2001 to 2007 Chrysler Town and Country Power Steering Pump replacement

The power steering pump is being replaced in the 2006 Chrysler Town and Country with a 3.3 engine.

I now know for sure that I'm hiring a mechanic to do this job, especially if I can find one who would do it for only $500! I'd have the mechanic also replace the reservoir tank, serpentine belt and belt tensioner at the same time, saving the extra labor costs down the road. And DEFINITELY get a new pump with NEW PULLEY already installed on it. It's just plastic and not meant to be reused for years to come. Old pulley could crack or break down the road. And this saves on not having to rent or buy a "puller" from auto parts store. Thanks for video.

I did mine last week this video was very helpful but I found a shortcut that makes the job easier by not lowering the pump down by the catalytic converter to remove the pressure line. You can remove it without moving the pump at all by using a 16mm crowsfoot wrench, long extension, and a ratchet. Can access it by reaching back between the pump and the firewall. This skips the step of lowering the pump down. The fitting is threaded into the pump facing the front of car so just make sure to loosen in the correct direction.

You can take that whole windsheild wiper shroud off in less than half hour, you should have taken that off so it was way easier. Also I'd say change the power steering reservoir at the same time the filter in it can get plugged over time so fluid can't run thru it properly, I'd say do the reservoir first and if the noise don't improve then I'd move on to replacing the pump. Don't cross thread the high pressure line putting it into the new pump either be very careful. You can unscrew the two 13mm bolts holding the high pressure line in place and pull it up higher to carefully screw it into the new pump with 16mm wrench and then bolt the pump in place and then you can tighten the 16mm nut on high pressure line down some more so its tight. Put the new orings on the high pressure line and the low pressure fitting as the orings are what keeps the fluid from spraying out and leaking once you put it back together. He did disconnect the two 13mm bolts holding the high pressure line in place there are two of them and the bottom of the line will still be screwed it at the bottom that you leave it screwed in.

The windshield wiper assembly got removed and was able to get a crow’s foot on the high pressure line. The breakaway torque was unreal. Once broken it was finger loosened. With the extra real estate opened up picked up plugs and wires. Mine has 230,000 miles so this is probably it’s last set that I am buying it.

@@ChrisinOSMSyes. I had a super hard time getting enough leverage to break the 16mm high pressure line off. Just no room. I ended up using a wrench and leveraged it with the belt removal tool. It was a long piece of metal essentially. It was the only way to break it loose. Unreal how tight it was.

You are one of the best at showing how to replace things. 4 years ago I had a shop replace mine $600 and my warranty paid. But I gave them a auto zone pump. They got the job done and then said the pump was a lemon ! They redid with a Napa pump. And Ithen paid out of my pocket. I am now wondering if they just clean the fluid storage screen ! It starting to do again and I replace the storage container. If one has the balls to do, they know its done right.( only God knows if I got screwed!) And the van now has over 100 thousand miles so next a fun timing belt ,water pump, and maybe a good idea to put a new crank seal in. -- If I watch how to do videos on here - I done my self. As I not had a clue how to put my new auto zone pump on then. Then a night mare when I started to try 4 years back.~~~ 10 stars for you Bud.

Great informative video, thank you for sharing this. I am in the process of changing the high pressure power steering line on our 2006.... I managed to get the old one off a couple days ago, now I have to install the new line... Just a thought, when I replaced the water pump a few years ago which is directly bellow the power steering pump I loosened the passenger side engine mount so the engine came down around an 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Perhaps doing the same would make things easier when trying to get to the bolts inside the power steering pulley, for removal and installation. Thumbs up! 👍🏼

Glad to help. I did not think it was hard the way I did the job and I would not bother removing anything else. If you need to replace the rack you might as well do it at the same time so you do not waste fluid.

As a warning to people: DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF UNLESS YOU HAVE A LOT OF TOOLS TO FIX THINGS IF IT GOES WRONG. I did this job myself and the flare nut stripped out, there is virtually no possible way to actually get the flare nut into the power steering pump once it cross threads (80% chance it will crossthread) if you can get a mechanic to do this HELL of a job for $500 that is an amazing bargain and good luck!

Any advice on how to thread power steering line back in? I'm new to working on vehicles and I cant get it back in for the life of me. I've only worked on motorcycles. I dont have the cash, got a new line though and the guy that took it off is a mechanic that couldn't get it back in. I feel like I line it up with what I believe is called the rack but maybe it's off a hair and I just can't get the new line to thread. No matter how much I mess around with it. from beneath the van and beneath the hood. It's driving me absolutely crazy.

It's much easier if you pull the windshield wiper tray off first. Takes just a few minutes and then you have much more room to work and pull the pump up from the top. The hose can remain on the pump as you drag it over and be replaced there rather than trying to remove it while attached to the engine.

Mine makes a LOT of noise, and from what I've been told, the pulleys on these minivans are prone to bearing failure. There's nothing wrong with my power steering pump, but I'm going to change it because of the stupid pulley noise.

I changed my serpentine belt tensioner pulley at the same time I did my water pump and that was before the power steering pump. You do know that there are no bearings in the power steering pump pulley. The bearing noise is from the pump bearings. The pulley is just molded plastic part.

Four or five questions. Why couldn't the original bolt be used for the new pump? was it a different size? Did the original bolt have that many washers in place when you removed the pulley? appreciate your analysis so didn't removed converter and axle. thanks. you said you removed a sensor. was that the cam shaft sensor? because you have to put a spacer on the end of the sensor when reinstalling it. Curious, was there a spacer on end of camshaft sensor if that was the sensor you was speaking about?

+Scott Watkins Hello, The bolt I think you are talking about is the bolt I used to press on the pulley onto the pump. Every time I rotated the bolt one turn, I took it out and put another washer on it, so it would not bottom out in the hole. After the pulley was fully pressed on, the bolt is removed. The pulley was only pressed on and did not have a bolt holding it on. The only plug I took off was from the sensor in the air duct going into the engine, just to make more room to work. I believe it is the mass airflow.

Man! This looks like a hair puller of a job. I have done lots of diy jobs on my vehicles but this looks very time consuming. I guess thats why the shops charge what they charge. I cleaned my reservoir on my 2005 DGC year ago. All was good till today started sqealing again so I bought a new one from advanced auto, changed it, and not same result as with the cleaning. It quiet it down a good amount. But still little noisy. Debating on doing it myself or forking up the $$. GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR DOING IT. I KNOW THAT IF I DECIDE TO DO IT. I just did this, but couldn't get at the high pressure line compression fitting. You did it from the bottom? How exactly? I couldn't get my arm up well enough to get some leverage, and same from the top. Any tips? Thanks for the video and tips.

I was able to get the line disconnected from the top or bottom. You cannot see it from the top, so you need to feel in back of the motor by the fire wall on the passenger side. If you want to get it from the bottom you can take the pump off the engine and drop it down on top of the exhaust with the high pressure line attached and then disconnect it. I think it is easier from the top, but you have do it by feel. I used a line wrench, It should not be that tight. When I did the video that was the first time I had ever done the job or seen the pump off of the vehicle so I pulled it down so I could see it. Hope that helped

Yes, that makes sense to release the low pressure line and drop it down. I actually had the three bolts out plus the low pressure line, then thought I'd need it bolted in to get the leverage on the high pressure line. So I bolted it back in and found I couldn't get a wrench on the line. Good call on the line wrench--I don't have a set so I'll drop the pump and be careful. I appreciated the video, nicely done.

Would you recommend this for a intermediate auto repair diy? I've fixed many things one my cars over the years but never anything this big. I don't have hundreds of dollars to shell out for the repairs and I already bought the pump online. Will you please give me a list of all the tools I would need? I do not know your abilities so I can not say if you can do it or not, I did not think it was very hard. I do know I needed a puller to change the pulley and I borrowed it from Advanced. I do not know what other tools were needed, you will need to watch the video.

Just make sure you put new fluid in if you change the pump, if the pump is bad. If the fluid smells burned it will be bad for a new pump. Good luck!

Its actually a bit of a pia...me and my buddy whos a mechanic did it at his home garage last night and it took us 5 hrs....yea.5...hours.was not good times.its just a pain all the way around.radiator swap including pump,overflow and all hoses took us an hr and a half taking our time...course with this one the Allen head on the line stripped,so had to grind it and find a new bolt,amongst other complications..this van wasnt maintained before me either,so thats alot of it.basically never want to do another one again...

Almost nobody laughed and business that will even consider doing a power steering line on a 2002 too 2007 lol. as far as I know if you cantget it up on a rack . The only other way to do it is take the transmission out so you can get at where the line bolts into the power steering rack and it's a 50/50 to get the cunk of the old line out and it not be permanently seized in the rack:(. i blive it or not to chang my power steering pump cut the line do to it being seized into the power steering pump and than have a pice made wich cost me like 30.00 and put in a brass union.we several times tried using hose clamps and pressurized hose but you can't get the good hose clamps here and they would break after about an hour or so. sofare the Union is working. my cousin fix/sales old Dodge minivans and hes had 7 wear the line was seized in the pump and he had to cut the line and pout a brass union on to put the line back together.i jest had loke of the draw the line was damage so i had to pay 30.00 to have something made lol. none of the mechanics around these parts will even touch a power steering line project on a minivan.my naber's 99 brow a line and it's in a place you can access on the rack without taking the transmission off on the 99.the dealership charged hem like 200 or 300 for a line i cod have got in at Napa for 39.99;) and i forget how much he had to pay to have it put on and it took tham a week of grief and that mechanic will no longer have anything new with power steering pumps on minivans lol. my cousin is 200+ miles from me so I could just take it in and have them do it lol he has a full sat up with a flor holies and what not and more than likely could've put a on without taking the transmission out lol. sofare after a moth of bs it seams i get it working with out it and emptying the entire contents of the fluid out on the floor lol.you don't know how many times of the line breaking and what not befor my brother found out a shop hear still makes hydraulic line's and such for vehicles.i dalt with a took similar situation on a 87 gm wear you cant get the return line fitting that go's in the power steering box and in 02 i had to pay a shop 40 bucks to make me a line/fitting that if somebody like Napa or GM has still made them would've been like 9,99 but it's one of those weird little parts. Nobody sells or makes short of having it made. ouds are your in the usa so you don't realize the significant difference when it comes to trying to take parts off of a Canadian vehicle versus parts often American vehicle lol. we have 5 year old car's hear rotten worst than a 40 year old us vehicle depending which state you're in ;).hell something you wood see for 500 in the us in my par of canada wood go for a few grand do to you literally just can't get them down here.

I am not sure if you can get the fitting you need but you should be using a Aeroquip line for the pressure line if you cannot get one from the dealer. Summit racing sells them. And most NAPA stores will make them as you wait.

Turned out it was not the pump, the diao's in the alternator went and it was causing the scream. My metal coolant pipe is fine because I undercoat each fall

are you supposed to bleed the system so you don't get air in the lines and make the pump whine ?

The tank is above the pump and the fluid will displace the air when you fill up the tank. Wait a few minutes after filling the tank and then turn the pump a few times before you start it and that should get enough fluid into the pump. This is not a closed system like brakes. Good luck

My pump was making noise and I did not want to put up with it. If you have a pump that gets really bad it will seize and you accessory belt will come off and you will loose everything. Good luck
