2006 Chevy HHR Humming/Grinding Noise

2006 Chevy HHR humming/grinding noise coming from the front end. Sounds like it gets worse when you turn either direction. The sound definitely gets louder & faster with increased speed. Any help is appreciated!

I have this noise on my HHR. I was 99% sure it was a wheel bearing since the noise only changed with tire speed, engine speed and transmission gearing didn't make any difference in the sound. Your video just confirmed my suspicions for me. Sound is the same but yours sounds slightly worse. I have to admit I'm really disappointed in my HHR. The drivetrain has been bulletproof so far, but the suspension is constantly needing parts.

I've gone through the whole passenger front and it's not the brakes the cv the bearing the transaxle. It may be lower control arms getting bent at the ball joint flange. It makes your camber go negative. The manual tells you to slot the lower strut bolt hole in the steering knuckle so it can add positive camber. Then it tells you to look for bent stuff. ?? Till now all I've done is replace stuff, and adjust the alignment but it won't go away. The tires are getting edge wear.

Sounds exactly like a bad wheel bearing to me, combined with some cupping on the tires which could be the result of an alignment issue that might or might not be related to the bearing.

mine made the same noise after changing out the wheel bearings it stopped and the axle boots were torn so i replaced those as well

My car is making the same sound. I bought a hub bearing and put it on the side that i thought the sound was coming from but it must've been the other wheel cause it's still making that sound.

My car just started that exact noise and my dad said tensioner and timing chain. But every video regarding that isn't the same sound as this and mine. Perhaps it is a wheel hub assembly or bearing needed ass suggested? I did notice pressing the gas made it go away until coasting, but from your description it doesn't seem like such :/

I put a new rotor on mine fixed it , wasn't the the bearing . now there is cracking and popping changed the control arm , that didnt work so it must be the tie rod

I was so torn on if it was transmission related, cv axel related or hub bearing, I prayed and asked God to give me the answer to my problem and I found this video, and the answer was in the comments.

Hi, I have a 2009 Chev HHR, love my car, going on 10 years. Miles are 103k, just replaced tires, struts, battery. Now lately when I start my HHR a loud muffler sound comes on when warming it up, does not matter summer or winter. It goes away when I am driving it, however, when I accelerate, it comes on again like a bad muffler. Do you think maybe a bad muffler? Is it time for the timing belt and water pump to get changed? I was driving this as my primary commuter and now is my secondary car. I love my HHR so much and did not sell it or trade it, love that car. What do you think I may need to do next thank you for your time

Have you checked your flex pipe or where the cat flange connects to the resonator ,some times in cold weather the metal shrinks and causes a small leak through the seal when it warms up the metal expands sealing the leak

Not sure if you got this fixed but that happened on our Pontiac Vibe and it turned out that the gasket between the upper pipe and lower catalytic converter had basically disintegrated and needed to be replaced because exhaust was being pushed out through where the two pipes joined together. Once I took care of that the car sounded normal again.

Sounds like tires. Mine started that after I had them rotated. They said they'd warn unevenly. Just a guess but it does sound a bit like mine.

Rod Freeman I have the same noise in a 2007 HHR. I replaced the hub assembly and it’s still making the same noise. The noise is constant at speeds above 15-20 miles per hour.

​@@prestonkirby5354 Three possibilities. First, you replaced the wrong hub assembly. Second, you replaced only one assembly when both needed to be replaced. Third, you've got an alignment issue and the sound you're hearing is due to uneven tire wear.

Did u figure out why ur hhr was making that noise? Mine is doing the same thing above 15 mph.
