I have never owned a Dodge truck so knew nothing about them . Just bought an 04 Durango Slt with the 5.7 liter hemi. The dealer told me it was an St so that is the vehicle I researched before I agreed to buy it and the dealer told me 3 different times that it got 16 mpg city and 22 highway. Now I am reading the Slt gets 10 city and 16 highway. I bought it to tow at least 3000 pounds and handle a roof top carrier. The Dodge dealership said I couldn't do that either. With the bad mpg probably a good thing I can't tow what I want because I can barley afford to put gas in it now . Adding a load who knows how far the mpg would drop.I am changing out the plugs hoping to see a little better gas mileage. I was wanting to have a textured skin put on at least the fenders , back hatch and the inside of the bottom of the doors. I also want to remove all the seats but the drivers seat . I am assuming removing the seats will improve the mpg but I can't even guess by how much since no one can tell me how much the seats actually weigh. Moneys tight so I do not want to pay for skin to handle the rust problem if I can't significantly improve the mpg. Any suggestions other than buy another vehicle which I can not afford to do would be appreciated.

I know this is a very late response, but there's not much you can do save on gas with that thirsty rig. Removing unused seats would leave a very minimal impact on mpgs (I suspect maybe a +2 gain at most). That 5.7l V8 (powering an SUV) is just thirsty no matter what. My wife and I have towed ~4k lbs. when we moved cross country to our home in AZ. We averaged 15 mpg @ 60-ish mph (vs. 18 without a trailer @ probably 70-ish mph). Your fuel mileage loss with towing will be noticeable, but shouldnt be significant. Most I can say beyond already stated, 60-70 mph on the highway should be it's peak efficiency, or within reason. If you live in a big city and everything is close by, don't drive the big ol beast if you don't need it, city driving kills gas mileage. I hope this helps atleast a little bit. :)

Honestly, a 19 year old rig like this, with fairly low mileage and clean as it is, should run you no more than ~$4k. That said, the current state of inflation has put it (among all other vehicles) at a ridiculous price. My wife and I got ours in the limited trim, 3 years ago (5.7l V8, 156k(?) miles) for $5,600 (after tt+l). She was a bit overpriced, but not by much, and the powertrain is solid with plenty of grunt (at the expense of 13 mpg mixed 😅). I will say keep an eye on the suspension, but everything else is golden. Just my $0.02. :)
