into my adulthood and, for the most part, except when I was a soldier, I tend to wear my hair long, listen to the same "Hippie" music of my youth and ride my Harley-Davidson. I resemble the Term "Hippie-Biker" and if any have a problem with that, they can go ahead and make an appointment with a counselor.
