Great thorough explanation! I'm working on a 2005 AMG and it has the same emissions system. The owner says he smells a lot of fuel inside the car occasionally, and the codes are P0456 & P2075-002. I've been using my smoke machine and I haven't found the problem yet. This video is very helpful though.

I never found a smoke leak, so I replaced the under-hood purge valve on a hunch (they always go bad). The check engine light turned off & the car passed emissions. The owner says he still smells fuel inside the car occasionally though. It turns out he paid to have performance exhaust manifolds installed, and the cylinder on the right, closest to the firewall isn't sealing at the manifold. I'm fairly certain the fuel smell is the exhaust coming out of that leak & getting sucked right into the HVAC inlet right behind the right front shock tower in the firewall. Hopefully there aren't any more issues that need diagnosing! We will see!

Research has become such an important step with today's cars. I miss the days when a car's systems were all in one book. But we all know that's not possible any longer. Now we need scanners, scopes and subscriptions to keep up to date on the repairs. Nice use of a Power Probe.

Thank you my friend. This was my first Euro car that was easy to work on. Will do more. Cheers

Very interesting video, what good timing. I have a 2004 Mercedes E500. I have owned it since new. It recently threw a P0455 (large leak) code. I replace the fuel cap and it did not re-code in about 75 miles of driving. It did this before about 3 years ago. A fuel cap stripped it then as well. Mercedes looked at it the first time and told me I needed a new canister and vent valve, a whopping 550.00 dollars. I declined and did a Google search and several people reported a fuel cap was usually the problem. I want to get a smoke machine but sure can't afford anything like a SnapOn for myself. I have seen a couple on eBay and Amazon for around $100 to $150. They don't have the flow gauge but I could always add one if necessary . I might just get one of them. ,thanks again. Tom

Those smoke machines should work. Flow meters are expensive I would try pressure gauge up to 1-3 PSI but make sure that smoke machine is seal.

Another good one Ramon . Enjoyed very similar to most EVAPORATE systems. 👍

Thanks for the video. Did you remove the smoke machine and re-attach the purge valve before doing the leak down test with the scanner?

Great Video Ramon, don't you just love that Powerprobe?

DiagnoseDan Thank you my friend. Power probe is great toll in my tool box. Something else I like from power probe is extension cord. I can connect it straight to battery and use it with my test light that my modified by adding banana adapter. Now I don't have to struggle to find good ground on rusty cars.👍👍

12:30 fuel tank not locked all the way can cause a leak. causing error code telling you it might be the purge sensor or shut off valve if this doesnt solve it could be bad sensors or actual leak from gas tank or evap tank leak.
