Thanks for posting this video. I'm having trouble with my heater and I've flushed the radiator which helped a little but the cabin air really only gets hot when I rev the engine allot. I'm hoping the heater core doesn't need to be replaced so I'll do the thermostat first since the truck has a 195K miles and it's probably overdo to be replaced anyways.

Do you add a little bit of coolant to the reservoir and then start the truck? Or start the truck first and then add coolant?
@GWPHomestead2 жыл бұрын
The reservoir has a cold fill line on it so filling it to that point would be good. I used a spill-proof burping funnel to fill mine to make sure any trapped air bubbles could get out and that requires adding some coolant while the engine is running.

My temp runs a little high. Light right at the half way mark on the gauge. But it does go down. Its just a little high for my liking. Im guessing the thermostat is causing that too?

So the temp gage in my 05 goes from cold to the middle within 3 min. Now I'm getting cool rather than heat...no check engine light on. Not sure if I should replace the thermostat or flush system? Any thoughts??

How can you tell it was stuck open? Thanks for the video
@GWPHomestead2 жыл бұрын
The thermostat controls the flow of coolant between the engine and the radiator. They are designed to open at a certain set temperature; once the engine reaches that temp the stat opens and allows coolant to flow thru the radiator so that temperature is maintained. By looking at my temp gauge on my dash as well as my digital gauge on the programmer I could see that the temp was low, meaning that coolant was moving thru the radiator before it was supposed to. It’s a better problem than being stuck closed (engine overheating) but it still needed to be corrected. Thanks for watching!
@ddewaukee31052 жыл бұрын
@@GWPHomestead thanks for the reply much appreciated, did you also had problems with your heat inside the cabin not blowing out enough hot air? Do you remember how many degrees F⁰ was your coolant? Thanks again
@GWPHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I've heard that cabin heat can be a problem with a stuck open thermostat but it wasn't something that I ran into, at least not to a level that I really noticed. I think my coolant was running about 160degF when it should be 195. Haven't had any problems since I made the repair.

I'm having a issue with a 2004 f150 4.6 I change my termostat to a 160° now my engine light came on saying my engine is running to cold BS I also have a 2008 f150 4.6 that I did the same thing and no light at all and is running beautiful so what's can be the problem?
@GWPHomestead2 жыл бұрын
160° may be too low, I think the Motorcraft part from the factory is a 190°. Not sure why it would be fine in one but not the other but I would think you’d need a higher temp stat.

@GWPHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I bought it from Power Hungry Performance back in 2014. I like it fine but it turns out I haven’t done as much to this truck as I thought I was gonna when I bought it so I don’t think I’m maximizing my use of the programmer. If nothing else the ability to read trouble codes and monitor temperatures, RPM, etc is very nice.

It could be a problem with the thermostat but there’s really no way for me to know what the cause is. Are you getting any check engine or trouble code lights on the dash?

@garreth6293 жыл бұрын
I imagine you've already solved the problem by now. Having said that it could be, but their is enough other potential things in the cooling system to cause the same issue. Honestly if there are no obvious coolant leaks and enough coolant in the system its probably what I'd try first as its relatively cheap and easy to do yourself. Honestly another thing I'd check is that the fans on the radiator working correctly. I know on my 2001 f150 it has a mechanical fan driven by the serpentine belt. I'm not sure if these later trucks had electric fans or mechanical as well. If they're electric they don't usually run constantly. Sometimes only once the vehicle is up to temp. They're also maybe be a second fan for the ac system so dont confuse additional fans. If the fans appear to be working properly and replacing the thermostat it could also be the water pump or a radiator issue. These are the most likely culprits. Potentially they're could be other issues but they're more likely to cause other noticable issues. The thermostat is generally where I'd start if I'm not experiencing other problems. Plus on most vehicles it's cheap and easy. Actually even if I know its another cooling issue I tend to change it because its cheap insurance I likely won't have to change it soon after.

A 180 thermostat will work for 5.4 motors that won't hold enough oil pressure at higher temperatures .
@MalleusDei2755 ай бұрын
After replacing rocker/ rollers .. I'll try with the original thermostat temperatures. Then move on to my timing chain ... Oil pressure is more important than temperatures for this ...
