Just fit new clutch 1.8 petrol astra twintop, using your videos as guidance. New slave repaced copper tubes with a plastic system. I let air in and couldn't bleed it. bugger. Had to back feed fluid. Makes me officially a youtube mechanic/cable tie technician lol

Great work, Kevin I replaced a clutch on my 2004 Astra G 1.7 CDTI (F17box)last year with a full LUK clutch kit and slave cylinder.About 10 months later it blew the Flexi pipe off at the top of the box with white stuff comming out along with the brake fluid. I put a stronger clip on at the Flexi and the clutch feels fine and still light,but if you try to press the clutch fast (pumping it)it returns very slow,but driving it is fine,I’ve also replaced the clutch master and it’s still the same. Any ideas? Cheers.

RS 500 I religiously avoid LUK slave cylinder for Vauxhall. They are badly manufactured... and are made of plastic. at one point I was doing warranty work almost every week due to LUK slave cylinder.... I only use FTE slave for vauxhall... the slow release pedal is the seal inside the slave..

Kevin-Albert Williams I was thinking that myself,because the only other thing I thought it could of been was the actual steel pipe with a disc on it at the bulk head going to the top of the box,was wondering was the disc some sort of return valve...but I’ve never had to replace that in all the years I’ve done clutch jobs.Did your warranty jobs (slave cylinders)do the same thing? Pedal returning slowly? Cheers

If that’s the case there’s air in the system or the slave is not fully seated. Hope it all goes well.

@@WMCS indeed it was air in the system solved it but just as one is solved another popped up, now the 1st gear and reverse gear seems to not wanting slot in smoothly seems like F17 gearbox has a mind of its own.

Leave the bleed nipple open. Slowly pump the pedal in small increments from the floor. Whilst leaving the bleed nipple open. On last stroke when pedal has reached the top. Press it down and leave it to the floor. Shut the bleed nipple and and pump the pedal continuously ans it will build up pressure Hope it works out ok.

That’s about right. Just tight enough for it not to come loose. Should be good.

Thomas Holford during my 6 years I’ve never pre tension a clutch before ... the only thing you need is a £5 clutch alignment tool.. hope that helps.

Peter Griffiths I use a self bleeding tool. It can be purchased online. Halfords. Euro car parts. Or you can can go the conventional way of pumping the pedal.

ludataunatusz These don’t need draining as they have a sump. If you want to replace oil you have to undo the gearbox sump.

ludataunatusz On these the oil sits very low in the sump. It’s a different design. No oil should come out even if you turn it on its side.

Kevin Burns same old problems with them gearboxes .. sorry to hear that. ... you can get the box past the subframe .. you don’t need to remove it all the way. First lock the steering wheel straight and remove the key. Undo the lower part of the steering column .. take care to not turn the steering at all until the steering Column is attached again. If the steering wheel spins it’ll be hard to find the exact location and that’ll bring up all sorts of light in the dash, as the car won’t be able to know the position of the steering wheel to the road wheel and it’s an expensive part to replace that steering angle sensor. Remove all the bolts completely on the gearbox side. Undo the drop link. Slacken all the other side about 3/4 out.. you should have enough clearance to slide it out. You have to be a bit patient with it as there may be little snag in the way ...

@@WMCS brilliant advice mate, very much appreciated 👍as for the box I got VERY lucky on Ebay....I picked up one for 95 quid, had it checked out by a local gearbox mechanic, turns out it's a later big bearing one with the uprated end case, and on top of that he reckons it's a close ratio one as well. Result! Hopefully going to tackle it in the couple of weeks. Thanks for taking the time to reply and give me advice, experience is priceless 👍👍

Pete Dalton is the clutch aligned up correctly. Did you use an alignment tool. Is the box just not going on.... Is the clutch the correct one... be sure to check the clutch fits on the gearbox splined shaft before installation. Let me know. Where about are you pal

If the clutch is lined up correctly I found it helps if you get a couple of bellhousing bolts from a breakers, cut the head off and screw them in to the block, not too tight, then you can hang the box on them and slide it up to the block and it will be perfectly aligned. Makes life a lot easier than struggling with the box on a trolley jack.

johndavies11333 not really. If it’s a petrol you don’t need to disturb it at all. If it’s a diesel drop it down one side about 5 inches.
