Slide the belt off of the water pump rather than the alternator first. The water pump pulley is smooth with no lip and the smooth back side of the belt rests on it. It's a lot easier than fighting it over the lip and grooves on the alternator pulley. 😊

Thanks for posting this vid. It was very helpful to my son and me. We just swapped out the alternator on his ‘05 Rav4. Same 2.4 engine and same location for the alternator and belt tensioner bolt . Same bolt sizes too. Only minor differences with the wiring clips but the way you dealt with them helped set a great example. I was even able to buy the same specific tools you bought (got ‘em at Harbor Freight). My advice to anyone wanting to attempt this, remove the old unit (take pictures of the orientation of any removable brackets before removing them) and take it (with) to the parts store. Make them pull the new unit out of the box (before you purchase it) to compare it to the old unit. Make sure EVERYTHING matches up. We didn’t, and ended up buying the wrong thing the first time around. Also, wear mechanics gloves. Your hands will thank you. Cheers!

I wish you showed specifically you taking the serpentine belt off. This is what I am struggling with, and I needed the same exact set up as you (breaker bar and extender) but I still couldn’t do it. I know I could’ve changed it successfully if I saw that part. Thanks for this video

My first DiY on the alternator old Camry. I just used a 12” ratchet socket 19mm 6 hex no special tool. Off was easy putting the belt back was a 2 person job and even have to use duckduckdad suggestion slip back on by the flat pulley by a helper. Took me around 2hrs 😂 with that tight spot. Thanks to you KhanXo❤ I wouldn’t have dare to do it without watching yr video. ❤

Great video. I know nothing about cars, but I'm handy and figure things out. Also, not afraid to try anything...that helps..haha. Your video was the second one I watched when I was trying to determine the loud hum that developed in my daughter's ride. My part came in today (new $99) and I tackled the job tonight. Hardest thing was getting the belt back on around the alternator. Finally got that, hooked everything back, cranked it up, and the loud hum was gone. I was unsure it WAS the alternator until the battery died while waiting a few days for the part. Thank you very much for your help!!!

@@khan_xo It's a good place for cheap tools I have shopped there for years. I was a little frustrated today I bought a metric socket set and when I needed a 12mm I found out they jumped over that size and went from 11mm to 13mm. 12mm is one of the most common sizes. Figure that one out. I guess China doesn't use the 12mm size, lol.

Best to remove and replace the belt @ the water pump pulley and not the alternator itself.
@btomas225

You could just remove the upper motor mount to gain clearance to use your socket and serpentine bar....The mount comes off relatively easy and the lower mount will still support the engine. Oh, and what you called the "ground wire", the cable that goes to the stud on top with the rubber boot, is actually the battery cable...

No you dont I did this with a 3/8 ratchet and a short socket the tool just has enough leverage to take tension off the belt without making enough torque weight to round off the bolt there
@steveflorman9922
@steveflorman9922 5 жыл бұрын
No it's not. All he had to do was rotate the ratchet handle 60 degrees (it's a hex head bolt) and he'd have had plenty of room to take off tension without hitting the frame. Nice work, though; that flat bar tool looks handy!

@@jnutz4871 Why are so many people rounding off this bolt or breaking it altogether? bad design from Toyota or people using wrong tools or both? i mean i can see the up loader using the wrong socket but it seems not everyone would do the same identical thing, heck most people have normal 5 pointers,applying too much force maybe?

The serpentine belt removal even with the same kit you bought was still very difficult to remove the serpentine belt and even harder to install serpentine belt. There has to be a better Serpentine Belt Removal Tool. But still very informative video. Question was anything wrong with your tensioner that made Serpentine Removal difficult b/c there doesn't seem to be enough slack to belt when tensioner is fully engaged down. Any comment would be appreciated.
@khan_xo
@khan_xo Жыл бұрын
The tensioner was fine, I assume that little bit of slack given when fully down is just enough to get it off and purposely designed that way to keep those moving parts held tightly together.

I had the exact same problem with the star-shaped 19mm socket set. THEY WILL STRIP THE BOLT. It has a HEX shaped 19mm socket and it hasn’t failed to grip it yet.

I don't know if you did it or not. But once the car starts, immediately disconnect the jumper cables because you don't gain anything by keeping them connected. Once the dead car starts, the alternator takes over. Jumping cables are just that. Jumping cables.

brs rafal for me, the alternator started to make a loud whine before it gave out completely. @khan_xo
@khan_xo 6 жыл бұрын
So after you have removed the belt and electrical cables, all you should have left to remove is one top bolt that is 14mm and a bottom one that is 12mm. They are pretty long and hold the alternator to the rest of the engine. Make sure you are getting those particular bolts and not ones that are nearby (you don't have to loosen the bolt at the center of the pulley). Once those are off, the alternator will still be stuck on. You'll have to kind of pry it out with a flathead or something similar and then wiggle it back and forth while pulling it toward you. I do this starting at 9:20 in the video.

1Frosty Bricks3 same as taking it off. Have the belt loosely in place and then release the tensioner. While the tension is released, slip the belt back on to the pulley of the alternator. Once it’s on, slowly let the tensioner move back into position. Kinda hard to do with only 2 hands though lol, helps if you can have someone hold the release on the tensioner while you put the belt on.

The problem is not you used a 12 point socket. The problem is you used Pittsburg Harbor Freight cheapo sockets. The best compromise for quality vs price is SK. But yeah 6 point is less likely to strip a nut/bolt
