This video (2 of 2) shows the opening up of a 2005 R50 Mini Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox which suffered some damage to the crown wheel.
The gearbox was recently replaced due to 'noises' and odd behaviour.
It shows the steps to open up the gearbox and a look inside to see what other damage occurred.
I am not an expert so please don't crucify me if I use the wrong terminology - this is simply a video to show the innards of the gearbox and a few hints to get there.
Please comment if there are any corrections to make.

Cool video. It's easier to pry open and less chances of something falling out if you make the bell housing facing up. That way you aren't working against gravity (all the heavy bits are in the other half).

Gearbox a little easier to split than the "Midland" gearbox? Just changed the input bearing on a midland and it a pain in the arse to do. What was wrong with making a bearing that could be extracted from the outside of the gearbox?!

No sorry I don't. At least you can buy parts for the Midland box - unlike the Getrag where you have to buy the whole unit. Try this video - My R65 Midlands 5 speed rebuild

With the 5 speed Getrag, did you use a Haynes manual for the specs when rebuilding or did you have access to a Getrag service manual ?

Because parts for the Getrag boxes are unavailable I had to buy a whole new gearbox. So the old one (in the videos) was junk and I just opened it up to see what the cause of my issues was - no manual.

Hello friend, my 2002 minicooper ran out of reverse, I already changed the change cables and it's the same, what do you think the problem is?

I’d try disconnecting the cables and trying to operate by hand to see if you can perhaps ‘feel’ what is happening. Note that the forward gear levers must be in neutral position before reverse will slip in. But trying it out by hand rather than cables will tell you more. Check the video where I operate the gears. Failing that there could be internal damage but hope not. Good luck

Is there a gasket between the two halves and if so what sort? Do they often leak as I’m trying to diagnose an oil leak and Idk if it’s the engine above or the transmission??

No there isn’t any gasket. Just a very thin smear of red silicone (high temp) on the machined surfaces.

When you removed your transmission did you pull the engine or did you drop the sub frame

My mechanic yanked the gearbox out and as far as I know he dropped the sub frame...he hates working on these cars.

hello. i have a noise on 2 speed. which disappears after the 2500 revolutions . howling almost inaudible in the engine braking only at a set rate . the cold howling can be heard more clearly . Tell me, what could it be?

+Марк Ильин Not entirely sure what it could be but sounds similar to what I had. For me, the rattling noise was noticeable at around 60kph when using very little throttle (on & off throttle lightly). Then at exactly 100kph (not sure what rpm) there was a harmonic howl noise - not loud but noticeable. This noise happened whether the car was hot or cold. Reverse gear also sounded pretty horrible (metal knocking noise). I thought initially it might have been the CV joints. To start with I'd recommend you inspect the crown wheel as this is easy to do. I think it is the oil drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox you remove (sorry I don't have the gearbox anymore to check) where you can then see the edge of the crown wheel once the oil has drained. Look for metal fragments in the oil too. Hoist/jack the car up, put it in 1st gear and spin the front wheels slowly (you may need to spin both wheels together to drive the crown wheel). Do this slowly so you can inspect each tooth as it rotates past the hole. Use a flashlight so you can see the full width of each helix tooth as a chip may be on the back side. Sorry buddy, I got rid of it a long time ago. The crown wheel was missing teeth anyway.
