2006-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL x164 liftgate/tailgate/hatch won't close.

This video describes the procedures to diagnose and replace a faulty liftgate latch. The procedures for panel removal are explained in the reinstallation portion. I try to provide tutorials of the average things I do from time to time. Hopefully it will be useful to some.

There should be an override for all Mercedes trunks. I don't want the electronic close

It's been cold outside for the last couple of days and today my wife called from the store reporting the rear hatch not wanting to close. Also the SOS teleAid was flashing and she had to cancel it a couple of times. We don't have a subscription anyway. She manually closed it and drove home but I noticed when she got here it wasn't latched all the way. This is a keyless go car so tried using the key fob to open and close it but nothing. I did some googling and found some info about how teleAid uses the rear handle to signal them for a remote unlock by having you hold the handle in for 20 seconds or so. Sure enough I looked and the handle was stuck in the upward position as if someone was holding it. When it is stuck it completely turns off the auto open and close of the hatch and sets of the SOS. It seemed road grime got in the handle pivot point and jammed it. I flushed the sides out with some contact cleaner and put a little moly grease on a thin feeler gauge and kind of slipped it in the sides to lube it up a little. It. Works great again. I know this is a different problem from the video but thought I'd share anyway in case someone was looking.

Thank you for sharing that scenario. That's a perfect example of another cause to this issue. Also glad about the simplicity of the correction.
