2002 in Australian digital TV: DBA

Before on-demand streaming, before TiVo knew what you wanted, and before multichannels were allowed to show anything and high definition went mainstream …
Digital Broadcasting Australia existed to promote the digital transition before FreeTV formed FreeView. This was a difficult brief, when the benefits were all about picture quality and the widescreen transition a few years behind the UK … and maybe about multi-angle, and maybe-maybe about interactivity (MHP was even less successful than MHEG-5). Their greatest contribution was the DBA Forum, which became DTV Forum, for a time the only place to find real information about high definition broadcasting in Australia. RIP 2001-2015.

The truth was that "streaming" was already a known concept in the Australian public consciousness by 2000 and 2001, and the appetite for something exactly like Netflix existed 15 or 20 years before its official launch in 2015. This promotional push for "digital television" was not just attempting to ride the wave of anticipation with a hint of dishonesty, but also, the networks had no other choice; the analogue spectrum was already wildly inefficient and finally made way for 4G spectrum 5 years after the first deadline attempt. But the real momentum for the transition - which this video had intended to help - came from the TV manufacturers who simply made DVB tuners a standard feature around 2007, and made PAL tuners an optional feature around 2008.
