It's not a common repair to replace the PCM, on the rare side. But updating to the latest calibration, I do that for any vehicle I come across. I view it the same as updating Apple iOS or Microsoft Windows. ;-)

Hey so just to be clear you can use and rewrite a salvage PCM but if during the calibration something goes wrong and can’t finish the update then you’re SOL?

If something were to go _wrong_ like say a power failure during the calibration update then yes, you can brick the module. The GM PCMs are fairly robust though, so it would have to be something catastrophic like that to brick one. The TIS2Web/Techline Connect software won't let you install an incorrect calibration for the PCM part number and VIN, so that part you're protected from.

That's right the Tech2 using the old TIS2000 DVD is completely offline, no subscription required. But it only covers thru model year 2007 (and I believe it is missing most of Saturn which had their own unique tooling back then). Down the road you can still use your Tech2 from 2008 thru 2013, but you'll need to pay for TIS2Web, with an online subscription (around $40 per VIN for 2 years).

The Tech2 is going to want to see the BCM in the circuit. If you're using another aftermarket type tuner tool you may be able to get by with the PCM all by itself though. Haven't personally tried either, so couldn't advise further.

Hi Dr. Shock, I accidentally reverted the GM 33.004 software on my Tech2 to an earlier version, 27.010, by using the download software function on Tis2000. I managed to find the GM 33.004.bin file on the Internet. Is there anyway I can use TIS2000 to download it back on my Tech2 (memory card)? Thanks.

No, as you've learned TIS2000 only comes with a very old obsolete version. You would have to go to www.acdelcotds.com to download the latest Tech2 firmware, but it'll cost you well over $200 to do so. Cheaper to find an used memory card on eBay with the right version, or track down the old card_writer.exe utility that could do so from a PC with the appropriate PCMCIA adapter.

@@DrShock thanks so much for the reply. what error message appears when GM prevents you from flashing the same calibration number onto the ECM? my SPS programming fails at around 80% with error message "Utility 12608523 Line 18 Operation B0 Errorcode 85". I'm almost positive that no double flashing of the same calibration number is the cause. At around 9:20 timeline, you mention about a tuning tool that goes in and just changes the VIN on a ECM. Do you mean like EEPROM stuff? Could you leave a link to such tuning tool? Thanks so much for what you do.

I've never seen such an error from a Tech2. But it's definitely not the message for a calibration overwrite, that one would be in plain English. This message looks more like a hardware problem. Either internal to the Tech2, or with the module itself. The tool I mentioned would be aftermarket to alter factory calibrations. I don't have a particular link as I do not use such tools, and they are not cheap, but _EFILive_ is the one I had in mind when making the comment you reference.

How would you approach a vehicle with a salvaged engine and brand new ECM... without knowing the vin of where the motor came from?

For a brand new ECM/PCM you would have to go the scan tool route with GMs SPS2 subscription (J2534 type tool). More than the VIN has to be encoded onto a virgin module, it needs what GM calls a _calibration_ as well. The scan tool will program it with the VIN of the vehicle it's installed into. So where the salvage engine came from would be irrelevant in this case you describe, where one has a brand new or OEM remanufactured module.

Yeah, the only source for SPS2 is direct from GM at www.acdelcotds.com and they sell subscription by VIN. You would need a battery maintainer, not a charger, especially if it's a newer vehicle with other modules that could be drawing power. For a very old vehicle, like from the 1990s, this is less of a concern as there's usually only the one powertrain control module there.

For one tool to rule them all, only the ThinkTool Pro. All car brands in one type bi-directional scanner and reprogramming tools are professional shop grade, and are not going to be cheap due to having to handle multiple OEM proprietary capabilities.

I presume you're referring to the 2.2L Ecotec with compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel. As best I recall it's the same PCM part number, but the programming is very likely different. So you have to be sure someone is using a genuine GM Tech2 scan tool to program from the GM VIN online database (not just editing the VIN digits with an aftermarket tool) to get the correct CNG calibrations flashed.

Definitely you're not going to find any tech's there familiar with these older vehicles. btw, I would expect the original CNG fuel cylinder from GM to have expired from 2004, so you might check that also as a safety consideration.

When you said "Tuning tool to just go in and jsut change the VIN", do you mean like a KESS or KTAG or something like that? I have a spare ECM (e78) for my Cruze, and I need to program the VIN for my car after a botched flash. Problem is, I don't want to pay HP Tuners again for two credits to reflash my ecu for the same VIN in the same car. I have the hardware, but would I use something like WinOLS to change the VIN, or do you know of some GM specific software to do this? I am hoping you can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

There's nothing from GM but what I've shown here which is their Service Programming System (SPS). The Tech2 or alternatively the Windows emulator for it (Tech2Win) running with the GM MDI J2534 adapter for pre-2007 vehicles. When I made that comment I was thinking EFI Live, but not from personal experience. In most cases, since you mention a Cruze, it would be the GM MDI and using the TIS2Web SPS feature at www.acdelcotds.com (which is just the cloud version of the older PC DVD based TIS2000 I showed in this video) which is for 2007 and newer vehicles to change the PCM/VCM VIN. But there is that one situation where it could be a problem calibration version wise, and then you would have to go third party tooling but that is not a common situation.

TIS2000 was discontinued towards GM at the end of 2007. So as long as your vehicle is older than 2008 it's an inexpensive solution when paired with a Tech2 scan tool. But for any vehicle newer, it's not going to be of use. You'll have to subscribe to TIS2Web, the replacement on www.acdelcotds.com where GM charges you by VIN. If the vehicle is newer than say 2010 you'll also need to step up to an MDI tool instead of the Tech2 as well.

Hello, I have a authentic tech2 and tis2000 loaded on a tough book with a Bosch Mastertech J box. I have successfully programmed several modules (on vehicle ) on various gm vehicles . I have been trying to bench program instrument clusters without any luck . I’m trying th change programming on the microprocessor. I have a programmer to change the bin file on the eeprom. I have a simulator with a ecm , bcm and Vci. It keeps saying install new IPC. Any thoughts?

I haven't attempted to do an IPC on the bench myself. I presume you're trying to do SPS from within TIS2000 then for an IPC? Be sure you select the Off Board Programming Adapter (OBPA) and not Vehicle when prompted in TIS2000 would be all I could suggest (even if you don't actually have one of these ultra rare tools in the bench setup). In my own experience that selection was necessary to relax some of the SPS checks before I could program a PCM on the bench outside of an actual vehicle. I suspect that the Tech2 and SPS do some checks that require more than the PCM and BCM on the bus as I've had to select OBPA even with both to have any success.

That's a rather rare error, and I've not come across it myself. But I would suspect, since it's TIS2000, that it may have to deal with either the security dongle setup (USB or parallel port plug device) or the communications cable between the PC and the Tech2.

No, the PCM does not power the radio. The power is wired directly into the radio as part of its wiring harness. If neither the radio nor the interior lights have _any_ signs of power on, and there are no bad fuses, then that points to an interior wiring harness problem that will have to be diagnosed manually. May just be a bad ground due to corrosion but you have to trace the circuit out by hand to find it either way.

I have not, only classic GM brands. But you are on the right path, you have to have the Isuzu unique firmware version PCMCIA card plugged into the Tech2 itself, and Global TIS on the PC. The typical TIS2000 DVD is only for North American GM brands. If you search here on YT there's at least one video on how to install GlobalTIS for Isuzu vehicles. Typically when you buy a Tech2 Chinese clone you have to specify these so they include the right versions. There were different Tech2 firmware cards, and TIS DVDs for Saab, Isuzu, Holden, etc.

If I recall correctly, for 2002 you'll find the PCM inside the passenger side wheel well. Remove the plastic shield behind the strut area and you should see it.

These J body BCMs were not typically suitable to remanufacturing (the memory could only be written to once, and not reprogrammed using the typical GM scan tool at the dealership. So you would have had to buy a new BCM and have it programmed after installation into the vehicle. Or you would have to find a source where they have gone in and _virginized_ the memory to make an used one look new again. I'm not aware of anyone doing this for J-cars currently, so a new replacement from GM is probably the only option here.

i have a tech2 and need to clone a pcm of a 2004 cadi cts. i have captured the data of the pcm on the car. then when i go to the tis2000 it states in the bottom right corner of the tis program SAAB. now i generlly use the tech2 on my saab. not sure how to switch it to gm. or do i use this in pass through mode?

You need a different firmware card plugged into the base of the Tech2. The SaaB one is unique for that European model (typically version 148.00). For a Cadillac you need the NAO (North American Operations) one version 33.004. For TIS2000 you can use remote mode or pass thru, doesn't matter. @@fatguyfriday Not sure I'm following your _uninstall_ comment. You swapped the PCMCIA cards in the Tech2 and powered back up and it's not just showing the boot screen for the NAO 33.004 firmware? You might want to also check in TIS2000 that under the Configuration menu, Options that the tab for _Dealership_ is set to NAO as well.

@@fatguyfriday Ah got it. I haven't had to do SPS with a different PCMCIA card so never hit this. For just diagnostics it's all contained within the Tech2 itself. A little google fu and it appears Saab had a unique version of TIS (sometimes referenced as TIS2008-2 in forums) and is not the same as the TIS2000 we use for NAO on the USA vehicles. So yeah it does look like you have to uninstall the other to install the Cadillac compatible one. Gotta remember these programs were only used by GM dealers, and so a Saab dealer wouldn't typically ever see a Cadillac for warranty service. If you google around for TIS2008-2 Saab you'll see some posts around this.

GM occasionally finds bugs in the firmware of these modules, which can affect drivability, fuel economy, or compatibility with other modules on the vehicle. But the primary reason relating to the video, is you have to reprogram the PCM in order to change the embedded VIN so you can use a salvage yard one for a repair in a different vehicle than the donor.

It won't be the same as the Cardaq is not a Tech2 and is not compatible with the older GM TIS2000 software I showed here. But you should be able to use it with a ACDelco TIS2Web subscription as a J2534 device. You won't have the off board programming adapter option as that's not supported by J2534 tools, but you can still update the VIN using SPS.

If you're using a Tech2, it will not support many 2013 vehicles even with a CANdi module attached. If you're using a non-GM scan tool I wouldn't know as I don't use those. I'm not 100% sure as I only use the GM tooling. But the GM scan tools are going to remove any third party tunes as best I can recall, as those are not GM approved calibration files. I'd suggest you'll want to either let the GM tool reset the calibration and revise the VIN then separately re-apply the tune with the third party tooling. Or use a third party tool that will also support updating the VIN.

The Saturn models are _different_ in alot of ways and I've had viewers comment, for example, that they don't show up at all on TIS2Web applications. You'll want to just power on your Tech2 and _build the car_ and see what options you get given after picking 2008 and Saturn under diagnostics.

You would have to get TIS2000 when you buy a Chinese clone of the GM Tech2 scan tool (they're bundled together). It only runs on Windows 2000 or XP so you'll need a museum piece, or put it into a VM on Windows 10. You can usually find these on ebay ebay.to/2FLoIjI

I'd suggest doing the ECM/VCM/PCM (acronyms de jure) type module first as that's the primary controller in the vehicle, and then doing the BCM second. But I've never read that's a requirement, just seems like the more drama free path imo. If it's a brand new or OEM remanufactured BCM you should be able to do the setup with the Tech2 independently of the ECM. If it's an used BCM, well these older ones you can't update VIN or the mileage or odometer values (I did another video in this bench harness series on these BCM issues)

You have to reflash to get the correct VIN and powertrain configuration as the same PCM would be used across multiple vehicle configs.

The GM SPS software doesn't let you customize or make modifications (aka tuning) from how the vehicle was originally built. But it would cover a case where you pulled a donor PCM from a vehicle that had this valve and needed to put it on one that did not since the PCM part numbers are the same. What would control that is the VIN, and the TIS2000 database has all the VINs built to offer up a calibration that is correct. So you could reflash that donor PCM to one without the valve if the VIN called for it. Hope that helps, basically the net net is no you cannot delete the egr valve with SPS if it was original to the VIN. But you can account for it if it was original to the VIN when replacing the PCM.

No, I am not a business. But there are folks out there who will do mail in programming of modules. These particular GM PCMs are not repairable as there are no circuit schematics published for them. You'll have to replace it with either a new, remanufactured, or salvage yard unit.

So you need a power supply, an OEM Delco radio, a Tech 2 GM diagnostic PDA, a laptop, and a few wire adapters to program the engine computer yourself on a bench??? I was hoping to somehow wire my power supply to the engine computer’s power pins, jerry-rigging certain wires from the engine computer to a serial port on a laptop. And some software to program the computer??? Sounds expensive; but then again.... GM engineers are evil, and they only seek to take your money, by charging you an arm and a leg for a part; and then a separate charge for your nut-sack, for the VIN flash to the new computer!!!! I was able to use my Sega 32X on my Sega Mega-Drive/CD console by doing just that; because I couldn’t find the original video cable for the 32X system back in the day.
