Slide the belt off of the water pump rather than the alternator first. The water pump pulley is smooth with no lip and the smooth back side of the belt rests on it. It's a lot easier than fighting it over the lip and grooves on the alternator pulley. 😊

Thanks for posting this vid. It was very helpful to my son and me. We just swapped out the alternator on his ‘05 Rav4. Same 2.4 engine and same location for the alternator and belt tensioner bolt . Same bolt sizes too. Only minor differences with the wiring clips but the way you dealt with them helped set a great example. I was even able to buy the same specific tools you bought (got ‘em at Harbor Freight). My advice to anyone wanting to attempt this, remove the old unit (take pictures of the orientation of any removable brackets before removing them) and take it (with) to the parts store. Make them pull the new unit out of the box (before you purchase it) to compare it to the old unit. Make sure EVERYTHING matches up. We didn’t, and ended up buying the wrong thing the first time around. Also, wear mechanics gloves. Your hands will thank you. Cheers!

Your video was the second one I watched when I was trying to determine the loud hum that developed in my daughter's ride. My part came in today (new $99) and I tackled the job tonight. Hardest thing was getting the belt back on around the alternator. Finally got that, hooked everything back, cranked it up, and the loud hum was gone. You could just remove the upper motor mount to gain clearance to use your socket and serpentine bar....The mount comes off relatively easy and the lower mount will still support the engine. Any comment would be appreciated.

The tensioner was fine, I assume that little bit of slack given when fully down is just enough to get it off and purposely designed that way to keep those moving parts held tightly together.

@khan_xo6 жыл бұрын
So after you have removed the belt and electrical cables, all you should have left to remove is one top bolt that is 14mm and a bottom one that is 12mm. They are pretty long and hold the alternator to the rest of the engine. Make sure you are getting those particular bolts and not ones that are nearby (you don't have to loosen the bolt at the center of the pulley). Once those are off, the alternator will still be stuck on. You'll have to kind of pry it out with a flathead or something similar and then wiggle it back and forth while pulling it toward you. I do this starting at 9:20 in the video.
