I wouldn't say they were overrated. K-State just had a great team in 2003. Their four losses were by a combined 22 points and every game they lost came down to the final possession. Plus this KSU team won 11 games and pushed Ohio State to the limit in the 2004 Fiesta Bowl.

It happened in 2001, where Nebraska got destroyed against Colorado yet they played in the national championship against the Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes destroyed the Cornhuskers 37-14.
