How was it determined the thermostat was bad?

@amill1563 if the engine is overheating even with coolant is full. open the engine oil filler cap and check if milky or whitish. if not and still overheating, most likely the thermostat is bad and is not opening it when it reach a certain temperature.

What happens if you install the gasket wrong?

if you install the gasket the wrong way or upside down, the thermostat housing wont able to close or it will leak.
