I've been using my 2004 Volvo XC70 D5 for six months as my daily driver. Let me show you all the improvements I have made to it, and see how I have got on with the car
Bluetooth kit I used www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07VYTXR3... (though it currently seems out of stock, sadly)

These have aged so well I think and still look pretty modern now. The thing I like about Volvos and also Saabs is that they're sort of classless and there are generally no stereotypes attached to them.
@18_rabbit
@18_rabbit Жыл бұрын
i love them too but they're not really classless to ppl who have to own/maintain them over very high miles. And stereotypes are often attached, in a couple ways, e.g. very cautious ppl, or very aggresive drivers, even, in some cases. I did see a dad aggresively driving this model once, he cut out into traffic to overtake me on my superbike, so yeah...(and with his darlings in the back no less)

Glad to see you enjoying your tank! I’m positive once you refresh the front struts/springs/end links it’ll feel like a new car. That was the most significant area of improvement when I refreshed my front suspension in my XC70 2.5T at 230k miles (currently sitting at around 265k). I saw the rear sway bar already mentioned. One thing I would highly, highly recommend is Delrin subframe bushings if you can get ahold of them on your side of the pond. They TRANSFORMED the way my XC felt on the road. They’re kind of an in-between of OEM rubber bushings and Polyurethane bushings. Almost as soft and quiet as OEM bushings, but much better road feel and lean-in. Makes it feel like it’s not lifted, while still being a lifted wagon! No rush, but I’m sure engine mounts will be coming up for you soon and that’s an excellent time to throw them in.

I have an 2004 too. The handling is greatly improved with new control arms and steering components, also, that weight and degree of movement takes it's toll on the front shocks and springs. Whilst good rear setup, control arm bushings also helps. Also, its likely yours has the self levelling rear suspension, likely the 940's they do expire and are pricey to replace something like £650 each comes to mind, but handling is severely impaired if they are leaking. I avoid all Pirelli tyres as they make the steering heavy and unpredictable, with excessive load on the steering system. Good, Continental winter and summer tyres, give predictable balanced handling across a wide range of speeds, conditions and loadings, more expensive than some but worthwhile. A second set of wheels, makes swapping to winter tyres much easier and cheaper. I competely agree about comfort, I have had mine since nearly new and driven long journeys in great comfort for all. The D5 engine with the Auto box makes for reasuirng progress even fully laden up steep motorways.

I fancy one of these as a winter hack. Im moving to a rural location shortly and it's narrow country lanes everywhere..One of these would be perfect...Built like a tank, reliable, really practical and comfy..and in my eyes, they still look really cool.

New suspension components and your good looking tires will greatly help the handling of your tank. Mine can corner comfortably at 30 to 35 mph. I autocross British sports cars like my 79 mgb roadster. So comfortable for me may not be for others. And of course these things are tanks in the snow. I love them!

The P2 Volvos are such incredibly unique modern cars. My father just replaced his 2001 V70 T5 which he snapped the cambelt on at 245k miles with another 2001 V70 T5 with only 70k! It's brilliant to experience such a lovely example of the species, though his new one has a lower spec stereo that doesn't sound quite as nice but at least plays my cassettes 😂 I daily a 2012 P3/EUCD XC70 with the Bridgend T6 and I completely know what you mean about the 'wallowyness' of this type of car; my XC70 also has a peculiar fidgeting over bumps that can upset the steering a bit which doesn't happen in either the older V70 or my mom's gen1 XC60, so I wonder if certain handling elements are compromised since the XC70 is a modification on the base V70 instead of a ground-up CUV, if you will.

I have quite the nugget of an XC70 as my first car (V70 XC actually, whatever). Rare manual+petrol option, 2001, 372 000 km on the clock, got it at 330k. In 2 years I've raced it, off-roaded it, crashed it, customized it, upgraded it, lived in it and last but not least fixed it myself countless times. I still smile every time I look back at it after parking. Yes it has it's weird quirks with electronics, but it has never left me stranded - it always gets to point B in absolute comfort. A couple of tips: the pre facelift steering pump reservoir is garbage. They bulge and leak, swap it out with a 2005+ one. Also, I highly suggest getting VIDA + DiCE tool for your car, it will be a life saver for when you inevitably run into volvo problems. P.S. I really envy your interior, it's immaculate compared to mine!

I do have a soft spot for the older Volvos. You've done fairly well with that one. I love the P2 shape and P3 shape XC70; comfort unsurpassed. I had the first of the next gen XC70's on a '57 plate which sort of solved one or two of the niggles with the previous gen; the heated seats had a third mode and were hotter and rear room improved; but ultimately they can get to a point where so much needs doing on them it can become hard economically to justify it but it is great you are keeping them going. I added about 43k to a 140k car in less than two years on mine and took it like a champ - really was a beater to get up during covid to see mum before she passed - without it she would have been isolated in Scotland. Now onto a '14 plate xc90 which I love but in all honesty the package of the XC70 is far more drivable and parkable.

Just bled all 4 brake calipers which were really rusty and the rear ones appeared that they have never been bled. I twisted off the brake bleeder on the front passenger side but than drilled it out and used an easy out to remove the old bleeder. new tactic that worked really good is i used a small impact drill with a socket adapter and soaked the rest with penetrating oil and gave it a bit of heat from the torch and than used the light duty impact drill and it came out without a problem. just needs a bit of gentle agitation and loosens right up. maybe if i tried the first one the same way i wouldn't of had a problem.

NIce update! Agree about heated seats: like a/c, they are not all created equal. In some cars, the heating elements are part of the seat cover, and can be replaced, if you can find the cover. In others, they are part of the cushion itself (which can also be changed). Hard to say if the questionable performance is due to age, or due to a weak design to begin with. About the suspension: did you try to do a “bump test”, to see if the suspension settles quickly? Wondering how to ascertain whether the shock absorber is faulty, or if the springs have weakened with all that rust. 🤔

It looks like you have the new front brake pads incorrectly fitted, that silver clip you see through the wheel should push into the calliper piston on the INNER side of the Calliper . Regarding the heated seats they are designed to take to cold out of the seat rather to heat them up well above ambient and feel hot. There are 3 heat levels you can select with the dealer diagnostic tools.
@MorselsAndMotors
@MorselsAndMotors 10 ай бұрын
I promise you I haven’t put the pads the wrong way round: the inner pad has the clips for the piston as you say, which I’ve clicked firmly into place. But the outer pads on this set also comes with the slightly slimmer clips which are visible. I think these pads must fit a couple of different cars, one of which needs the extra clips on the outside

our xc70 handles really good on the road, and i beat the shit out of ours. take it around the corners hard ect. even kept up with some low powered bmw's maybe yours got a bad swaybar on top of everything you said. and the heated seats can be programmed for eu specs so they get hotter.

Its kind of odd but having a couple of decades of company cars on a 3 year cycle I am free of that. I know you and other youtubers need content but for me approaching 3 years with a 10yo Dacia Ruster - sorry Duster its fine. Doing a 320 mile trip tomorrow but I have full confidence - basic low tech 90's Renault stuff so no traction control stability control and the ride is rougher than a Scenic but I'll take 50mpg all day

I'm in love with my xc70 2004 like you! It's got a little over 300k km now! I'm very interested to know more about your phone mount. I've been looking for a good solution for long. Could you tell me more? Cheers from Germany.

I’m afraid a fiend gave it to me so I don’t know where it came from. But it’s just one that fits into the cd slot, so if you search eBay I’m sure there will be some for sale. Next time I’m in the car I’ll try to take a note of the brand

I have a 2003 V70 XC and the only issue I have is after a long drive (sometimes even a short drive) gear jumping down as if the car is being hit from the back, like a strong jolt. Any advice will be appreciated.

This has to do with faulty valve body in the gear box. Gear box oil change must be done every 37500miles regardless if it is stated sealed for life. When gear box oil changes are not done, debris in oil get clogged in the valve body and cause jerky gear changes specially when it id cold. I would recommend a full oil change with the filter. If the symptoms still persist, getting the a valve body thoroughly inspected by a specialist is recommended, hope this helps

I have the 2014 version of this car and I agree the handling around bends is not great - even taking motorway curves at speed feels a little bit insecure - And I also think it's because of the raised suspension and the fact the the XC70 is really a standard V70 with AWD bolted on as an after-thought - Volvo's more 'pure', dedicated SUVs (XC40+XC60+XC90) all handle much better than the XC70 as does the FWD V70 - But, all that said it's a brilliant car in every other respect and we don't buy Volvos to be sporty - they excel in other ways!!! (IMHO )

At 0:38 you have the inside brake pad on the outside. That part is supposed to be inside the brake piston. It probably is fine but not the way it should look.
@MorselsAndMotors

I don’t, I promise. Both inner and outer pads in the kit had clips, the inner one is correctly in the piston. I’m guessing this kit is for multiple models, one of which has a fitting on the outer pad too.

At what mileage should you start worrying about the automatic gearbox when buying a used xc70?
@timmychase2097
@timmychase2097 Жыл бұрын
no specific mileage... if it has been taken care of (fluid change every once in a while) it will be good. I recently bought one with 110k miles and tranny was very rough on the highway, I did 3 fluid changes over a couple months and problem solved.

Its a shame they ceased production on such a lovely model. I had a 2004 one but the gearbox died. Then I got the newer version. No comparison. If it works dont fix it Mr Volvo. All is forgiven, bring back the older versions. They were superb. And please, Mr Ford, keep your hands off the Swedish technology and mind your own business and your rattley tin cans.

Dude it Is a heavy vehicle, lifted from the ground quite a lot and you have 16" ofc It will be wobbly in the corners. Even my S60 2003 with 16" is wobbly and he is super low to the ground. That is normal for Volvo, they are not sport cars for cornering, they are long distance cruisers mate. Thats aswell why you find those bulletproof 2.4i petrol and in your case Disel engines, with or without turbine. Those cars are amazing and not so expensive to maintain, no electronical bullshit aswell. It gonna outlast any new car. I had few 2016+ cars and none of them was so reliable as the old Volvo and that is self proven fact.

One year update video? I am interested in buying a petrol XC70 from 2015-2016, (My location is Romania, so left side driving position) for maximum 15000 euros, looking for AWD/4x4, but as efficient of an engine i i can get for this vehicle. We are impressed with all the safety and off-road package this car brings, and it would work great for my first and only ICE vehicle, after the market stabilizes, i will also buy an electric vehicle. (i am sad with tesla removing features when they aren't ready for alternatives, and i am waiting for other manufacturers to make a similar vehicle to Tesla Model Y, but better fitted for Off-Road and for snow/ice, with active air suspension, and a respectable maximum ride height to protect the battery underneath.) (Loving the Volvo EX30, but way too small for me, and the EX 90 is way too expensive and inefficient, so i will wait for a longer EX30 , maybe EX60? similar air resistance and efficiency, but way better cargo space, bigger battery, and maybe 7 seats.)
