Wilfried Peeters was a BEAST in this and so many other races! He was the epitome of a super-domestique...always doing yeomans work for his leaders, always there to the very end, but only getting on the podium a few times in his career.

today's modern pampered pros have no idea what it's like to ride a proper P-R, skirting off the cobbles onto what is virtually a flat track and dodging the actual cobbles far too often. Also with the advent of modern tyres and using wider rubber plus carbon bars and frame, better saddles and gear, the riders now have it cushy as fuck by comparison.
@collinboule17064 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with advances in technology.... today’s race is still pretty much the same course....
@taylorallen53964 жыл бұрын
I think the new stuff only makes the speed a little faster. I don’t think it makes the race any easier to ride and especially not easier to win. However, I think most modern riders are a little spoiled in that there hasn’t been another wet Paris Roubaix like this one or the year after when there was active rainfall.

Why do athletes celebrate before they finish a race?!? There have been many times where one athlete is so busy celebrating that an athlete comes from behind and beats them. Then this guy rides no hands with arms up in the air and almost falls. STUPID. When you are about to ride into glory ....concentrate, put your head down, and do all the stuff you learned in training. Then celebrate after you win. Just my opinionated opinion.
@johns31064 жыл бұрын
The arms raised victory celebration in cycling is an opportunity to show off your sponsors name(s) that are splashed across your chest as you cross the finish line in glory! Pro cycling would not exist without sponsors, so most riders will take every opportunity to get that name recognition out there and keep sponsors happy, and winning a race and clinching that photo op. is a big plus! That being said, there have been quite a few instances over the years where premature celebration resulted in the "winner" bring nipped at the line!
@oldtwinsna83474 жыл бұрын
they need to zip up their jersey to show the sponsor and open their arms at the line. failure to do so reflects poorly no matter how great the win.
@michelvandyck85894 жыл бұрын
Maybe because he has a full lap advantage??????? He could have walked the last 100 meters (as long as he holds on to his bike).

Frustrating because they refused to cover the leader for much of the latter part of the race...they refused! Arrrrgh! Even at the end they focused on the American instead of the winner.
@johns31065 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you're referring to the cameras or the other riders...tactics dictate that the Domo riders (Meuseuw, Vainstiens, Knaven) are certainly not going to chase down their team mate (Peeters), and the other riders in the break don't want to drag fast finishers such as Vainstiens and Meuseuw to the line...no, it is up to strong riders on the day such as Hincapie and Dierxsens and Weseman to wait for just the right moment for a blistering attack to leave all the others behind...but this is very hard to accomplish when there are 3 Domo riders in the break (resting in the bunch because Peeters is up the road) who can take turns chasing down any breaks. Once Peeters was caught it was Knaven's turn to fill this role, with his remaining team mates still able to enjoy a free ride. This is the intricate beauty of team tactics in bike racing! Those who believe Hincapie wasn't given a "fair shake" have no one to blame except his non-existent Postal team mates!
