Thanks for taking the time to post this. A couple of tips, and summation of other's comments into this one comment: - Before starting, remove the brake fluid filler cap in the engine compartment and surround/cover it with a clean, dry shop rag. That will make compressing those calipers easier and also prevent you from putting unwanted pressure into the brake fluid system from the caliper compression. - A big $5 C-clamp from Harbor Freight will take the place of that tool, especially when you use one of the worn pads as a cover over the piston to prevent the clamp from damaging it when you turn it the clamp. Also, if you put the rotating part of the clamp on the outside of the caliper, rather than on the piston, it won't twist the boot like that. If the piston does twist (or if it's supposed to by design of the caliper) be sure and clean/lube up that boot so it turns easily and doesn't tear (as others have mentioned). - Absolutely should consider replacing rotors at same time. Cost is small and you've got it all opened up already for the brakes. Wear tolerances are very small on rotors these days, so they likely won't have much life left on them anyway. Best of luck on your projects!

Thanks, RG! I found your video really very clear and helpful! I watched three or four professional mechanics' videos and yours was more clear on several points. I appreciate it!

Thank you for the clear video. It'll be helpful to many people. As a mechanic, I have one recommendation. Be sure the rubber dust boot is free of the caliper piston as you're screwing it back in with the special tool. Notice in this video how the boot gets twisted badly. If it hasn't torn during that procedure then it'll likely fail prematurely due to the stress of it being twisted like that.

You can buy this tool with a butt load of adapters on Amazon for $17.99. I know that sounds like a low quality tool but it worked perfectly for me. I just got finished putting rear brake pads on my wife’s Ford Fusion. Amazon has the kit with both right and left hand threaded clamps for $21.99.

Maybe it's your first time, but changing brake pads and calliper may seem easy, but they hold your life, so you gotta be careful when you work on it. You pushed the piston in, but you did not massage its rubber. Rubber should fill the piston nicely, thus prevent get dirts. Otherwise piston won't the do its job well in the future. You spin the rubber over and over, then you replaced the brake pad without fixing the rubber. WATCH @ 5:00. Cheers!

please tell folks that come here looking for instruction that they NEED that tool to push in the caliper. REPEAT you NEED that tool to push the caliper. just using a c-clamp won't get you anywhere, the caliper needs to turned WHILE compressed!!!! PHUQ Ford for that bull. PEACE.

attention. NEED special tool push the caliper.. NEED special tool push the caliper..

Yeah try not using that tool in the rust belt to try with a pair of needle nose , good luck.
@patricknegro50713 жыл бұрын
@@brandonamond3124 yeah you probably don’t need that tool, “Carnal”, just some pliers.The boot should be cleaned and not effected when pushing the piston back.You also didn’t put Anti-seize on the shim, or on the contact points.Silicone is good for the caliper blots and they should be cleaned.You should also open the brake fluid bleeder valve.But it was an excellent video.I mean I forget everything!Very good work, “Orale ”

Just as a suggestion as you spin the caliper tool stop every turn and fix the boot and clean with brake cleaner once its clean and with no grease it will spin and depress smoothly without wrinkling it just a suggestion

No Need for the special tool. Place a c-clamp on it like usual and turn it with a pair of channel locks. Works like a champ.
@tg81502 жыл бұрын
Hey Einstein, that doesn’t work on these rear brakes. Piston has to be twisted back into caliper. Do the job before criticizing others. 🙄

@@tg8150 you know if it’s the same for the front calipers?

Spray some penetrating oil on the pistons rubber boots before using your compressing tool to make sure the boot doesn't twist and tear.

Get a big C-clamp instead of the "special" tool. Easier to handle.
@tg81502 жыл бұрын
C-clamp will NOT work in this application. The piston HAS to be twisted back into the caliper.

With all do respect man but your not going to replace the rotor? Also not even grease the caliper slides with brake grease????? For me i always replace my rotors, grease my slides, and inspect my hardware every time i do a side job, my own car, or a customers car at work (Mr.Tire). Good video tho ill hand it to ya and not bad for your first time. But dont be surprised if in 5,000 miles you get a warped rotor, uneven pad wear, or worse and get that anoying brake squeek every time you let off the brake pedal.

Rotor will get replaced next, time I do my brakes again. On the calipers they move smoothly, but I know...should've grease them.

To compress the piston, remove one of the used brake pad, place it against the piston and use a C clamp to hold the brake pad in place and compress the piston. No need for the tool you have!
@tg81502 жыл бұрын
Lol. Not on these rear brakes. It requires twisting back into caliper. Maybe do one and see for yourself before commenting. 🤷🏻♂️
