It's amazing how many things in my life have solid valves, older honda accords, subarus, motorcycles. I always learned it was a 1960s thing but not necessarily so. The ninja zx6 is the hardest you have to pull the cams and measure the shims and replace them with the correct size to change your gap and then replace the cams and if you are wrong you get to do it all over again. And there isn't much room under the tank between the frame rails to work.
@ThePracticalMechanic Жыл бұрын
The dual overhead cam Subarus are just as you mentioned. Measure clearance, pull camshaft, measure shim, order new shim and pray it correct since they are about $15-20 each.

I did notice a lot of Subaru's while driving though Colorado. I guess it makes sense to own one there with the extreme winters you all have sometimes. Nice work Chad.

Thank you so much for Good explanation about the Subaru engine. I nearly made the mistake on valve clearance setting. I have done it well after watching your video.

I feel like I am right there with you, measuring every valve clearance, torquing every fastener, checking and double-checking each step before proceeding to the next.

0:26 No, you don't. The left cover has a rubber plug peep hole for doing timing; furthermore, the timing marks aren't what you need to see., the arrows are. THAT is why the cover needs removed. It has nothing to do with timing marks.
@ThePracticalMechanic Жыл бұрын
The arrows indicate top dead center. The mark I show are for setting up the timing belt. The timing belt is installed with all the pistons mid way through the travel so you don’t risk valve to piston contact.

From around 3.58 to around 6.12 in the video you can easily compare the exhaust rollers on the #2 & #4 rocker arms,-- the #2 is shiny and clean and the #4 has that blue hue to it,-- I was just reviewing what i had been looking at and give it a timeframe when it was easy to view and compare the two rocker arm camshaft rollers,-- yep ,-- its turning blue,--- still might last for a while though,--

May I ask what happened to this forester? I was so invested in this series, and was curious as to the outcome.

Is every time the engine/arrow is in those 4 points the compression TDC never exhaust?? Want to be sure I’m not netting valves on the exhaust TDC.

old timer told me one time the way to adjust if its .010 adjust then try a.011 if it will go not tight enough if the .011 goes needs to be tighter.

Will valves out-of spec cause random engine misfires? Ive done all electric stuff wires plugs coil etc.
@ThePracticalMechanic6 ай бұрын
If they are too tight the car may misfire at idle.

Would they tick while not under load if their to loose?
@ThePracticalMechanic2 жыл бұрын
They will generally tick all the time if the valves are loose but the noise is more noticeable at idle. If you have noise only when cold it could be piston slap. The piston will expand slightly as it warms up and the noise will quiet down.

Can this service be done in car? If so. Approx cost? Thx
@ThePracticalMechanic Жыл бұрын
Yes it can and normally is performed in vehicle. Because it’s labor intensive and the valve cover gaskets should be replaced this will likely cost $400-600. If it’s a dual overhead cam engine or turbo engine the price will go up a lot.
