2004 Silverado Heater Core Blowout and Cab Air Filter Install

Cutting a hole in the heater box to blow out the plugged heater core. This hole is where the cab air filter would have been installed on these series of trucks. This did not completely fix the issue, but the vent airflow was significantly increased.

Great tip! I used a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. A plastic knife might be better, but I didn't want to burn myself in a tight spot. Took about 10 minutes to cut it out. I also removed the blower resistor to give better access.

That resistor on the bottom of the airbox is the main source of fan slow down. Replace it if you haven't.

The fan speed didn’t seem to be slowed at all. Just by blowing out the heater core/evaporator the airflow was increased significantly

If the blend door actuator isn't working properly, it will also restrick airflow from coming out of the vents. It's located under the steering wheel near the gas pedal.

Yes, this is true. But there would be airflow when cold or hot but not both. In my case, I had little airflow all the time

...and it's a pita to replace. All of my actuators were intermittent and had to be replaced

It was “easier” because there was less maintenance to do.. but then that made it harder because there wasn’t just a filter to change

Dodge did the same thing . My friends 2007 or 2008 ram is the same. No air filter. And his evaporator or whatever is clogged to shit. My truck is good but I came to this video because I never changed it. But I guess I may not have one.

So we're getting a really good blower but no heat. Does the heating core provide the heat? New to this but want fix on my own. Thx

Yes, the heater core uses the engine heat to warm the passenger compartment. Sometimes there can be a shut off valve on one of the lines to block the coolant flow

2 filters go there, in that empty space I have a 2005 Silverado it has two filters that go there

That could be the factory option. The aftermarket options were all showing 1 filter for me
