TOTP's formula is live singing to recorded backing tracks at least in later episodes... that is the show... in jem's case cause she uses about eight layers of vocals (especially in the chorus) to make up for her predominantly weak singing style, the chorus is for the majority playback. If you listen carefully you can hear her doing the low harmony I think in the first chorus live.
