I really agree, the S-Type has come of age. Personally I think it's a rare example of a car where the face-lift versions actually look better than the earlier ones - especially the improved interior.

Right it's a great rare classic cars these days. Mutch underrated. But here in Germany the prices for good examples with the 3.0 and 4.2 litre motor begin to grow up. The prices grow arround 20 - 30 procent in Germany with in one year. It's a head turner, especialy outside the UK.

I’ve never driven one but I’ve always liked these based on looks alone. The modern Jaguars leave me cold as they look so similar to everything else. Shockingly when these were new I would see some of them cruising around south Florida with padded vinyl roofs, 2 tone paint and white wall tires. I recently came across a v6 manual in a junk yard. I was stunned. I can’t imagine they sold many of those on this side of the pond!

In 1996 at the 60th Anniversary, which took place at Brown's Lane , the cars in the delegates car park were a sight to behold - might not be overdescribed as the 8th Wonder of the Jaguar World. The TVR Boys and Girls were there too ( Blackpool/ Fleetwood?). with their brightly colored sporty cars.😮 The then new XJ 6 was on display - firmly locked, with a few Heavies in place to prevent any over enthusiastic enthusiasts getting their paws on it , or even into it. Heaven forfend 🙏. 😢

These are seriously under-rated cars. I ordered one new in 1998, but changed my mind and cancelled. There was quite a long waiting list, so it did excite people at the time. In 2010 I bought a 2003 3.0 litre car, for only £2,600, and it was absolutely wonderful! Very quick when engine revved hard, as it had 240bhp. The ride is comfortable, and it seems to glide along, with a wonderfully fluid feel that I've not experienced in rival BMW or Mercs. Future classics I think. Thanks for the video review, very interesting. Looks are always in the eyes of the beholder, but I agree with you that S-types look better now than they used to when new.

This was indeed a platform share with the Lincoln LS, designed by Coventry kid Gerry McGovern (MGF) who went on to head the Lincoln Division itself. The Jaguar design Centre at Whitley is about 2 miles from the Rover design center at Canley, both are alongside the A45 in Coventry. The Rover 75 was the last car designed at Canley which was redeveloped and is now a Sainsbury's car park. Great video as always. 🚘🛣🚦

I Still get comments on how good it looks, it drives like a dream, i worked in Dublin recently and took it up the Mountains with 3 work colleagues and it was the best driving experience i ever had. iv'e had it 4 years now with no major mechanical problems just the usual things with wear and tear. i pay £12;50 a day to use it in London because of ULEZ but not once have i considered changing vehicle i love it so much.

Having had 3 I know a thing or two about them. I have a 2.7 version at the moment (Diesel, 2005). Check Sills as they rot like crazy under the sills, cam belts, and Gearbox service which a lot of owners miss. Its not a sealed box so factor in 4-500 quid if there is no history of gearbox being serviced. Make sure you have a GOOD battery on them, otherwise the electrics go haywire! The EPB will stick on etc.

great lively commentary, big ups. I absolutely must draw your attention to the one thing that everyone says about the engine though...its being 'Ford-sourced' etcetc. The V6 was originally a Porsche design; the ladder block, as per the 928's V8. It then passed to Cosworth. At which point the S Type project, under Ford. The whole of the valvetrain is Jaguar; including the variable intake manifold and variable valve timing, which is still as trick as they come without forced induction. Truly a high-bred motor, le pur sang as close as we get these days. Yes, I've got an S Type; 3.0 ltr, manual. The looks, the drive...well, say no more.....though that over used word, 'iconic', does spring to mind.

No mention of the J Gate. An automatic box with the facility to go into manual mode. It's all very well if you are hurling it round Brands Hatch it will probably stay in 5 or 6 th however if you are staying within suburban speed limits, the gearbox will want to go into 5or6 and lower the revs to about 1500. This is it being slightly lazy. So for a quicker response flip it across to 4 th. J Gate/ Jaguar Gate. 😅

My Dad bought a brand new 3.0SE in 2001 because he had always promised himself a Jag. It was a lovely car but towards the end it cost an absolutely fortune to try & keep it on the road. The Autobox had to be rebuilt, a new torque converter, the diff had to be changed, new fuel tank are just some of the things I remember. He spent around 6 or 7 grand on it in the last couple years but gave up & scrapped it in 2011 after the rust took hold. It did have 160000 miles on the clock to fair but I don’t think it was built all that well. Great video as always 👍🏻

The X202 S-Type, released for 2002 , was heavily reengineered from the Ford DEW platform and has virtually nothing interchangable with the Lincoln LS - although many parts are shared with most other contemporary Jaguars e.g. suspension control arms introduced on S-Type were shared by X350 XJ and X150 XK models. This means that the 2002-onwards S-Type feels (and indeed fundamentally is) nothing like the Lincoln LS. It's just an evolutionary artifact used to criticise the S-Type by people who have never driven an X202. The X202 is a wonderfully balanced chassis and is very capable. Indeed it's still the underpinnings of the spectacularly capable XFR-S - which I also owned. The only dynamic advantage the E39 BMW 5 series had over the S-Type R was the option of a manual gearbox. Even then not everyone would agree that was an advantage in an executive performance saloon. Interior wise, you may enjoy the S-Type's leather e.g. on the back of the front seats so the rear passengers see leather rather than plastic seatbacks like the 5-series had resembling, which looks more Mk.4 Ford Escort than it does luxury saloon.

I think e39 had limited slip that STR didn't have. Also m5 suspension was stiffer as it was faster around track. I however think s type is superior to bmw on road comfort / performance and also reliability is suprsingly superior on my s type vs my bmw e92 coupe that broke too often.

The Presenter didn't seem to understand the door handle procedure when opening the drivers door from inside. There is a top smaller lever which needs to be operated before you can operate the bigger lower lever to actually open the door. Also this is part of the security system.which ensures a person with I'll intent can't get in. Also when the car moves off it automatically locks - and makes a reassuring locking noise. Also there are 3 positions for the ignition key.

The earlier models dash and rear lights take styling cues from the Spitfire. The round bits in the rear lights match the RAF circle on the Spitfire and the dashboard vents are designed to look like the Spitfire wings. It's because the car was made at the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory where the Spitfire was made. I think you got a commemorative book with the first ones sold.

The styling has always been a strong suit if the S-Type. So elegant yet strong elements that bring it to life. As an aside, the rear side marker lights would be red on a North American example.

I once thought of getting one of these, I am old enough to have had the original, but didn’t really want a Jag shaped Mondeo. Currently have an XJ351 V6 Portfolio. Despite moans from those who don’t like the departure from’classic XJ’ I can’t help but say that the 351 is a beautifully sculptured car. How many speakers? 20 actually. no slouch either - 298bhp, I can’t really find anything (apart from the large touch screen and on or two switches), find any plastic. It is all walnut wood and leather finish - even the roof lining is suede. Jaguar? You can’t mistake it for anything else. Saab? Yes I had a Saab 2.3 litre 9000 in 1993 - I can vouch for your comment regarding those, miles ahead of anything BMW or Mercedes back then.

If you have a good un then zeibart the underside to keep things corrsion free. Expect about 19-26 mpg sometimes more on a good run.

Correction on 0-60. If it’s not the 2.5 petrol V6. In real life they do 0-100 kmh in about 7 seconds tested and 7,9 in the brochure. 0-60 is 7.5 on the 2003 auto 3.0 according to Jaguar. Probably around 6,6-6,7 0-60 real world testing. They were not far off in terms of 0-60 compared to the 4.0.

I was fortunate to own a 2004 4.2 (naturally aspirated) S Type for the past four years (sadly, redundancy, lockdown, etc, meant it had to go about two months ago). It was a wonderful car, the best car I've ever owned (yes, better than its Merc C, E Class amd ML predecessors, good as they were). The V8 performance was outstanding and I never felt any regret for not buying the supercharged 'R' model. It was exceptionally comfortable and wafted along like nothing I've ever had before, and with the added enjoyment of being able to lift up its skirts and with its 6.3 seconds to 60mph, leave lesser machines (like BMWs!) in the dust. Rust can be a problem but I bought carefully and maintained well. I'd have another in a heartbeat if and when the world returns to normal.

Regarding that retro look being cool these days, its true. My 2000 Merc e-class (when it's shined up) really gets looks. The car you're driving has much the same style as mine. I'm hooked on the 4 round light front end style.

I got a beautiful facelift example fully loaded 6 speed auto (believe it or not completely rot free including sills) for the princely sum of £300 for my elderly father as my work colleague went and bought a new Jaguar and they offered him nothing on a trade in and he said the first person with £300 could have the big cat. Ours was completely reliable but it did get the odd error code due to only getting used once a week to go to the shops as once the battery gets a bit low it can throw the odd engine management light but wish he never sold it as it was a great waft wagon.

Surprisingly, considering your following of the restoration of the Minder Capri, you missed out another type of Jaguar/Daimler owner... Arfur Daley... Our cousins across the pond have never been able to say Jaguar properly, so that story is very much incorrect, but it is fun...

Yes the V6 is a Ford Duratec engine though it does have some Jaguar parts like the Cylinder heads, which are Jaguar.

One vehicle of Jaguar that I never had the pleasure of riding in. XJ, X-Type, yes, but never this. Those window switches look right out of a Taurus, imported from Detroit. The rest seems pure Jaguar.

Re. the bank robber demographic: didn't they just nick them from the aforementioned middle-management? A pre-facelift 3.0 manual is weirdly appealing, despite the quasi-retro styling issues, because it has a proper gearbox & handbrake!

I had a British racing green 3.0 sport manual pre-face lift and can confirm it was quite good and quick. The ergonomics are off though, especially compared to an XJ. Has a kind of a trans-Atlantic feel, not an old Jag feel.

Its a great rare classic cars these days. Mutch underrated. But here in Germany the prices for good examples with the 3.0 and 4.2 litre motor begin to grow up. The prices grow arround 20 - 30 procent in Germany with in one year. It's a head turner, especialy outside the UK.

@@paulpalmtree9295 Thank you very mutch Paul. Hope we can enjoy these fine british classic Jaguar cars for many years in the future. I have an S-Types 3.0 litre from 2006 since two years, bought it from an 87 years old gentleman near Hamburg. I have had BMW and Mercedes, but the Jaguar is another world for me as a car enthusiastic. I don't want to give it away for the rest of my live. Best regards from Krefeld Germany.

@@alberteisenmann1023 wie ist die Haltbarkeit Ihres Jaguars im Vergleich zu den Mercedes und BMWs die Sie schon hatten?
@alberteisenmann1023

Also normale Verschleißteile.

Great review. Though the diesel is not a 2.5 Twin Turbo it's a 2.7 twin turbo. The diesel is the same 2.7 V6 twin turbo diesel that was used in the Citroen C6 and it was used in Land Rovers too just with a single turbo and some engine parts were slightly different. I've heared that in Land Rovers they can have crankshaft issues (though Land Rover specialists say it can be prevented.) Crankshaft issues for the 2.7 diesel on the Jaguars and Citroens are less rare but they can still happen. The 2.7 V6 diesel was replaced by a 3.0 V6 variation of the engine (the S-Type never got the 3.0 diesel) which could be found on newer Jaguars and Land Rovers. The V6 diesel is replaced now with a 3.0 Inline 6 diesel.
