Thank you so much for watching!!
Welcome to this timing chain repair video! There is so much you need to know before starting this job! In this video I know there is a LOT of information that I forgot to include, but at the same time the video has a lot of important information and some great visuals so I really hope this video helps! Be advised there are mistakes in this video! The truck in this video is a 2006.
There is probably lots in this video I could have done better, let me know in the comments what you think. This video is nowhere near perfect and I know that, I just wanted to add that I put a lot of effort into making this and some positive feedback would be great too!
My personal summary from after completing the project:
Engine runs and sounds very healthy and powerful. There was noticeable shaking of the engine that wasn't present before timing chain job was done. I plugged in a code reader that is compatible with this truck and there is only 1 code present, it states that cylinder 3 is misfiring. Seeing as there was no work done to cylinder 3 except for the removal of the cylinders ignition coil the most plausible cause of cylinder 3 misfiring would be in the case wherein the ignition coil was broken upon removal. A new ignition coil will arrive in a few days, once cylinder 3 is no longer misfiring the truck will be reporting 0 codes from a scan tool and the truck will have successfully been repaired out of limp mode. Have yet to test drive, will not drive until cylinder 3 is firing. UPDATE: Installed the new ignition coil and now all cylinders are firing on this truck. No more codes when a scanner tool is hooked up so that means no more engine light which is awesome. The shaking that was present and shown at the end of this video has disappeared and there are no noticeable issues with the truck, so it appears at the time the timing chain repair job was a complete success. Still have to test drive.
I plan to post a follow up video on this project and it will show all cylinders firing vs only the three cylinders firing like you see in this video. I also have yet to test drive the truck and will update this description describing how it went when I do so.
I wonder what vehicle repair job I'm going to do next and honestly, I can't wait!
Camshaft holding tool part number is: J-44221

Was all hyped to do this repair and save a bunch of money. They I learned my Isuzu I-280 (basically the same thing) had an integral. Well, that explains the pool of oil under the engine. The vehicle is absolutely done, unfortunately.

The AC Compressor does not have to be removed. You can loosen the bolts enough to slide it out of the way, No need to totally remove it or any of the AC Lines.

Do you know what the part number is for the variable valve timing sprocket? I have a 2004 Colorado 2.8L and need to replace that faulty part you replaced and according to Dorman that’s what it’s called but I can’t find one that fits my truck

I am literally doing this job now, my next part to remove is oil pan, any insight? Did you have to remove something to get it off?
@Toastninja312
@Toastninja312 Жыл бұрын
Sorry my late reply, hopefully I commented in time, For oil pan removal you have to remove the steering gear, if it’s 4WD model you have to disconnect driveshaft from the transfer case by undoing 2 U joints (4 bolts) and then remove the differential bolts that are holding it to the frame, this will lower it and make it move able for easier access to the oil pan, the front end of the truck should be raised and on jack stands. If you STILL need more room like I did, remove 1 bolt from the drivers side shock absorber, and the front differential will drop even more, if you still need more room you can remove 1 bolt off passenger side shock absorber for the same thing. All of this will definitely give you enough room to get oil pan out, if you can’t do it this way then you will be removing an axle to get it out, but I’ll tell you right now you can do it without taking an axle off, I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss anything and I hope this comment helps

Your camera does not show all that you are doing to prevent having to remove the front differential. It would have been nice if you had scanned the area to show us what needs to be done to lower the differential in a manner that allows the removal of the oil pan without removing the complete removal.
@Toastninja312

Hi, I said on the video how but did not show all of it, to remove oil pan without dropping front differential, try removing one bolt on the driver side shock absorber, this will lower the front tire on that side enough so that the front differential lowers a bit and doesn’t get in the way, that is all I had to do, if you are still having trouble, remove one bolt on the passenger side shock absorber, this will definitely lower front differential, for me I only had to remove one bolt on drivers side, hope this helps

Why does the timing marks get out of alignment when you turn the motor over but realign after 8 turns?
@Toastninja312
@Toastninja312 11 ай бұрын
Things are designed so that the same links on the chain don't ride on the same spots on the sprockets, over and over with every revolution. If you are wondering the math part of it there is probably 6 (not 8) times more chan links than there is teeth on a camshaft sprocket, so you will have the exact same chain mark line up on the exact same sprocket tooth 1/6 turns.

@@Toastninja312 I'm redoing the timing on a 2005 2.8L colorado and the Chilton manual I have states that the dark links are supposed to line back up after 2 revolutions so when they didn't realign I thought something was wrong or I did something wrong
@Toastninja312
@Toastninja312 11 ай бұрын
Interesting, for the colorado you are working on it should be 6 revolutions, because it is the same motor as the one in this video, don’t worry if it doesn’t line up after 2 turns, however there would be a problem if it didn’t line up after 6 or more turns. I hope this helps

What are the book hours for this job?
@22_floW
@22_floW 11 ай бұрын
16-20. Just depends on the shop, but understand that book hours doesn't always translate to "time without your vehicle" hours. Most shops take about 4 days to 1 week to do something like this and you're looking at probably between $2,800 - $3,200 to do it, with the dealerships being on the high-end and smaller mom-and-pops being on the low. I wouldn't try to save money with it, either. Take it to the dealership to ensure you have as much standards and liability coverage as possible unless you know someone you trust enough to handle it because this isn't a small job. There's tons of shops out there who claim they can do this work only to get the vehicle back after the work is done and hear new (bad) noises, which always results in constant return trips that often result in additional problems like leaks, etc. This kind of job is one step short of an entire engine swap in terms of difficulty. In fact, some might argue that it's harder than an engine swap because with engine swaps, there's fewer points-of-failure for things like ensuring proper torque spec, timing with top-dead-center (TDC) marks, and using proper parts for things like guides or tensioners as some aftermarket suppliers produce inadequate alternatives for each leading one to eventually be forced to go back in to replace the aftermarket equivalents with original manufacturer components if they still even exist.
