Anyone who watches this, you should never use a torque wrench for removing bolts....only to torque bolts to spec. Doing this can throw off the calibaration.

Well done video. Replaced both of mine on an 06 Avalon and your video showed me exactly what I was up against. Thank you for posting this!

Thank you for posting this. Going to do this tomorrow on a 2007 Avalon Limited. Hope my hubs hammer out as easily as yours did.

Thank you! I did both rears today and it was easy other than the bearings were a beast to knock out.

Never did see how the parking brake shoes were put on. Toyota did such a great job engineering it exactly behind the wheel hub so you can’t get fingers in there.

When I replaced wheel hub bearing, I first mounted the backing plate (2 bolts) without the new hub, then assembled the parking brake, removed the 2 bolts, then re-bolted (4 bolts) the new wheel hub with the assembled parking brake. This way the wheel hub is not blocking anything.

Really try to get that sensor un clipped first, the wire could snap when the hub drops

There has GOT to be a better way to remove the hub from the e-brake assembly than this.

This was a Good video. Does anybody know the size of the bolts that hold the hub?

You did not say what the torque should be on the bolts.

Torque isn't important on the backs as there is no axle nut. Just tighten the 4 bolts really tight.

I’m doing this on my 2013 Avalon. The passenger side bearing / hub came out fairly easily. The driver side however won’t budge. I am destroying the whole wheel / brake assembly trying to beat this thing out. Hammer, punches, air chisel, oxy torch. Will not budge. Unreal.

That is my concern about doing this. I thought might buy a new backing plate (parking brake) - but they want over $350 for the plate per wheel - for a $15 piece of metal.

@@mjkirk12 I had to bite the bullet and purchase one, I think i paid 200 and some for it. Car was out of commission for like a week, luckily I dont fully depend on the car daily. I even removed the whole assembly and attempted using the hydraulic press at work, not enough material available for a stable base to press it out. The assembly ended up in the scrap bit. The new wheel hub installed into the new housing freely, in fact there was a little play between the housing and the wheel hub. Crappy design, and as you stated a total price gouge on the new part.

Finally did this last weekend. Another KZbin video used long threaded bolts on the wheel hub to push out of the backing plate. First wheel hub took me 2 hours, the other side about 90 minutes - with a lunch break. This included cleaning and reassembly of the parking brake. Now rides nice and quiet again. No hammering, no hydraulic press needed - just gentle persuasion. ;-) However, I think the front bearings and/or CV drive shafts will likely fail next. My method: 1) remove hub + backing plate with parking assembly. Disconnect the ABS wire first!! I reversed the brake rotor, bolted to the hub to make separation from the car easier - rubber mallet. 2) Remove parking brake for access to backing plate - needed cleaning anyway. 3) Clean rust from back side around the hub/plate mating area, spray rust penetrating oil. 4) Using long 4" threaded 3/8" dia. bolt, washer and nut, tighten thru a large hole on hub (near wheel studs) pressing against the backing plate. Tighten just enough to separate the hub from plate near a mounting hole - 1-2 mm is enough. Make sure the bolt is pressing on the thicker metal of the backing plate - perpendicular (90 degrees) not at an angle. 5) Loosen bolt, rotate hub to opposite side and repeat 4) 6) Continue around the wheel (steps 4 & 5) at various points until separation. Spray oil in the new gaps to aid in separation. After about the 5th or 6th time, the hub should come out. 7) Clean rust on the backing plate with wire wheel (+ electric drill), apply anti-sieze for the next time and reassemble. Two bolts could be used to speed the process. The bolt and nut threads are a bit damaged - but they were only a few $$.

@@mjkirk12 Thank you! I have to do my rear right soon. If you think other bearings are going to go bad, why not grease them proactively, as long as they don’t have play? Unless the axles are popping they should be okay. You can also regrease those, and maintain the boot rubber with AT-205. A lot of us are on the 3rd Gen Avalon Toyota Nation forum in case you don’t know about it!
