2007 Mercedes Whine Noise, Help! *FIXED in Description*

Update: Took it to a few shops and it ended up being the alternator, the wanted to charge me 680 for a new one installed, I called a mercedes dealership and the wanted to charge me 900 just for the piece lol.
I bought a new one at O'reillys for about 230 and found a cheap shop to install it for 150.
Look around for cheaper ways and save money.

Mercedes-Benz certified systems Technician here 👨‍🔧 just want to verify it’s the alternator bearing making the loud whine I hate that sound!!! A/c compressor bearing also makes the same exact whine . Its not the secondary air injection pump so don’t mess with that. It’s not the power steering pump low on fluid. to verify wich one is making the noise get a mechanics stethoscope put the tip of the stethoscope anywhere on the alternators or on the compressor and you will here the whine perfectly. If you think it’s something else take the engine belt off and turn on the car the if the sound es eliminated you know it’s a bearing noise. Also check all your pulleys.

I have a 2008 E350 I took my car to the mechanic because of a rubbing sound and he said I needed rear bearings. As soon as I left and drove down the street this is the noise I heard. I never heard it before. I turned around and went back to the mechanic. He said it is my transmission and I may need a transmission pump or rebuilt transmission. It sounds exactly like this. Is it possible 79,000 miles and its my transmission?

Vikki Harris it looks like the noise comes from the alternator or compressor as indicated by the certified technician above. I have the same noise on my 08 E350. I replaced all the 3 pulleys but noise persisted. My mechanic (not MB savvy) used a stethoscope and told me it was the alternator but I didn’t agree with him since the car charges battery without any issues.., my mistaken stubbornness. Thank you all for sharing your experiences. I now am convinced it’s the alternator and will be taking care of it. The noise is sure annoying more now.

Cruz 2011 sl500 making same noise could it be the pulleys first to check. It happens on mine after it warms up. Or is that straight to the alternator. Im a mechanic and Mercedes told my client it was the transmission and i was like what. Shifts just fine and no check engine code it showing. Just curious thats all. Alittle help would be appreciated

my 06 c280 had the same problem/noise. you have to remove the serpentine belt. there is a 16mm nut on the tensioner, just left of the power steering pump. get a ratchet and socket and turn it left to slip the belt off. then spin each and every pulley and listen and feel for any resistance or drag or even the slightest unusual sound. they should all spin very smoothly and quietly.. you may have to do this several times to determine which pulley is bad. then you replace the bad unit. in my case, it was the AC pulley, but the AC worked. I decided to get a shorter belt and bypass the AC and the whine went away. in my engine the correct belt was duralast 910k6.

Figured I'd update mine as well... I posted two of my own videos but my problem was the AC compressor. It made the SAME exact noise as the OP's video. I did replace the alternator because that pulley squeaked but that didn't solve the problem. Replacing the AC compressor fixed it and now it doesn't whine at all! Thanks, -Nigel

JustABigFan2010 I believe amazon had it for $200... pretty cheap. OEM, brand new! But after I replaced the compressor it no longer makes that whining noise!! IT was either the bearings inside or the pulley... regardless it's fixed and didn't cost me thousands like it would have taking it to the dealer.. Wasn't a hard job, just a couple hours worth of work. -Nigel

I see you got it fixed and im glad you posted this because mine is doing it now. 120k on it. Identical car. Color year and trim. For others, maybe this will help. Use a long screwdriver or extension or something solid to put on parts like alternator, compressor, water pump, is accessible without getting into the belt or fan. Put your ear on one end and it will help locate the noise often times you can even locate front or rear bearing failure. Or a mechanic stethoscope works just the same.

Thanks for posting this. I purchased a 2008 C300 that made a very similar noise. You video confirmed that it was the alternator bearings. I purchased a rebuilt alternator from AutoZone and installed it myself. It wasn't too hard. Biggest challenge was getting the old alternator out of the engine compartment! Thanks again.

Same car, same issue, Mercedes wanted to charge me 1400 for just the part. I bought a nice brand new alternator for 300 and got it replaced for 100, I can only hear my beautiful AMG exhaust now.

@@jacksonkaos8368 take it to an auto parts store and they can check if the alternator is not charging. If you just replaced with a rebuilt alternator I’m thinking probably not enough tension on the belt so check the tensioner roller. For the noise it could be a roller bearing on one of the auxiliary items (ac compressor?) driven by the belt.

I just took a stethoscope to the back of the alternator and I have a whining noise... I thought it was going to be the alternate pulleys but it seems like it is in fact the alternator even though it's charging fine it has a definite whine as you accelerate or decelerate..

My 2012 glk 350 was making the exact same noise. It was also the alternator, $257 from autozone (plus a $63 core). Replaced it myself, I’m a professional mechanic but this job could pretty easily be done by the average DIYer.

Yes!!!! Your video gave me the hint. before seeing it thought it was the transmission or the steering pump. I checked with a stethoscope and indeed came form the alternator. Mechanic dismounted it, changed just the bearings (US$35) and mounted it back. Everything costed US$55. THANKS!!!

I've the same noise on my M111.955 supercharged engine. I was always thinking that it's my supercharger, but since alternator is just below the supercharger, I might be wrong. I had a 2000 c230 Kompressor, I drove it a complete year hearing a similar sound, never bothered me as I thought it is the Kompressor whine, so I only knew that the alternator was going bad after I sold the car and the guy who bought it told me that he changed the alternator...i feel sorry for him as I thought it was nothing but the Kompressor. I still believe its the Kompressor though. lol.

Having the same issue ..only whine is a bit lower in volume. Frustrating I have a 2008 cl550. Just serviced the trans at 82000 mi. noise still there. I d hate to have to go to the dealer. wish I could help. Im in the same boat. Only noise is constant when up and down gear changes. Performance not an issue.

Oh yeah, baby! Just checked W204 C230 2009 today with 110.000km mileage on clock: - alternator have same noise - P2015 fault code (intake manifold sensor) - low engine oil pressure fault - engine in limp mode (not over 3000rpm) - idler pulley noise Benz my arse! Last Benz was made before 2000.

Hey... I had same issue with my Benz c230 2006 model I finally fixed it yesterday. In my case the alternator light dint come on since it was charging my battery perfectly but the alternator bearing was bad so as soon as I changed the bearing everything was back to normal.

In this case it was the alternator roller... but it could be any one of those rollers that can go bad at any time. I have an 07 C230 and the first roller to fail or make that whining sound was the tensioner pulley. Replaced for about $350 or so (Do not recall the exact cost). Now , 2 years later I think the whiny sound is back in full force. Went to the same mechanic shop that specializes in German cars (Now owned by less than competent new owners). Guy did a half as job in trying to pin point the exact roller and just took a wild ass guess ( $200.00). Did not fix the problem. He wanted to take another guess for $1,300 claiming its most likely the water pump. I told him his guesses are way too expensive and I'll take my chances fixing it myself. I am thinking it may also be the roller on the alternator so I may change that out myself.

It was the alternator ... was driving home from work and my battery light came on (battery not even two years old). Went to Autozone and got a new battery. Two days later while driving home battery light came on again. Shit! it's got to be a bad alternator. Went and bought an alternator at Autozone and replaced it myself. Started at 10:30 in the morning and was done by 3:00 PM. Had to ramp car up on passenger side (might as well ramp car up on both sides). I had to remove fan (jut the fan not the entire fan assembly - three screws) and unbolt bracket assembly that hold radiator/fan in place. This helped me pull open a space large enough to slide alternator out. Took one person pulling open the space and another guiding the alternator out. FYI, could cut a small piece of the plastic lip that surrounds the fan with a hacksaw blade to help guide alternator out. I had to do exactly that to slide new alternator in. Once everything was back in and installed - fired everything up and car was nice and quite. No more loud whiny sound that let the neighbors know I was coming down the street. That was two weeks ago and car has been running fine. Cost: $250 (alternator) + $20 (special sockets (i think they called them 5 star - can't remember). Mechanic wanted about 1300 to replace water pump which was not the problem and I am thinking he'd probably ask 1500 for alternator.

Bob Jones thanks! I have a 2007 C230 myself. I still have the original MB battery with 117k miles on it. That’s a big DIY job to replace the alternator since it’s so tight! I have a friend mechanic and he doesn’t rip me off. My battery still going strong so I’m going to replace the two idler pulleys and the tensioner pulley first to see if that’s the problem since they’re cheaper to replace. I just hope it’s not the a/c pulley. Plus it’s time to replace the original belt anyway. The a/c compressor is $700 plus other related components and it’s even in a tighter spot than the alternator. They don’t sell a separate a/c pulley that you can replace. I’m having second thoughts on how reliable Mercedes are. And I drive it pretty easy too. I had a Nissan 300zx that had no wear issues on engine components up to 150k mile just had to replace muffler and shocks/springs and key ignition. On the C230 I’ve replaced the fuel pump twice, thermostat, cam magnets, crank sensor, shocks/ struts/, front lower control arms. If another big repair comes up, I’m getting rid of it or using it as a backup car. I still really enjoy the ride. My favorite car to drive so far. I’ve had an e36 m3 before too.

I need to do the manifold job on my car as well. That looks like a pretty complicated job (P0022 Fault Code?). I know exactly what you're talking about the quality. When MB merged with Chrysler I think the quality went down hill with all the cutting corners. I just want to run my car another two years and done.

Thats definitely the power steering or alternator. U can check the voltage on your car to see if its accurate while running. The power steering pump..just turn steering wheel left to right. Check fluid level. I had a similar noise from both parts on my R class. I replaced both at some point do to part failure. No more noise.

Idler pulley, or power steering pump. Take your belt off and spin everything with a pulley on it. The bad pulley will be rough or loose even. Good luck

I had a same problem with my W211 E350 2005 model; in my case I have to replace an Alternator which I bought it brand new from eBay comes from Germany (BOSCH) for $420 AUD. DIY. The best thing to start by taking an Alternator out and there will be a model and Voltage out then you type those number on eBay search they should have them with a bargain price.

mine was the rear bearing in the alternator. I have a silver 07 mercedes c230 sport. I took the alternator out and apart and the rear bearing seemed sticky. And it made the identical sound yours is, the faster the louder. I took the alternator all apart pulled the rear bearing off. youll never find one on line so dont try. I never knew there was an alternator repair shop down the street from me. it was way in the back of these buildings no sign. I brought him the bearing and he charged me 15 bucks and he pressed it on. I put it all together and now it's fixed. so I fixed it for 15 bucks. Mercedes could of charged some poor lady 15 hundred. If anyone runs into that check your idler first but alternator bearings sound exactly like this.

i suggest you buy a stethoscope and locate the noise. its never a good idea to diagnose problem base on problem somebody else have. what i heard is more like bad alternator noise but experienced tech shouldnt take more than 5 minutes to locate the noise

Yeah it stopped mine, but there was another place that had a small whine. Its somewhere where the pulleys are, I think mine is either the ac clutch pulley or driveshaft pulley. But replacing the alternator did make a big change in the whine. It no longer annoys me.

It could be the Smog Air Pump. I changed the alternator and the idler puller only to find out that it was the Air pump the entire time. Mercedes told me it was the power steering pump and it would be $1500 to fix it. If you have a stethoscope you can narrow it down.
