I've done a few of these, this is a real pain to debug because once the ECU see's an issue positioning the actuator it won't send a 12v PWM to the coil. So, you go along thinking you may have a circuit or driver issue but that's its fail safe state, I think when you go to actuate the solenoid with Techstream it says something like "Cannot perform this operation" . These usually seize under the crimped shell of the coil, they get dust and dirt in there and it can't move the rod of the actuator up into the electromagnet. It's interesting, every one I've ever done was a Bank 2, which is nice because its the easiest to get to. I hate, hate, hate changing these without any definitive fail data but replacing it always solved it. You can try swapping it with Bank 1 to see if it moves with the change, but Bank 1 is tough to get to. BTW, on the top engine cover the Toyota emblem is the third hold down fastener, you're supposed to turn the emblem to disengage it.

I'm going to edit my comment, and I'm doing this from memory (which isn't very good) but I'm thinking you can't swap these, maybe it was the connector was different or something kept you from being able to do that.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I do in fact think they are different on these. Stlll a good testing technique regardless. Thanks for the heads up on the fail safe situation, I'm definitely going to keep it in mind!

I have also seen quite a few of these suckers stuck, most of them come in stuck on causing rough running at least from what I have seen.
@richardcranium58397 жыл бұрын
a couple of thoughts- 1) its a sollenoid so you may be able to detect a magnetic field when activated albeit weak. 2) swap bank 1 with bank 2 to see if it follows since the rear bank is working.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
richard cranium, thats a solid testing technique for sure! Swaptronics ftw!
@CKRslotcars5 жыл бұрын
Can’t swap. Solenoids are left and right handed. He should have applied battery voltage to it to check function. Also there is a filter screen accessed on the end of the cylinder head.

Hello..Can you explain why the brakes at weird when having this code?..It happened to me and it driving me nuts as to the connection.. Unless its the ECM that causing a reaction? HELP..I've fixed by replacing solenoid but my little brain news to know what the brakes have to do with it..

We see a few Toyota's in the shop... this will come in handy! Off to part 2. Happy New Year & all the best to you & yours!!!!

Be wary of resistance checks on solenoids. The ohm's check on an injector can be normal and still not function. Using a pressure drop test with power to the injector will give a result. Maybe a power probe to the solenoid might give an indication ? Looking forward to part 2. All the best for the New Year.

My 02 Lexus ES300 with 3.0v6 is having hesitation issues if I floor it from a idle or stomp it to pass on Hwy. Check engine light gives code p1350 which is camshaft position sensor, could it be fixed by replacing it or do I have a symptom of another issue

Great video Joe! On my way to part 2!
@JVerschueren7 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm missing the obvious here, but, while you had the solenoid out, why didn't you just jumper it to the battery to check whether it still moved? -I mean, resistance checks out, ok, but that doesn't prevent it from being physically stuck.

You're absolutely right, we're getting there in part 2!

Depends on the engine. Is it this engine? If so, then no not likely.

How involved can the repair get beyond the solenoids/filters and blowing out thephasers, if it doesn't fix the problem? I'm looking at a avalon being sold with the vvt disconnected. Stumbles violently under load
@RJC3po7 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe, Nice Video. Because the solenoid resistance is close to what you might expect in a fuel injector, would it not be possible to use a fuel injector pulse tester to verify the mechanical operation while the solenoid is out of the car? I'd imagine that you could even scope the current waveform for a closer look…. Just a thought, could be over kill but, I've never seen anyone do that before and it might be interesting.... Let me know what you think.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I think you totally could, but just as easily could just jumper it. As for the current measurement, I wish I would have. We could probably see clear indications of mechanical movement on a current waveform of this solenoid. Another missed opportunity 😔.

You know what works great on these babies ? A fuel injector tester/pulser. But of course adapt the leads to be fused with a 2amp fuse to prevent the pulser from letting the smoke out . If you are lucky enough to find a pulser that handles the low resistance injectors like the kentmoore one they could handle the solenoid for a 1 second grounding as well
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Keith DeFazio, I certainly like that idea, I've done it on some lower amperage solenoid before like purge valves to catch a leak, but id be a little scared to try my OTC one on anything much bigger lol.

I have a 2000. It has 285000 miles, and drives like a dream. I had to replace the vvt solenoids. The filter screen is on the driver side of the bank, on the side. It is held by a 14 mm bolt. In this car you are working on, engine oil has been changed regularly, as the vvt solenoids is very clean. But the screen may be blocked and hence the problem. If it is, change both of them on bank 1 and 2. They are cheap. Do not use after market because the screen is not tight. A new vvt should be about 50 to 100 bucks.

the verus is missing important pids actual vs desired degrees! secondly you can apply power and ground to the solenoid with jumper wires and the engine should run rough. maybe try backprobing both solenoids see a square wave control. but your a good technician man! you look like your the go to man at your shop
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Im not sure if it's the Verus or just the supported data PID's from the vehicle. As for jumping the solenoid stay tuned for part 2!

My 02 Lexus es300 is having a hesitation issues when I floor it or pass someone. Code is p1350 which is camshaft position sensor, could that seriously be my issue? So I have a 2005 Avalon with 215,xxx miles on it, just drove from Virginia to Chicago. I already knew that I had existing transmission issues but it wasn't that bad and at most would stall when put into gear (automatic transmission). Getting on the highway after a gas stop it was stuck in first gear up to 70 miles an hour, yes I know I'm stupid not paying attention to it, had my music way too loud. Anyway after redlining for probably 10 seconds I heard a grinding noise near the timing chain area and now it idles like it has a bad cylinder. V6 3.5. Most people guess it's a cam issue but I've had a couple people say they think I messed up a rod, it sounds like a rod knock at idle but it drives full power and sounds relatively normal while at 750+ rpms. Anyone have any clue? Popped a code for camshaft exhaust timing over retarded and one for the previously existing o2 sensor, so probably just a cam phaser gear or something cam related just not sure

Triangle Diagnostics the speed of the datastream on these older Toyota's is inherent to the vehicle. If you labscope the data packets you'll see why. Your scan tool will be the packets with the slightly raised ground. You'll notice how little a chance the scantool gets a chance to request in the network traffic 😉
