If you have a 2007 Toyota Sequoia in an: (a) All keys lost, or (b) Valet key only scenario....then you have a problem. I bought mine with one Valet key and one working FOB.
A Toyota dealership quoted me over $900 to solve the key problem (only); they didn't even look at the key FOBs. Out of principle--No. I took the problem to a number of first-rate automotive locksmiths, and it stumped them too. The core of the problem is Toyota, their immobilizer box, and their low-current chipset used in said immobilizer box.
This video details how I solved this problem. In short, I ended up buying Toyota part # 89780-34010 Control Module, which is the low-current immobilizer box behind the instrument cluster. I bought it new, because this was the cheaper option than trying to salvage the existing immobilizer box. (Since this is a low-current chipset, the data can get scrambled easily.). I then installed it, programmed the keys myself, and then jumped two OBD2 pins to pair the new immobilizer box with the car's computer.
But that's only have the problem! I still had only 1 FOB. After a lot of reading, I learned that some 2007 Sequoias have Toyota key fobs, and some 2007 Sequoias have "Port Installed" or "Dealer Installed" key fobs. They are NOT the same, and they are NOT interchangeable. So after realizing that I needed to find FOBS designated with "ELVATDD" on the back of the FOB itself. You can buy "original" used replacements for over $70 dollars online, or by eBay clones for $11. The eBay clones work fine--search for "Toyota Sequoia Rav4 4Runner Upgraded Keyless Remote Key Fob ELVATDD/ T1B".
It's been a journey. At times, I was distraught--if not in despair. Special thanks to Sam the Locksmith ... He took time out to help me understand the problem, and to set me on the right path. He is now my goto automotive locksmith, even though he's 6 hours away... You can find him at / samthelocksmith

Hey Greg. I’m sorry you had to go through this and I wish city auto have recommended you to us in Memphis! We’re in Techno Lock Keys in Memphis are able to verginize your current immo box without the need to replace it as we have multiple techs who are experts in EEPROM jobs. We would also cut your keys by code and do the whole programming procedure for you. Also, valet (slave) keys can be cloned within 5 mins! Its sucks that you were drifted into all this due to wrong info. Glad you figured it out though ^_^

Same situation I'm in now with a 2005 Tacoma. I was, however, able to make a duplicate valet key. That doesn't solve the need for a master key, but for now it's a partial solution because without a master key I can't program the key fobs. I appreciate expanding my understanding with your video. Thanks.

Great video but some of the info is incorrect. For those of you, who have this situation, maybe this will be helpful. 1. The Valet key CAN be cloned. 2. The cloned key CAN be cut to the master cuts, which will work on all the locks. I do have a question though. How many locksmiths did you send the immobilizer box to?
@drgjs
@drgjs Жыл бұрын
(1) I know a valet can be cloned. But no one could do it in my area. (2) I don't know how one could cut a master from a valet. (3) I sent my box to one company, but the car was used...so it's an unknown. Either way, I fixed it for cheaper than any quoted price. #winning.

@@drgjs I did not say that a valet key can be cut to a master. I said the cloned key can be cut to master cuts. The cut, at the tip of the key would be cut to a 2 depth. This will allow it to operate the trunk and glove box. I’m glad you got it done but you did it in the most difficult way possible.

This is great. I have owned 3 of these...great vehicles. I currently have a 2002 Sequoia SR5 that will not go into programming mode when I do the lock/unlock cycle or turning the ignition on/off 7 times. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I have all of the original keys and even the original remotes but they are just worn out. I purchased new remotes on Amazon and they worked perfectly on my 07 but not working on my 02. Any help would GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

I could have cloned the valet key, cut new keys to the master key cuts so it worked the glove box and used the valet chips, the only function that you would have been missing would be adding additional keys, but it could be cloned indefinitely so it's not an issue ! If you only wanted it because the word master sounds important or you absolutely had to have oem logo keys, the situation was entirely your own creation I would have had code cut a couple keys and cloned transponders, you would have been out the door in 20 minutes and under $200 total

Wish we lived closer! I had to teach myself along the way... I went to 3 different regional locksmiths, and none could do this. I was connected with another (one state away) and he ghosted us. Looking back, I was merging two independent problems (the Fob and the Key)...because I read in an online forum that a valet couldn't be used to make more FOBs. Now that I know (in hindsight), your plan would have worked just fine. A great car locksmith is hard to find!

Greg, thank you for posting this! Question for you. Is that frequency issue the same on the earlier models of the Sequoia? Having issues programming my fob to my 2003. Thank you sir.
@drgjs
@drgjs 2 жыл бұрын
The frequency of the FOB would depend if it's factory from Toyota or if it was installed at the port or the dealership. (And there was one large dealership from Texas that did this.) Once I knew what I was looking for, I found stickers from that dealership on the driver's side door jam (from Texas). You could also look (deep) under the driver's left foot to see the aftermarket module. I bet you could also use the VIN on Carfax to see if the truck came from Texas.

I have a 2006 sequoia limited and my car/key symbol started blinking. I have two keys, black and grey. It started blinking once I inserted the grey key. The ignition got locked. So I inserted the black one and it unlocked the ignition. Then the key/car symbol started blinking. Haven’t had any issues “yet” but I’m think I will later on. Does yours still blink even after fixing it??

@drgjs

That's basically correct. One has to remove the (immobilizer) unit to either virginize it or modify it to match the key that was cut. I ended up just replacing it with a virgin immobilizer and starting from scratch.

Hi! I also have a 2005 sequoia and I lost all my keys. I purchased a brand new immobilizer and failed to get my new chipped and cut keys to the vehicle. If I tried starting it like I did does it ruin the immobilizer? And even once I get my keys programmed I still have to jump the obd ports? Toyota claimed it was a automatic progamimg immobilzer and key which i totally dont beleive anymore. I couldve purchased it for 100$ cheaper. Ridiculous. I'm becoming very distraught and cannot for the life of me get this vehicle to start. My diff went out in October so we were awaiting a diff for months. Then lost the keys in the mean time. Horrible 1000$ situation that has stacked up and unable to drive and fix still. Thanks any info is helpfull
@drgjs
@drgjs Жыл бұрын
Wow! You can do this! Yes, I think Toyota is lying to you. It won't auto-program. That's silly. Yes, you have to jump the OBD2 port to program it. The new/virgin immobilizer has to pair with the ECU and get assigned two masters and one slave key. Search me out on the internet if I can be of service. I think the 04/05 year isn't the same as the 07. Some of the commenters are auto locksmiths, so you can ask them. Also, Sam the Locksmith helped me figure it out.

you first need to figure out the proper frequency of the FOB. once you know the frequency, then you can find the proper instructions for programming. if you have a working fob, look on the back to see if you can find the frequency code. if you don't, look at the drivers doorjamb to see if it came from the Texas dealer that went aftermarket.

Man oh man … I have a 04 Sequoia all keys lost that has been a paper weight in my Driveway for the last 6+ months 😢 I live in the mountains of NM and have had the only Locksmith in the region (nice guy) invest probably 8plus hrs on multiple long trips with no result. I removed ECU and sent it along with key code from passenger door panel .. he’s just run all forums and come back empty. Toyota dealers are in Roswell and Alamogordo both around hr to hr and twenty from me and saying I’d have to tow to them and replace ECU altogether along with amplifier ?? And keys .. plus labor = crazy money. I’m wondering whether I can do myself considering I found wholesale legit Toyota parts online for way cheaper .. honestly I don’t care about messing with remotes .. Do you think I can do myself ? What in the world is the amplifier ?? Do you know? Official wholesale listing is super vague with no pics and diff names - Control Module, Amplifier Transponder, And Transmitter Man I appreciate your vid and any words or thoughts you may have .. I need to get her going seeing as we are a family of 7 and running diff schedules through week .. love this Toyota when she’s rolling

You can absolutely do this! You need to get the key code (from the passenger door lock, or from the VIN). A dealer can cut you a key. Then, buy the replacement box (just like me) and replace it with a virgin one. Then you'll need to pair it with the ECU. Amplifier ... Like audio amplifier? Seems crazy to me. But where there's a will, there's a way. Have you contacted Sam the Locksmith? If I can do it, so can you!

@@drgjs Thanks Greg! Quick question though … when you refer to pairing box with ECU do you mean via the key pairing protocol at the ignition? Or am I missing something? I get confused about what the ecu is .. I thought it was the box you show in the video? Iv already pulled that box (black with white and blue sticker from behind instrument panel like yours). Iv got key code from pass door. So I order new box (as you have) and two master, one non master keys from Toyota wholesale … but keys need to then be taken to Toyota to be cut to code? (I originally thought code was for flashing new keys but I guess it would make sense that new keys would be needed the cut to the code ? The amplifier I mentioned is what Toyota quoted for what they would also be replacing along with “control module and keys” …. It is what amplifies and sends signal from chip in key at ignition to the ecu I believe …. Im just wondering if I do this myself if I can bypass having to change the amplifier.. ? seems like maybe an add on that is not needed ? Thanks a million for your thoughts Greg .. you rock !

@@briantharpe1937 I honestly wonder if our trucks have the same exact system in them. Mine is an 07, and I seem to recall that our systems differ relative to immobilization. The immobilizer box is different from the main ECU (main computer for the car). The immobilizer's job is to recognize only a select number of keys. If they keys turning over the engine are not recognized, then the immobilizer box tells the ECU to not add spark to the combustion chamber. If the keys are recognized, then the immobilizer box tells the ECU, "It's ok bro, let it start this time." Once you swap out the immobilizer box and swap it out w/ a new (virgin) one, then you need to "pair" the Immobilizer box w/ the main ECU. This is like a 30 minute ordeal when you jump some pins on the OBD2 plug, and your whole dash lights up like a christmas tree and it freaks you out for a while. Once the immobilizer box and the ECU recognize each other, then you can effectively program the immobilizer box to recognize the two master keys and a slave key. I have no idea where an "amplifier" plays into this at all. Maybe in earlier models, Toyota (in their infinite wisdom) made a single ECU / audio amplifier box all in one. But that sounds dumb. What happened w/ mine is that I got a used truck with 1 working valet. When they tried to read the immobilizer box, it was a jumbled mess. This was likely due to folks trying to read it at the wrong voltage, but who knows. So a super-nerd can literally re-program the immobilizer box in Hex, at a cost of like 600 bucks. Or I bought a new one for like 300, and I manually paired it with the ECU. And then I programmed new keys (cut for me by the toyota place) to be my master. I re-used my only valet key as the valet. So that's how I did it. Calling a real pro, like the locksmith I mentioned, might help. I never found a true pro (in person), but they are out there. Hope this helps, g

1) get your remote that came with the car. 2) turn that remote over and look at it on the back side. 3) in tiny print, you will probably see a code of letters and numbers. that letter/number code is your frequency code. if your working remote says "ELVATDD", then you bought the proper one. if it doesn't, then it's probably a stock Toyota remote and your "ELVATDD" remote will not work. you can test this by following the ELVATDD instructions I've already provided you. if it works, great! if it doesn't work, then you bought the wrong remote. this is the most support I can offer you; you'll have to take it from here. good luck.

@@drgjs That's some great info on the Sequoia. Here's some thing for the readers.. Not sure if this is true with the later year systems. (like 07 Sequoia with separate IMMO box), but on the earlier (98- 04)Toyota with the chip in the ECU (4c chip sys), You can.. do away with the IMMO System completely. Once the EEPROM chip has been Virginized, (or the ECM replaced), You can just cut NON-Transponder keys and the vehicle will run without a Chipped key present. Previously Programmed keys can always simply be re-programmed back into the EEPROM. 2 masters and 1 valet. Once the ECM reads and stores the chip data from a transponder key, it stores it in the EEPROM. The IMMO System and Keys are Married and from that point on, it will always need to read and match that key value to allow the vehicle to run.

I repeated the frequency code a bunch of times in the video. I think it's elvatdd Check the vid. It's on the programming instructions and I say it twice. Then type it into ebay.

The simplest route for this is to call a Toyota dealer (as an automotive locksmith I do this almost every day). Explain that you have a Toyota (model) and tell them the vehicles VIN. They can tell you IF your vehicle has a remote system AND exactly which part number the remote/fob is for your vehicle. You can then purchase one wherever you choose.

Oh man. I have no idea. A true high-tech locksmith or the dealership may be a good place to start. The immobilizer box needs to be paired with the main ecu. Maybe by swapping out the cylinder, it messed up that pairing? So maybe a repair would work? I honestly don't know. There's a great locksmith that replied. I also referenced sam. I'd maybe contact them, give them 50 bucks for their wisdom and see what they say?

Vanessa - A locksmith can change the ignition to work with your original keys. This is much easier, and less expensive, than dealing with the Sequoia programming issues Greg had.

@@craigstewart6118 I guess that makes sense. Make a new key, and simply transfer the chip from the old Master key to the new key. Then, all things should run -- no problems. Good thinking, Craig!

You should be able to use your old master key to program in new keys on most model Toyotas, because you don't have to turn the ignition at all while programming keys when doing the manual programming method. (Only if you use a scan tool to do a Master reset etc). You just insert the old Master Key in the ignition 5 times without turning it at all, then open and close the door 6 times. Insert the new key and watch the security light .. Just , replace the lock cylinder only, keeping your old RFID ring in place... Insert the old Master key without turning it, do the sequence and the new key should program. Some Toyota cars after 2004 with All Keys Lost, you can do an IMMO reset by jumping 2 pins on the OBD2 connector and a 16 min wait.. There are many VIDS on this out there.

Truth, but I saved myself money, and I didn't give it to a dealer. It was worth it for me.
