In this presentation, Brathovde gives an overview of the Library of Congress's collections of over 18,000 Native American images, most of which were created by non-Indians. She then provides some tips on research procedures and identifies some overlooked topics of investigation and examines the exotic appeal of Native Americans.
Jennifer Brathovde (Sisseton-Wahpeton) is a reference librarian in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. She has written print and web-based guides to the Library of Congress’ holdings of photographs and films documenting American Indian life, and has presented research on American Indian photography at conferences across the United States. She holds a MLS from the University of Washington.
