Three years later and this vid is still working its magic. Had I not viewed it and saw Tim's systematic way of approaching the task ("start on this corner and work our way around, tackling things as we come to 'em"), I would have never gotten the confidence to do this myself. He shows it is not the daunting task it appears to be at first glance, not if you approach it as he shows in this video. Can't say "thank you" enough for this excellent DIY video by Tim. Big thumbs up from me. (And from the wife -- it was her car.)

This video is the very best explanation of exactly what is required to get to the spark plugs for replacement on a Mitsubishi Montero 3.5 engine. It also makes it very compelling to remove the entire drivetrain and replace it with some good ol' GM LS V8 power that you can actually work on without needing a PHD in vehicle mechanical skills

An old video but well done (except the missing steps due to dead battery). To the poster, thanks for the video. I've spun wrenches on a lot of cars, but mostly older ones, so this was still intimidating despite my experience. To viewers, he shows a lot of good mechanic-ing habits and tricks I use. Laying out parts as you remove them, putting bolts back in once you remove brackets etc.. One tip I would add, for things like the plenum where you have different length bolts, is to roughly draw the shape of the part on a scrap piece of cardboard and use a screwdriver to poke holes about where the bolts are, then push the bolts through the cardboard to make a holder that has the bolts in their respective positions.
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, THANKS! That is a good tip because I have seen a few other guys do that, and it is extremely important to put those bolts in the right place. Thank you for your input and advice!

That was a great comment, thank you very much Dancing Loon. We try to show everything, we hate it when we try to search for a repair and they replace a part within 5 minutes. That's not very helpful, So we try to record our repairs in a way that anyone can do it.

You said something very beautiful when you got to the extra part of removing the side bracket to get to the valve cover bolts. To motivate yourself you said the customer would be happy and have no oil leaks. I did it all but gave up at that point because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get the back over valve cover bolt back in. I had 2 more questions. I recently had the alternator replaced due to a oil leak, but the level on the dipstick showed full. I looked around to see where it might be coming out from and come to find out it looks to be from the right valve cover, is it a common problem with these engines?

Torque spec for the valve cover bolts (the 10mm ones) is 3.4 ft/lbs. Mitsubishi refers to it as the "rocker cover" in their repair manuals. Also please don't over torque these. It will bend the metal cover outward and you'll have an even bigger leak. My local dealership charged me $270 for a new cover.

This is such a detailed video. I had never done this before but after this video? Valve Cover leaking issue now resolved! Without taking it to another "messy" mechanic who left every single nut loose on the right side (passenger) which caused the oil to keep leaking down onto my alternator and starter. I kept replacing starters & alternators thinking I needed a new motor. Because I had already paid a shop to change the valve cover gaskets. I'm a girl and I'm definitely subscribed. The only thing I have to do now is replace the oil pump for a Montero Sport 2002. Do you have a video for that? If not, can you post the instructions please?
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cris for that great comment. It seems that is a common issue with these trucks, oil leaking onto the alternator. It went okay! I over torqued one cover and had to purchase a new one. Local dealer had one for $108. I also purchased an inch/pounds torque wrench after learning that 10 in/pds is not 10 ft/pounds. Fixed the leak though! I bought 2 90mm bolts and cut the head off to use as markers for reinstalling the intake. They held the gasket in place and helped line up the intake during re-installation. Other than the valve cover, it was uneventful. I went slow, and arranged all bolts and brackets in the order of removal. Thanks Astral, I appreciate your videos

My 2001 Montero has had an idle issue for 2 years. Intermittently, it will idle a 200 rpms and hesitate. Other than the low idle, the car runs great. I've replaced the IAC, EGR system, plugs, wires, all vacuum lines, MDP, PCV, hoses, seals, etc. All factory Mitsubishi parts. Same issue. Cleaned the Throttle valve and all ports around the butterfly. Tough issue, but it's our 3rd vehicle.

Very good video in general. I just did my valve gaskets and I used silicone thanks to the advice of Autozone and my engine is leaking oil. I think this is the second video where its mentioned that you shouldn't use silicone. On the part of putting the covers back you didn't mention how tightly are those bolts supposed to be. Do you have any references? i have a 2001 and a 2003 Mitsubishi Monteros. I love these cars but now they are getting older and I need to be able to get things done myself as I had already paid a mechanic to do this job but didn't do it right so I though I should be able to do a better job. Also, I am thinking that my engine covers..

@@truthonly1467 Do a Google search for "Firing order on a 2003 Montero". You should find diagrams on letting you know where each wire goes.

hey brother i just finished putting on new alternator , starter , spark plugs , battery , both gaskets for valve cover , and other gaskets ... it took a while .. but i having trouble figuring out what hoses go to the right valve cover with the oil cap .. does the hose that’s connects to the left valve cover that’s sorta “U” shaped connect both valve covers ? i have the one hose that connects to the air intake but there’s another hoses i misplaced and can’t figure out what it is ?

I have a question, I hope you can get back to me, I've gotten All the way to where you easily shook the plenum off, I'm confident that I have removed everything up to that point but it seems to be stuck, I feel it might be the gasket, it's heavily missfiring in cylinder 5, 1, and 3, I was planning on changing the spark plugs and cables, and the plenum gasket, any advice on prying it loose??
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos4 жыл бұрын
Something has to be holding it. Make sure the bolts are out on the back side. There may be a bracket that is bolted to the plenum and to the head.

thank you for the vid, i do have a problem though, i followed your video taking the bolts out but the valve cover still will not come out. any idea on what i could've missed?
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos8 жыл бұрын
Make sure all the bolts are out, then you may want to get a long screwdriver or pry bar and SLOWLY pry up on the cover. Hope this helps.

just watched, great info. Im about to do head gaskets on the same vehicle, is it pretty much same procedure then do the valves? anything I should know before diving in?
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, looks like you are about to get your hands really dirty. Just be sure of the timing marks in case it's an interference engine, and no matter what you hear, always replace the head bolts if they are available. Also, DO NOT use engine tech gaskets, they will be cheap (cost wise) but are very cheaply made. If you need any advice, let us know
@RealiveSoul8 жыл бұрын
Astral Auto Repairs it's the exact same engine as in the video. do I have to mess with the cams?
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos8 жыл бұрын
If you're going to do head gaskets, yes, unless you can get to the head bolts without removing them, but if you are about to do head gaskets, that part will be really easy. just be sure to mark the cam caps(they should already be marked) and put them back in the same place.
@RealiveSoul8 жыл бұрын
Astral Auto Repairs cool did you replace the head bolts? is it a must?
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos8 жыл бұрын
No, we only did the valve cover gaskets, but if you are doing the head gaskets, you should replace the head bolts if they are available.

are you aware if the 3.0L found in the 2000 Montero sport requires valve adjustments? the one I'm working with is making valvetrain noises. I like the idea of laying out the parts. a table would work perfectly if you don't have a cargo ramp!
@OnlineAutoRepairVideos7 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron ___, the valves in the 3.0 and 3.5 are not adjustable, so you might have a bad lifter. Thanks for the comment on the parts, it makes putting jobs back together, very easy.
@leojbourne5 жыл бұрын
The 3.0L has valve lash adapters. Google around for info. To try and flush, rev slowly over 15 secs to 3,000 rpm, then ease off. Repeat a few dozen times. To clean you have to take out the VLA, bleed air out using a press and clean with diesel. Google to find out how. I added Sea Foam to the oil to try and clean the VLA in place. It did work after a while, but may have shortened the life of my engine seals, which gave out at about 170k miles and it was an expensive repair.
