Late 90s early 2000s, unles your name was the New Jersey Devils, you weren't winning a cup if you came out of the East, period. Tampa in 2004 was the first Eastern Conference team other than the Devils to win a cup since the Rangers in 1994. It was Colorado, Detroit, and Dallas every single year out of the west, New Jersey was the only team that had enough star power to realistically compete with them and have a chance of winning 4 games.

I’ve never seen a series so closely contested through 6 games, that ends with an absolute blowout by one team in game 7. It’s crazy how Forsberg’s game 5 OT winner was the last goal Colorado scored in the series. They only managed 2 goals in the final 3 games and Detroit scored 10.

It's funny looking back at this series 20 years later with the Avalanche back in the Conference Final for the first time since. You don't know what you had until it's gone. We didn't know that this would be the last great Clash Of The Titans before all the big names started retiring or moving on. It truly was a special time when these two teams were the best in the game, at the height of their powers, that absolutely despised each other. There hasn't been anything like it ever since. Edward L I am a biased wings fan but if I had a top 3 it would be Sawchuck, Roy, Hasek. You can’t compare modern goalies to old school ones but let’s be honest. How much different would Hasek/Roy’s stats be if they were getting hit in the face with slap shots??? While more modern goalies might have more talent, goalies of old were true warriors.
@jleif7736 Жыл бұрын
I love Hasek, during this period of Hockey he was great.. But I hate to say this, but he would get absolutely lit up playing like he did back in 02, in 2023... For example watch this save attempt at 22:01 It was such a silly move lmfao, it effectively did nothing, and cost us the game, he had no reason to roll around like a fish, he could have hugged up to the post, and made the save that way. Even Roy, look how far out of the net he sits constantly, it's a known fact the further from the net you are, the easier it is to score. I just don't understand wtf goalies were doing back then. The only goalie who was a phenom in this time period, and remained relevant in the later years once the league developed was Brodeur.

Forsberg's OT goal In game 5 was one of the most crushing losses, in the arena. The Wings outplayed the Avs I. From an Av fan-2002 Wings are the #1 team I've ever seen to this day-#2 was '01 Colorado. Keep in mind,I didn't start following hockey closely,till the Avs came to Denver. But these pre cap teams would dominate anybody since. After the cap-impossible to assemble-let alone keep together-teams like these. Even Dallas or NJ of that era would roll to Cups today. Everybody dogs Roy for the statue of liberty..then game 7. But without him,& Forsberg, we don't get to game 6 in this series. Detroit was clearly the better team. Hell,we don't get out of 1st or 2nd round. Avs were a bit weaker-though still great in '02. Also exhausted from 3 straight games 7s that playoffs. But Detroit was unbelievable...a different animal than even their back to back Cup teams..they'd added like 3 more HOFers, & Hasek made them historically great. '01 Colorado vs '02 Detroit (assuming Forsberg healthy)-wouldve been the historic,epic matchup. To think from '95-'02,1 of these teams was in WCF,3 times both. 1 of them won the West, 6 of 8 times. (Avs beat Detroit 2nd round,then lost game 7 WCF at Dallas-in both '99,&'00) Amazing part,except when NJ won the East,& went 2-1 in Finals-in that span,every other time-WCF were the defacto SCF. East winner should've been given a bronze medal,& not bother to show up for the Finals. Everybody knew whoever won the West,would walk in the Finals,unless NJ was waiting. As more proof..Yzerman skates the Western Conference title trophy off like they won the Cup-because they had. Not saying Detroit didnt respect Carolina. But after game 7,(I kinda knew after game 6)we all knew the Wings had just won the Cup,& would go down among the greatest ever. Avs ended up 3-2 vs Detroit in playoff series,& made 6 WCF in 7 seasons...Wings only made 4 in those same 7 seasons. But that 3rd Cup trumped all that,& made Detroit the kings of that era (plus another Final in '95 does tack on)..unless it was NJ. Whatever-those 3 were the titans on their own level,& among the greatest of Alltime...with Dallas getting honorable mention...3 straight WCF,2 Prez trophies,I think,& other sustained reg season,& playoff success. Most importantly,knocking off Colorado twice in WCF game 7,playing in back to back Finals,& winning the only Cup-Detroit,Colorado,or NJ didnt win in 9 straight seasons.

Avs fans shouldn’t hate the redwings. We led to the avs success. We basically gave them Patrick Roy. The avs wouldn’t have been anywhere NEAR as good as they were without him. It probably wouldn’t have been a rivalry the wings would’ve destroyed the avs back then if they didn’t have Roy. Sure they had sakic, forsberg, Foote, Blake, and bourque, but the wings still would’ve found a way to win. The Avs ALWAYS had the advantage in goal until we got hasek and then we beat them and even beat them in 97 even without a top flight goaltender. It just shows really that the wings were always the better team in those years. Roy was the main reason the avs had a chance. Maybe that’s just me seeing it through redwing glasses, but the stuff I’m saying isn’t wrong. But at the end of the day, it made for great hockey and it was AWESOME. Too bad we’ll never see this again.
@jasonsmith5226 Жыл бұрын
@@pianotalent6437 I agree with some of that. I've said the same thing about Detroit shouldve eased up in that game in Montreal,if they had only known-lol. The Wings were always the deeper team,no doubt. Their 4th line made the difference in many important games. But to say you were always better is not reality. In 1996,it's arguable-Roy might have flat out been the difference,but goalie is part of the team. The reverse this year. A big part of TBs greatness is Vasilevsky,but he's part of who we have to beat,so it is what it is. 1999,& 2000-Avs ran through Detroit in 2nd round. In '99,Wings won the 1st 2 games here...Forsberg got thrown out early in game 1...but Colorado basically ran through them 4 straight-3 in Detroit. Then 4-1 in 2000. It was a pretty competitive-for 5 game series,but still only went 5. Go watch those games-I do occasionally-Detroit just didn't have the speed, especially on defense,to really keep up,during those couple seasons, especially the youth we had added. That Detroit team had gotten a bit old,while we added young guys like Drury,Hedjuk (#1,& #2 in the 1999 Calder)-then Tanguay. Wings still had some of the Larry Murphy's of the world....used to be a great player,but couldn't keep up by 1999-with teams like Colorado. Nobody serious would say the 1999 or 2000 Wings were better. But most people forget those playoff series,cuz they were 2nd round-& we lost to Dallas in WCFs. Then in 2001-we added Rob Blake,& another talented kid-Steven Reinprecht. That Wing team lost 4 straight to LA-no way they were as good as us. We beat the defending Cup Champs without Forsberg...a consensus top 5 player at the time. Because the teams in the post cap era,just can't compete with the pre cap era teams,in both depth,& star power,(Forsberg,& Federov often played on the 2nd line,even in their primes,& both won Hart trophies-that says it all) the 2001 Avs are the 2nd best team I've seen, since I started closely following the NHL in 1995. But that's not the end of the story...Ken Holland realized he still had a very good team,but they'd been passed by Colorado,& Dallas. So he went out,& had the most amazing off-season ever... something that could never happen today,cuz of the cap. And the Avs could never add an All star/HOFer every deadline today,like back then. But he had already added Chellios,like a year or 2 earlier...he gets Hull, Robataille,& Hasek (maybe I'm even forgetting somebody)-but also Datsyuk was like a rookie,& Zetterberg 2nd year,I think. We lost Bourque,& just weren't quite as good as 2001. That Detroit team is the best I've ever seen. I was actually very proud of Colorado for even taking you 7. And in that series,you are right-Detroit was much better. Everybody remembers the "statue of liberty" in game 6,& 7-0 in game 7...but I remember thinking "how on earth are we up 3-2 on this team?" Yes,Roy was a big part of the reason for sure. But that Av team also just ran out of gas. They barely made the WCFs...had to go 7 with LA,& SJ. That was also 4 straight WCFs,& 6 of 7. Detroit had lost 1st or 2nd round,3 straight yrs,& was more refreshed. No doubt that series ends earlier,if not for Roy's brilliance. But Forsbergs brilliance also was HUGE early in that series-basically through game 5. But no shame in that-that Wing team was stacked-by far the best team of all your Cup teams. As for hating Detroit,I stopped hating you for the most part by about 2004ish,& lost all dislike for you,when you went to the East. Similar to Nebraska,when them,& Colorado changed conferences. I have not a big of dislike for Detroit today...I just look back at that era as 2 amazing teams,with unbelievable talent,& a great rivalry. The outdoor game at Coors field,with the "old timers game"-that gave me total closure on that era. I don't root against Detroit at all today. You have a very bright future...& thanks for Darren Helm-lol.
@pianotalent6437 Жыл бұрын
That’s true. I gotta say though, we lost to LA with yzerman and shanny injured. And in 99 Osgood was hurt and we had to use a back up for most of the series. But once again, that may just be my bias speaking. In 2000 and 2001, you guys were without question better, I’ll say that, yes. And overall, they were even teams. Our yzerman was a right handed sakic, fedorov was the redwing forsberg, Lidstrom was the rob blake of our team. Shanny was the redwing mike keane (when you guys had him). The list goes on and on. And I to this day say that the avs were better than Dallas, they just couldn’t beat the Eagle. Both teams should’ve won more cups but Dallas was there too. But yeah the exact same, I don’t hate the avs anymore. I look back and watch those games with much respect to the avs. I actually have every playoff game from that era in a playlist. It’s entertaining and WAY better than anything we get today.

Even though he had lost a step by this point, it’s fun to see Larionov do his thing. I’d love to be on his line, just get open and he’ll find you.

The intensity is absolutely incredible! Btw. who is the greatest goalie of all time? The one that has 2 shutouts or the one that allows 21 goals in the series...

I'm pretty sure that was Mike Dunham in disquise as Roy in game 7.

The sheer amount of talent on display in this series, like seriously how many hall of famers, (and surely future hall of famer in Datsyuk's case) were involved in this series?

As great as the Wings were at puck possession this whole series, you always knew all it would take is one mistake and the Avs could blow the door down.

I like McCarty when in doubt shoot it worked in game 1 and many other times. 2 great teams with high firepower great goalies resulting in a great series. “What did u think would happen?”😅

Yes, the GOAT wanted to win at all costs. And when everyone hacked a little extra on him, he made sure to hack back.

Say what you want, but Dominik Hašek saved the Wings in this series. Down 3 games to 2, his game 6 performance was spectacular! He won that game for the Wings and forced the game 7. How ironic that Patrick Roy ended his career in game 7 the same way he ended his Montreal career. From a severe beating by the Wings.
