I don't think I truly appreciated how important a good call was to a race until I heard this blown call by Trevor Denman. I think his guilt over that call explains why he overstated Street Sense's race in the 2007 Classic.

Yes, the one he finished way up the track from Curlin and Hard Spun? I still remember that slop...they were three of the best 3 year olds back in 2007 though.

I don't know what it is like to view the race from where the announcers call it, but I have seen some very good announcers miss horses taking leads riding up against the rails. Check out the call of the 2009 Kentucky Derby and the announcer missed Mine That Bird coming off the rail (Ridden by Calvin Borel) until the last sixteenth.

Exactly my thought. And exactly the same trip (Mine That Bird). Rode in the back to start, then rode the rail on the turn home, and just rocketed through the stretch.

How Trevor Denman kept his job after failing to notice Pine Island breaking down in the distaff and absolutely ignoring Street Sense till he was 6 lengths clear in the stretch is beyond me. I don't say race calling is easy, but Denman on this day made it look like rocket science. Or perhaps he was simultaneously reading a gripping novel.

Trevor was a very good announcer when he was in his prime, but this call and a number of others towards the end of his career were just horrible. I mean seriously, SS was clear for almost 5 seconds before he even mention him, and the move that he was making on the 2nd turn was pretty easy to see as he was literally just blowing by horses just as he did on the 2nd turn of his Kentucky Derby win.

I wonder if Denman would have focussed on the great runs of Twice a Prince and My Gallant in the '73 Belmont.
